I am a Nigerian in Germany with a German Masters degree. It's quite difficult to get professional jobs in Germany as an African as we are usually the last of the pack. The only luck I ever had was to get internships, internships that takes several months to get and usually only for short periods. The high percentage of Africans even with German Phds doing menial jobs is highly discouraging and depressing. Most are trapped in the race for survival and I can't imagine myself living life like them. I feel I could do better with my skills and education that spreads across Europe's top countries.

I made the decision to return to Nigeria, harness my skills and start up a processing company. At 25 and the sole breadwinner of an extended family, they are asking me to stay put, saying that the Nigerian environment is not good for business (I feel they are only scared of losing out on the goodies they get from me).

Also last year, the family introduced me to a female in the UK, talking about marriage to her. The said lady is a Nigerian within my age range, but born and raised in the UK. Though I have been to the UK severally to see her, I have made no commitments whatsoever as she is not the kind of lady I would marry all things being equal. She and the family have however given me a ultimatum to decide now.

What do you advice?

don't let anyone force you to marry someone you don't see fit

I think if you have enough knowledge, enough fund or you know how to get fund from BOI, the professional skill to manage such establishment, ambitious, persistent and does not give up easily, and you have conducted your market research to know the profitability and location that suits such establishment I think Nigeria is the best place you should be get to know people already in the business in Nigeria and learn how they have been able to cope and succeed

but if you've got those qualities and have not done what's expected don't bother, if you can succeed business wise in Nigeria you can succeed easily any where around the world

don't be at the foot of the leader over there just because your family are telling you not to come, you own your life

As a Nigerian professional in the UK, you have a better chance of getting a professional role in the UK if you move here.

Since you will need to rely on a spousal visa, you have no other alternative to come to the UK.

On a more serious note, if your proposed wife was born and raised in the UK, there is a high probability that she will never behave like the typical Nigerian wife ( cook, clean, being receptive to your family members, house chores etc).

You have a choice to make here. If she is from a good family, you can teach her loads of our traditional Nigerian values while in the marriage but be rest assured the marriage MUST last for 5yrs before you can be granted a permanent residence.

Thanks for your advice. I kinda notice there's been no advice on Nigeria. Are you writing her off in business terms?

And please, may I ask why.

You can make $4000 to $6000 per month in Nigeria in business, especially if you have skills for web based businesses. While that's chicken change in comparison to the average earning in Europe or North America, if you earn that here, you'd be at least be able to live comfortably and travel at will and can easily prop yourself up.
So, if you're looking for a business in Nigeria, try to avoid physical based ones as a startup.

Dude from your post, these are my reservations:
1. You are hungry for success- Good.
2. You care so much about family- Good
3. You let people’s opinion define your actions atimes- bad
3.you would consider marrying a woman to secure a good life, if UK works fine, you would show more love to the woman.- you love is conditional, your zeal for success/ professional jobs will make you go against your conscience- bad.
4. You haven’t done your research well. Aside being book smart, you got to be street smart. Street smart means combing people to buy you. Not everyone has this ability. Introverts don’t. I k ow there are formality and process in the western world but as black man you gotta forget the formalities bro. Look beyond your STEM Degree. Consider other countries, apply to those countries. You mentioned IT, isn’t it wisdom to shift to where it seems to be paying. I myself is an engineer but you find that IT is in all sectors now. Everyone is doing something related to IT in their jobs. Everyone is talking data which is more of IT and so I had to upskill myself. Upskill your self before you even consider Uk or Nigeria. You have a year to do menial jobs and upskill yourself. Hello bro, no one will hire you just because you have a German Masters... mention the skills you have.
5. You are still young and fit into trainee age range in Nigeria, so apply for the jobs.

with all sincerity o speak in me. it is true that Nigerian environment is harsh for business, but the Nigerian environment reward you more to any other place on earth for business. Chinese, Lebanese, Americans which every nationale you see in Nigeria, succeeds her in business in Nigeria. it is true that it tougher to do Business here to any other place in the world. look man the market is key to what ever business and Nigeria has the largest market force in the whole of Africa and one of 10 biggest market force in the world. stop allowing uninformed people advice you. I'm an entrepreneur and yes I face lot of challenge's every single day, but I am being rewarded for dealing with these challenges. I'm already starting my second business while the previous is self running already. my brother, I swear by the one who make heavens and earth Nigeria is rich with billions of opportunity that you will know that government jobs are for low people whom chose settle for less. believe you me, you make money and become rich in places with lot of problems and challenges to places where there are little or none. tell me what ever it is have to sell to Nigeria and I will tell you how much wealth you will make.

