Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazau has said the Federal Government has come up with plans of building modern prisons across the country. In an event held on Saturday in Abuja, the Minister said: “most of our prisons, particularly those situated in urban centres are more than a century old; over a hundred years old. So, what we do is to ensure that we build modern prisons that will meet the required universal standard for the treatment and rehabilitation of prison inmates”. Dambazzau offered some perspective at the inauguration of some projects at the Headquarters of the Nigeria Prisons Service (NPS) in the nation’s capital, Pulse NG reports. According to him, the moribund correctional facilities in the country are in dire need of rehabilitation or outright replacement and now is the time for the facilities to receive upgrade across the country. Nigeria has over 1,400 prisons across the country and most of them are in a poor state and over-populated. According to the NPS, there are over 73,000 inmates in these facilities with more than 23,000 convicted. No fewer than 49,000 inmates are awaiting trial for various offences they are said to have committed. https://lailasnews.com/federal-government-focused-on-building-modern-prisons-dambazau/ 2 Likes

First build industries and skill acquisition centres before talking about prisons. Countries like the Netherland is closing down its prison facilities because of low crime rate. Most of the citizens are gainfully employed, why will they take to crime?. Like the saying goes idle hand is the devils workshop. No man gainfully employed and busy will think about venturing into criminal activities. Build industries, create job first before thinking of building prisons for hardened criminals like many of you in government. 16 Likes |

tactius:It's on record that more than 70% of prison inmates in the country are awaiting trial. Some have been there for more than ten years for offences they didn't commit. I think the first step is to totally reform our judicial system to speed up the duration of trials. I totally support rehabilitation of our current prisons and all inmates with lesser criminal sentences. If the duration of awaiting trial is reduced it will drastically help to decongest the prisons. The most effective method to dissuade criminals is to create opportunities to make them busy not by building more prisons. "A busy criminal will commit less crime " 3 Likes |

CliffDike: Thank you sir. That is where schools, schools and more schools plus sustainable employment opportunities come in. Something that empty-headed bubu does not understand. Instead he is promoting almajiris to be used in election violence. www.nairaland.com/attachments/2027919_image_jpeg9f360c5ab7736510df54c882e9dbf188 4 Likes |
