Just like Nigeria, Norway is an oil-producing nation.

That notwithstanding, electric vehicles are being promoted to encouraging the adoption of zero-emission vehicles.

Also, the government has set an ambitious goal to stop selling new gas and diesel passenger cars and vans by 2025.

A recent report shows that Electric vehicles now sell more than carbon-fuel based vehicles. This is was recorded for the first time in April in Norway. This accounts for 58.4% of all vehicle sales in the country.

According to reports, in March, 18,375 new cars were registered in the country and 10,732 of those were zero-emission vehicles, according to Norway's Road Traffic Information Council, or OFV. That's more double the number of zero-emission vehicles sold in March 2018.

Telsa's Model 3 (TSLA) led the charge. The OFV says that 5,315 Model 3 sedans were registered in March, setting a record for sales of a single car model in a single month.

According to the Norwegian Electric Vehicle Association, the Norwegian government has instituted several incentives to ensure that people buy electric vehicles. For instance, electric cars owners are excluded from paying pay the 25% Value Added Tax (VAT) and are exempt from Norway's carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide and weight taxes imposed on gas and diesel vehicles. They also get discounts on parking, toll roads and ferries.

The Norwegian Electric Vehicle Association projects that electric vehicles will make up about 50% of the country's car sales in 2019.

There were also 3,469 hybrid passenger cars sold last month -- a 10% drop from March 2018.

The number of gas and diesel vehicle sales dropped to a record low.

Norway is a leader in the adoption of zero-emission vehicles.

The Nigerian National Assembly, some weeks ago, rejected a bill to encourage the use of Electric Vehicle in the country.

So with the continuous decline in petrol demand all over the world I wonder what Nigeria would lean on for foreign exchange earning.

May I be gone before Nigeria feels the heat

Nonsense!

Petrol is easier to get than electricity in this country.
You will need petrol to generate electricity.
The scenario will be...
Buy electric car.
Buy generator.
Buy Petrol.
Charge your car.
Buy Petrol.
Charge your car.

Same old song.
What a pathetic sh*thole

We are living in denial rather than think ahead. Private Universities can test run by setting up solar powered electric car charging stations within their campuses to power cars/ buses plying within their campuses.

Nigerians/Africans do not like innovation. You look at the nairaland website. It has been like this since it's inception. Now compare it with any foreign website that started around the same time with it. E.g Reddit, FB.

A very serious country.

Because they wanted to achieve this feat, they added incentives: No 25% tax, discounts on tolls, parking fees and the rest

Here, Nigerian rice is almost the same as the foreign rice(if not more). Made in Nigerian shoes can be more expensive than foreign ones.
Even the government official that will come to encourage Innoson or Proforce, came with a Toyota or Lexus.

Our politicians wont let this happen in Nigeria but then Nigeria has epileptic power supply, so the idea of electric vehicles won’t fly for now.

Lord Lugard, the former governor-general of Nigeria, in 1926, wrote his unfiltered thought about Nigerians. From his book, The Dual Mandates, come these excerpts: "In character and temperament, the typical African of this race-type is a happy, thriftless, excitable person, lacking in self-control, discipline, and foresight. Naturally courageous, and naturally courteous and polite, full of personal vanity, with little sense of veracity, fond of music and loving weapons as an oriental loves jewellery. His thoughts are concentrated on the events and feelings of the moment, and he suffers little from the apprehension for the future or grief for the past. His mind is far nearer to the animal world than that of the European or Asiatic, and exhibits something of the animals' placidity and want of desire to rise beyond the state he has reached.

"Through the ages, the African appears to have evolved no organised religious creed, and though some tribes appear to believe in a deity, the religious sense seldom rises above pantheistic animalism and seems more often to take the form of a vague dread of the supernatural. He lacks the power of organisation, and is conspicuously deficient in the management and control alike of men or business. He loves the display of power, but fails to realize its responsibility - he will work hard with a less incentive than most races. He has the courage of the fighting animal, an instinct rather than a moral virtue. In brief, the virtues and defects of his race -type are those of attractive children, whose confidence when it is won is given ungrudgingly as to an older and wiser superior and without envy. Perhaps, the two traits which have impressed me as those most characteristic of the African native are his lack of apprehension and his lack of ability to visualize the future"

Norway has actually stopped anything that has to do with oil. They've generated enough from it to the extent that the government decided to stop investing in it. They are one of the leading oil owners in the world but now they've rendered it useless.

Meanwhile, in the giant of Africa, a bill was killed promoting the use of electric vehicles probably to protect the oil industry.

My countri feefle; you are only denying the inevitable. The world is going electric and oil demand will fall globally. Demand for petrol / diesel vehicles will decrease and we will become a dumping ground for these cars....

Hmmm

Sincerely, this is the reason I detest statistics - the fact that it can be skewed by anyone to support a perspective.

To an ignorant reader in the global south, this news is enough to start bashing Nigeria and other developing countries for her perceived slow progress in combating climate change. However, the reader is not intimated that there are subtle policies in place to encourage such growth - higher taxes on fuel/diesel vehicles, fantastic financing options for these vehicles and some tax concessions and the fact that these countries have an ageing population who are 'wealthy'. This is Norway with the biggest SWF by any nation on earth. Folks here in England have EV's just for status. I see them charging these vehicles all afternoon at work. My friend and I still made a 170 miles trip (340 miles return) with £51 worth of diesel and had just below a quarter tank left. Now tell me if that's not efficient and cheap.

And before you start preaching about how Norway is embracing climate change and making progress, don't forget where Statoil/Equinor is based!

Oil is still the most important commodity in the world.
