I long concluded we don't read enough and therefore do not know soooo many common words and their meanings. We hear a word being used and will match it with the one we know that sounds closest. We then use the word we know in place of the correct word.... after a time.. we believe it is the correct word.

Match is widely used instead of march.... to the extent that OP is defining march but believes he is defining match. He is not aware of it..... and in the same way we will go to interviews etc and misuse words. When we fail... we would never know where we went wrong... then all the blame goes to ...do I have to say which people?