Bros you don't want to love that girl. Open your heart and you will love the girl. E be like you no know wetin Nigeria dey pass through. The highest work a graduate can get here without connection is Receptionist or one 25k work. Startups in Nigeria tend to fail most times. I have friends that graduated and served years before me all unemployed; everyday travelling to the ends of the country for one interview or the other. It's more or less a committee of unemployed graduates. It's that bad that we no longer feel bad about our situation. By June another set will pass out and increase our number. As it is anywhere is better than Nigeria. Continue to visit the UK and see if things shape up between you and this girl. Why is it that women see us as an opportunity why can't we do the same, what bleeping pride do we have. There's nothing stopping you from loving her on the long run. Take a shot with the relationship. It's not like your options in Germany are that vast since you have just one more year. Should it fail to kick off in the UK you can return home. If you know the way boys dey find whitey to take pity on us and marry us you no go dey talk like this. Even if na cripple we don't mind. You go shock for the way I go love the cripple even she go dey fear. Truth be told there's not much here

If you are not truly convinced about her please come back to Nigeria and start your own business if you have your money or stay there in Germany and start good business.

There are many business you can do there and make money. Some of those business are Dropshipping, Affiliate promotion like Clickbank Affiliate that you will spend less money and still make cool cash.

Dont go to UK to go and marry someone you font have feelings for so that it will not turn into something else.

She was born in UK, been in UK 2ru out her life and if anything happen tomorrow she can divorce you my man.

Think very well....

Oh well my second piece of advice is this;
Does any member of ur family run a business?
Do u have a trusted brother than can run a business for you?
How many Lands or houses have u secure?
Do u know y I asked this question?
Have a critical thinking of wat is going on in USA......
All the benefits Obama brought for both citizens nd non citizens have been scrapped off by Donald Trump
Mind you the world at large is in Economic, Financial nd political crisis........
Someone says dont come back home for the future of ur children hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Do u think Germany, Canada etc can not wake up one morning nd say foreigners are taking up there jobs?
Which may lead to deportation........
See wat is happening in South Africa........
Mind u Germany nd those European countries are just using Us as modern slaves.....
Finally everybody has told u there own point of view
But I advise u to pray nd fast for God to review His plans for u....... If God says ur destiny is in Nigeria there's nothing u can do in Europe to make u succeed nd if He says ur destiny is in Europe there's nothing that will make u to make it in Nigeria.
Remember u must one day come back home if not alive ur Dead body must surely arrive ur soil.
If I want Gods favor do away with anything sin because it can barricade ur blessings.......
Thank u God bless!

I am not very good with commenting. However I feel there is a need to clear the misconception that every Nigeria leaving in Europe survives on cleaning, care or security jobs that is simply not true

The key to a professional job in any western country is integration. Yes it could be more difficult when you are still finding your feet but when you do, your career objectives would be limited by your own thinking

Key word : INTEGRATION after IMMIGRATION

My advice to you is based on real experience.(both as a Nigerian and UK national)

I work as an Instrumentation and Controls Engineer in one of the biggest company in its sector in UK and my family based in Germany (wife is German)

For the record my cycle of friends are professionals as well.

Move to the UK
i repeat, move to the UK.

I dont know about marrying the said girl but if thats what it takes, you only get that opportunity once, take it. Life is all about compromise. if it works out fine. if it doesnt, you move on as a british citizen. As a british passport owner, you are better off and unlimited. When you look at the worst case scenerio, remember Biafra guy, the only reason he had an option to escape is because he is british.

The consequences of choosing nigeria are better left imagined.

My reservations about moving to the UK

- I hate being at the mercy of others. Going to the UK on a spousal permit means losing my German residency and I'll be at her mercy. As should anything go wrong with the relationship , I'll have to leave the UK.

- Getting a professional job. It doesn't make sense to go to the UK and continue to be trapped in menial jobs. I have been there and I hardly see Nigerians in professional jobs except those with rich parents. Someone should advice me on that as it could not be a real reflection.

My Reservations about Nigeria

- High rate of startup failure
- Difficulty in getting loans to expand. I have heard they can ask for even your neck in those times. With a lack of collateral, more difficult.

For those asking about my course, Yes it's a STEM degree.

Bro, everything you said about uk and Germany is 100% correct, I studied in the UK. Blacks hardly get professional jobs in the uk, especially black Africans without red passport. But you have a choice between Germany and uk. Nigeria is not an option for now if you havent acquired a german passport. How good is you knowledge of German language (reading and writing)?

