Sorry. I will continue the story about six p.m today.
Re: Thrills Of A Lagos Babe by WuraSerano(f): 6:12pm On May 02, 2019
I sat down to calm myself down. I obviously had to go and see him and see how he was faring. I picked my bag. The money inside would be enough to take me to Ikoyi and bring me back. Besides, I also had my ATM inside the bag, in case I needed to withdraw some money.

I locked my office and went to meet Akin.

'I'm going to Ikoyi to see somebody now. It's a kind of emergency.'

I took a cab to the hospital at Ikoyi. There, I met Manu, his driver at the reception hall of the big hospital. He stood up on seeing me and took
some uncertain steps towards me.

'How's he?' I asked.

He stared blankly at me in that very morose way. Just then, Tina emerged from the passageway. She came straight to me, held my left hand and
led me to one of the seats.

'It's better we sit down,' she said. I sat and looked at her anxiously.

'You've got to take heart,' she said. 'In a matter like this, one has to take things easy and move on with life.'

'What are you saying? How's Mola?'

'He's dead.'

'What!?' My mind was instantly thrown into grief and consternation. Mola, dead? Oh, what a cruel fate.

Tina held me while I cried quietly. I could hardly believe that Mola would die, just like that. It reminded of my father's death, except that the
other one was much more serious.

Tina comforted me as much as possible. I really appreciated her empathy.

Later, Dekola, the immediate younger brother of Mola came around and took charge of things. Mola had introduced me to him as his next wife. It was apparent that death had aborted that wish.

Mola's body had been taken to the morgue and the family would soon meet on funeral plans. After hanging around a bit, I left the place and took a cab back to Berger. The grief must have shown on my face as Akin asked what was wrong, the moment he saw me.

'I just lost somebody,' I told him.

'Oh, sorry about that.'

I must say I was distraught. How could he die just like that? Now, what happened to his business? Kola and Maryam were orphans all of a
sudden, and I felt so sorry for them. Then I imagined if I had married Mola. That meant I would become a widow so soon. My heart cringed at this thought. My mother became a widow at fifty-two. How could I become one at less than thirty? That would be just too soon.

The tragedy of Mola meant I was back to being a lady without a future man. Then, I remembered Tayo and his dream. I shook my head. Mola's
death must be a coincidence. To me, the possibility of marrying Tayo was very remote. My number one reason was because I knew he was a playboy. That day he did his birthday in the banquet hall, two ladies were clinging on to him as if their lives depended on it. Two ladies!

Mrs. Shitta was also concerned about my countenance, so I told her.

'Is he the one that bought that car for you?'

'Yes, ma.'

'Oh, what a loss!' She came to hug me. 'Don't worry, take heart. I'm sure the good Lord will give you a perfect man. It must be His will that this
one is not the one.'

I nodded. 'Thank you, ma.'

I suddenly realized that I did not really have good luck when it came to men. If at all anyone blamed me not retaining the love of Daniel, would I
be blamed for the untimely death that happened to Mola? Indeed, I realized that I needed prayers.

Tina called me the following day to intimate me about latest information from the office. Damola's immediate brother would be taking over the
running of Mola's business. They were assured to continue with their work and remain steadfast.

A week after Mola's incident, Tayo came to my office.

'You did not see me and did not care,' he started.

That was true. The events of the past days had made me to forget about him.

'I'm sorry,' I replied. 'I lost someone and have not been in the right frame of mind.'

'Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. I've not been in the right frame of mind too. I had been sick in the last few days.'

'Sorry to hear that too. It's like it was a week of unpleasant things. So, how is your body now?'

'Well, I'm getting better.'

He was with me in my office for some time. I offered him drinks but he, as usual, declined. Somehow, I did not disclose to him that the man I
had hoped to marry was dead.

I offered him drinks but he, as usual, he declined. Somehow, I did not disclose to him that the man I
had hoped to marry was dead. He affirmed his belief that I would be his wife, but I tactfully refused to comment on that.

I now had all evenings to myself as Manu did not have the need for him to take me to Mola again. Tina still came occasionally. However, the
incident of Mola changed some of my thinking.

'Two senators from Abuja are cooling off in Lagos, this weekend,' she announced. 'They need company.'

I shook my head. How long would Tina keep indulging in 'runs'?

'I'm not interested,' I butted in.

'Hey, don't let Malo's matter ruined your happiness. He is gone and he's gone forever. You have your own life to lead. You must not allow him to
weigh you down. Move on with your life.'

'I'm moving on with life,' I argued.

'Good. So, let's meet with these distinguished gentlemen. It's Nigerian money they want to spend. Let's eat our national cake through them.'
Whether it was national cake or international cake, I had made up my mind that I would be content with what I earned legitimately, henceforth. I
knew the kind of background I had and the kind of person I had grown to be. Despite my beauty and the continuous attention I got from men, I had never allowed myself to get carried away.

