What was his commitment to the national team during his active years ? Is he dedicated or not? If yes then NFF should just come to his aid coz during their playing days money was not yet in football

Insurance!!! No matter what you are doing, make sure you always insure yourself and invest well, but hope the government will come to his aid with this publicity

Nobody will care for him now but let him die they will celebrate him. Why not celebrate him now that he is alive? This is one of the reasons people are not patriotic.

when ppl complain of this, i wonder what civil servants who served this country for 35yrs will complain about. The truth is the country paid most of this footballers their dues earlier in life

Nigeria is not worth risking all for, I swear
Even though this people might have been reckless or careless with what they made in there hay days, atleast, it shouldnt have been incessant. That shows the country isnt worth giving one's all . So pathetic
I dont mean to sound mean but when he was balling, how well did he handle funds cos most of these footballers and celebrities, it is not that they didn't see money, but their extravagant lives or fake lives they couldn't sustain pushed them to be wasteful without thinking of their old age. Making hay while the sun shines isn't just for shining when you can but still shining even when its not.

Any small sickness, they call on Nigerians when even Nigerians need all the help they can get

Football wasn't so lucrative then in their days, I'm sure this guys would've been better off now...In regards to that, the sport ministry should been given this guys token every month for up keeping..I mean those that belong to that category.
if our football is well organized u won't see things like this...there is this former Madrid legend who had issues Real Madrid came to his aid that's cos they are well off...imagine a situation where clubs like rangers, enyimba, pillars etc are incorporated well...abroad players have contributory pensions ikpeba still collect his own...this thing ll continue until there is a proper structure...Now how about those civil servants who after 35years are owed and struggle to get their due did they not serve their countries...

I don't just understand always trying to blame the government for everything.
I'm sure the man has children, the footballers I know are always successful at least until they squander there savings.
Every one think the government owe them even the celebrities, it's just pathetic
how much do u think dis guy made...im no play abroad and hw lucrative is football in Nigeria even now except you play foreign league... if there was an organized framework am sure this man would still be getting pensions from the game...more so it shows how deep our country is na cos im na popular guy what of those who no sabi any body...lack a good social security framework...

So emotional to see this great sport patriot suffers and so unfortunate to see comments from some ignoramus saying the man should have saved for old age and asking was he not paid entitlement when he played for Nigeria.
I know some stories about this great man because we once lived under the same roof in Baruwa Ipaja town. He was a mentor to a lot of us who later became good footballers in our own way, every weekend, he usually took me and host of friends to the National Stadium for training and it was all for Free and for the love of the country. He also had a brother Austin Fregene, who also played for Nigeria but the guy is late. Peter Fregene was not really paid as much as other players that showed up in the early eighties, I knew quite well that he was always going to the sport ministry to pursue one payment or the other. He was also Coach Manager Of NEPA in Lagos and also in Warri. He mentored the likes of Peter Rufai and Okala and host of other Nigerian goalkeepers.
I have visited him in Ibadan at a specialist hospital couple of years back when his predicament started with severe back pains, his children are really trying their best but the government needs not forget our heroes past for their selfless service to the country. Peter Fregene is an Urhobo man from Delta state.

Stop commenting rubbish about him just for the sake of nairaland attention.
it's not rubbish..how about the civil servants who gave their all don't they deserve govt attention too...lets be honest wat we need is a working system...i learnt ikpeba still collect pensions from contributory earnings of his play abroad...can't we have such in Nigeria...how many ex players or sportsmen will govt keep remembering...fregene case is evidence of a failed system...a dysfunctional Society...as it is now players playing in Nigeria ought to have a working system of contributin for their future...cases like this should make us weep that we need to rejig this country..

What I remember about Peter Fregene is the 1986 Afcon in Libya when he parried an harmless corner kick into his own net in a match Nigeria lost to Zambia 3 nil.
Wishing him a speedy recovery though.
Nigeria did not qualify for that tournament! Where did you get this from?

Even Rayo Vallecano made sure that they paid Wilfred Agbonavbare's bills and had the best of care in Spain when he was dying of cancer, and his shirt was raised in the stadium before a high profile game when he passed.

This is a Spanish club doing this for a former Nigerian number 1. What did Nigeria his country do for him?

Moreover, this man I'm sure didnt make much during his time. They all wanted to play for the love of the country, that was how it was during their time I learnt

Any small sickness, they call on Nigerians when even Nigerians need all the help they can get
That's why I said even though some weren't prudent with what they made in their active years but then, let's compare them with the civil servants that the government isn't taking care of too through pension. If the government were paying them promptly, perhaps, they might not need to call Nigerians for help. Civil servants arent popular, but they're, that's why they can be related with what they did for the country.
The thing is this act of negligence by the govt will give make corruption fester more in the country.
A layman civil servant reading this news now, and he's able to swindle the government, is he going to be honest or swindle on the govt on time? Knowing fully well he wont be paid pension, that will cater for his old age. He'd rather steal now that he can than beg when he's old, he wont want to make the mistake this BABA and the others made years ago.
