To honest though, I don't understand why people spend billions and billions of dollars on airports.
It is a holding place for air travellers, after all.

As long as you have the required safety standards and everything works fine, you don't need to go over the top.

I would rather the funds are spent in health care, education, social security, trade and roads.

It is business and investment, education and good health care that would bring the travellers in, not how overly splendid the airport is.

Though Morocco is pretty alright in those areas though.

My guy, Morocco health system still better naija own. cool

Why do you build a house and try to make it aesthetically appealing? You could as well build a box and move in since it's sole purpose is for shelter.

Countries spend billions of dollars on airports to create a good first impression. If you know anything about presentation or branding, you would realize that people make their decisions on something within the first few seconds... A lady sees a guy well dressed, speaking well and looking handsome and she already thinks within herself "If this guy woos me, I'd say yes".

MMIA in Lagos was leaking water the last time I flew into Nigeria and I saw buckets on the floor in the arrivals section of the airport. Tell me, which sane investor would invest in a country that can't even maintain an airport? Does it not even reflect in the Nigerian society that infrastructure is already dead?

Stay there and keep wondering, when common Ghana is almost doing better than Nigeria.

The difference between a standard airport and this overly splendid one could be in millions of dollars or even billions.

Is it worth it?

Nigerian airports are not the definition of standard one.

Nowhere did I say Nigeria should not upgrade.

But an edifice like this is not necessary. Not with poverty in the land.

Is this an excuse for Nigeria's two bedroom bungalow airport that we even call an airport?

So it would make sense for Nigeria to spend $5 billion on an airport, with the highest poverty rate in the world?

If anybody is actually going to visit your country, you think it's because of the airport?

Not true. Addis Ababa Airport is not fantastic, though it's more organised than Abuja and Lagos Airports.

Lol no, an Airport is the first thing any person would see when visiting any country. A country by the way is not just a geo expression but a brand. And the perception of a country's brand can bring billions into that economy. Reason why many countries spend millions of USD on advertisement and branding.

A beautiful airport surely should indicate organization, beauty and a thriving tourism sector and all... Most countries with great healthcare and education pay attention to the image of their countries too... And it's not as though Nigeria is leaving airports to focus on healthcare and education. Truth is Nigeria is governed haplessly, without any direction, priority or any focus..
Nobody is visiting your country because of the airport.
It is what you have to offer that brought them to your airport.

If Nigeria with high insecurity decides to build an airport like this , it won't improve our tourism in anyway.
People will not come in the first place, let alone to come and see the airport.

In fact, it would even piss off western conscience that a poor, highly unsecured is spending billions of dollars on a white washed image instead of tackling poverty and insecurity.

Yes, we agree that airports are a national image. But it is an icing on the cake.

Build the real cake first , then you can focus on the icing.

That is how China did it.

China already built the roads, Dams, hospitals and universities, before spending billions of dollars on vanity projects like their recently unveiled airport.

Nigerian airports are not standard. That is a fact.

We can build something standard and decent and still save money.

AutoReportNG:
Many at times, we never can appreciate the beauty of nature until when we go out and look at it from a different perspective. An International Airport is a place that says a lot about a country and this why this is why the federal government from various countries try to make their airports to match with international standard as this is their identity, they will be accessed based on what they see at the airport first before going into the city.

Airports in Africa are not friendly to the eyes as it seems various government cares less or little about how they are built, maintained and made to be among the world rankers. It's either the design is awful or little or nothing is done to make it a tourist attraction and lots more. Morocco seems to have a different perspective, they decided to upgrade virtually all their airports, redesign them and build a new one in order to according to the government, to attract tourist to the country.

Marrakesh Menara Airport (IATA: RAK, ICAO: GMMX), in French Aéroport de Marrakech Ménara, is the main international gateway in Marrakesh, the main city of the Marrakesh-Tensift-El-Haouz region in Morocco.

It is located 5 kilometres from Marrakesh city centre. The airport is an important hub between Europe and Northern Africa, serving also flights to other Arab nations.

The terminal extension of the Marrakech Menara Airport in Morocco is designed by Swiss Architects E2A Architecture and uses a gorgeous facade that has become a hallmark of the airport. Light filters into space by arabesques made up of 24 rhombuses and three triangles.

Clad in white aluminum panels and featuring stylized Islamic ornamental designs, the structure gives the terminal a brightness that changes according to the time of day. It’s also an excellent example of how a contemporary building can incorporate traditional cultural motifs.

A new airport terminal at Marrakech-Menara, the flagship touristic destination in Morocco was officially inaugurated Wednesday, 21 December, and will increase its capacity to 9 million passengers instead of 3 million currently.

The airport was inaugurated by HM King Mohammed VI, the new terminal aims to support the growth of Marrakech-Menara airport, the second of Morocco after Casablanca. It is an international facility that receives several European flights as well as flights from Casablanca and some of the Arab world nations. The airport served over 4 million passengers in 2014. In 2010, the airport was used in the movies Sex And City 2.

Located 3 km from downtown, the airport of Marrakech-Menara Airport is the second Moroccan airport in terms of traffic after Mohammed V in Casablanca. According to "Travel and Leisure, the new Terminal 1 at the airport is" an example of a successful marriage between traditional Islamic architecture and modern architecture. "

Marrakech-Menara has two terminals, Terminal 1 which was completely refurbished in June 2008, is fueled partly by solar energy. Terminal 2 was opened in 2005. A third terminal is planned for 2012 to bring the total capacity to 8 million passengers per year.

Facilities

Terminal

Menara Airport has two passenger terminals housed in one large building. A third terminal has been built. The existing T1/T2 offer a space of 42.000 m2 and have a designed capacity of 4.5 million passengers/year. The separate freight-terminal has 340m2 covered space. The air terminals (1 and 2) are 22,000 m2 (236,806 sq ft) and designed to handle 2,500,000 passengers per year. Menara is one of the six airports in Morocco where ONDA offers its special VIP service Salon Convives de Marque.

Runway and Apron

Aircraft parking space of 125,000 square metres (1,345,489 sq ft) supports up to fourteen Boeing 737s and four Boeing 747s. The cargo terminal is 340 m2 (3,660 sq ft) of covered space.[1] The paved runway is laid out in the direction 10/28 is 3,100 by 45 metres (10,171 ft × 148 ft). It can receive all modern jetliners up to the Boeing 747 in size. The airport is equipped with an ILS Cat II landing system and offers the following radio navigation aids: VOR – DME – NDB.

Buses Into The City
The Spanish bus company Alsa operates regular Route 19 buses every day between Marrakesh Menara airport and both the medina (the stop is in a row of bus stops opposite the Koutoubia Mosque) and the new town.