‘Tina, I’m not going,’ I said. ‘As a matter of fact, I will advise that you stick to a man and stop these ‘runs’ of a thing.’

She looked bemused. ‘Now, wait a minute. Don’t tell me you have become a ‘born again’ overnight. I don’t understand this your preaching at all.’

‘I’m not preaching,’ I returned. ‘But I honestly believe we should not live a reckless life. With the income we earn legitimately, we should be okay. There’s no need for all these exploits.’

‘Hey, it’s not just for the money. It’s for the fun of it.’

I shook my head. ‘I want no such fun again.’

‘Alright, Miss Righteous. Do as you wish.’

She let me be and it was such a relief. Tayo did not give up on his desire. I must admit that he had a lot of doggedness.

‘I don’t want to be one of your numerous ladies,’ I told him. ‘Since you have many of them at your beck and call, I think it will do you well to leave me out of it.’

‘Those ones you saw fawning over me during my birthday celebration were just seeking attention. I don’t have for them the kind of feeling I have
for you. It’s you I love, Simi.’

I chuckled. ‘People always talk about love, yet they hardly understand what it truly means.’

‘So, give me that chance to show you. I will show you what love is.’ Then, he looked at me curiously. ‘I don’t even know where you live. Can I
pay you a visit at your home?’

I sighed. ‘I think it’s better you don’t. I live in the same house with my employer for now, and she may not like the idea.’

He did not give up. ‘What about me taking you to know my place? Let me take you home.’

I considered this briefly and decided to concede.

‘Alright. Maybe this Saturday.’

He grinned happily. ‘That’s good, my dear Simi.’

That Saturday, I would be doing morning shift which would end by two p.m. Then, I would have the rest of the day for myself.

‘I’ll come and pick you,’ he said. ‘What time should I come?’

‘Come by four in the afternoon.’

He nodded. ‘I’ll be there.’

WuraSerano:
I nodded. Just then, there was another blaring of horn at the gate. ‘Goodness,’ mum said. ‘That must be Mrs. Shitta. She said she would be visiting.’

She stood up from the bed and moved to the door. I followed her.

‘Maria has a lot of confidence in you for inviting you for this job, Simi. You must not disappoint her.’

I sighed. Mummy was always zealous about things she was interested in. I had not even affirmed that I would accept the job offer, but she was already taking about not disappointing her friend.

She went downstairs while I went back to my room. I played some music on my small sound system and reclined on my bed.

Many minutes later, there was a knock on my door. The person that knocked didn’t wait for an answer when the knob was turned and the door was pushed in.

Titi gave a grin. ‘Mummy said you should come downstairs,’ she informed.

I knew that would be her message. ‘Okay, I’ll be coming.’

I got down from the bed and went to the staircase. Here, I could hear the excited voices of mum and her guest. I descended the case slowly. The voices grew louder as I got to the large living-room.

‘Good evening, ma,’ I greeted Mrs. Shitta.

‘Ah, Simi, my daughter, come and give me a hug.’

I gave her a hug, the strong whiff of her perfume assailing my nose.

She looked at me all over. ‘Only God knows what is wrong with the young men in Ibadan. How could they leave a beautiful damsel like you alone all this while?’ she smiled.

I wasn’t surprised at her sarcasm. This woman could talk!

‘Don’t worry,’ she went on. ‘Lagos men are smarter. Before you spend months there, you’ll see how they will rush you. They know good things.’

Mummy smiled while I grinned. But, who told Madam Maria that I didn’t have a man in my life? I had, even though he was an unserious fellow.

‘O ya, sit down and let’s discuss,’ Mrs. Shitta went on. ‘Bimbola must have told you about the Lagos job I’m offering you, right?’

I nodded and took a seat beside her. ‘Yes, ma.’

‘So, what d’you think?’

‘She’s going to do well on the job,’ mummy intervened. ‘I trust my daughter.’

I nodded in support of what my mother said.

‘Yes,’ Mrs. Shitta continued. ‘I want you to be smart and sharp. I want you to be my eyes and ears there. I want you to grow the place. And of course, the remuneration is mouth-watering. I know you’ll not disappoint.’

I resigned myself to fate. ‘No, I’ll not disappoint,’ I answered.

I stayed with the two women for several more minutes before I excused myself. The following day was Wednesday, I was on my way to work when mummy called me.

‘Maria just called me now. She advised that you should resign from your current place of work with immediate effect.’

Just like that? I sighed. ‘Okay, mummy.’

‘She also advises that you’ll get set and follow her to Lagos on Sunday.’

‘So fast?’

‘Yes. She wants you to be on ground, familiarize yourself with the place and be part of the team that will kick off the operations of the place.’

I sighed. ‘Okay, mum.’