There are opportunities in Nigeria in terms of professional jobs if you come back, but then again, it's good to have an escape plan if your job search does not work in your favor.

About the UK girl, there is no need marrying her as we all know how it would end, as you don't fancy her.

If you don't have a german passport yet, I would suggest you stay put, fast and pray, God will surely answer, bless you with your dream job in germany.

Please do not marry the UK lady. You said she's not your type, do not get into marriage that you'll live to regret for the rest of your life. Secondly, please remove"return to Nigeria" from your options, the country is now a nightmare. You can try migrating to other countries like Canada, new Zealand or Australia

This life ehn. We've got Nigerian students from Canada come to Germany because of lack of skilled opportunities. They say there is discrimination on lack of Canadian degrees and Canadian experience. Also, honest reviews from Quora don't help. It seems many skilled migrants in Canada are also trapped in these same unskilled jobs.

I would have gone to Canada long ago if not for that. I felt the money to be wasted on the processing of the Canadian PR to go get unskilled jobs could be better channelled to my business projects in Nigeria.

The real truth is not that they are professional jobs out there looking for people but professional people who can do the job. Even if you are a waitress in a bar, there has to be some level of professional approach to it to make it legit and harassment free. A stripper even can be a professional and thats why one can do any job.

its only in nigeria or a nigerian that feels you be head of departments to be professional or sit in one big office and dishing orders before you can feel among. Those driving buses in the UK are some of the highest paid in the UK and it just require you to be professional.

The only country where i think professionalism cant work is nigeria and i repeat, relocating back home without being a passport holder of one of these developed nations is a bad idea. i can bet you, for now, fustration will set in and going out isnt easy coming in. people drinking sniper and jumping bridges are on the high....

Dear Writer,

I completed my master's degree in Germany and also completed 4 internships back to back. Of course resettling in a new country is not an easy process but do not make it look like Germany is so hard - No. I am currently in my second job as a chemical engineer with a chemical company here and of course it was not an easy ride getting the job but eventually I landed the job.
I have a few questions for you?
- Do you speak basic german at least?
- How many career fairs did you attend?
- Did you make effort to improve on the local language?
- What did you study? How is the market in that branch of industry?

It is easy to make it look like Germany is a no-go for professionals but there are many and I mean many Africans working in industry all over the country. Find out how the Cameroonians have made lasting success in the country professionally. Go on Linkedin and see the many Africans in industry here. It would require a lot of work but that is the situation as a foreigner trying to integrate in a new system - be it UK or Germany or US. I mean your master's degree cost you nothing in comparison to what you would have had to pay in US, Canada or UK for the same course you did. Keep trying and applying; and if you have to stay in Germany do try to learn some german.

If you do not connect with the lady in UK, do not subscribe to that marriage. Your misery could triple if you have to share an apartment with someone you have no chemistry with and then being bossed around because she saved you by marrying you...just a friendly advice. Goodluck!

You talk like a brave man. I just got admission into RWTH Aachen University to study Applied Geoscience.
Please I would like to have a conversation with you in private. I just sent you a pm

This guy will regret stepping foot in this country called Nigeria

E be like say you no dey hear word ba?

Wait ooo...do you think jobs/clients would jump at you because you schooled in Germany?

Don't you listen to or read the news?

Do you know how high the unemployment rate is currently?

Do you not know that power generation has dropped in the last 4 yrs?

I stay in Abuja (Airport road) and I have not seen light in 2 days now. I don't stay in a rural area ooo. Its very urban.

Do you know that once some people get wind of your arrival in Naija, you could be kidnapped even in the hotel? Nowhere is safe and no one can be completely trusted.

Why not try other countries. Even if you get the opportunity to teach in a high school, start from there.

You want to leave paradise and come and dine with Lucifer in hell. What the hell is wrong with you?

That's how one of my pharmacist friend left his job in the UK (a pharmacy job) for Nigeria. Now he is stuck and wants to go back.

Your family members don't want you to come and be a burden to them. Forget about what they may be benefiting from you. As a neutral person, I'm telling you to stay. I still feel there are better living and working conditions there than here.

Please do not aim to be an unfortunate fellow. Many Yankee returnees are dragging jobs with the locals here in Naija. Don't be fooled thinking your foreign certificate gives you an edge over a Nigerian certificate unless you have an Harvard MBA.

I don talk too much sef. If I see you in this country ehn, na pestle I go use reset your thinking.

Good luck bro. All the best

You my thoughts...

I am beginning to believe that his age is playing negetive role on him...

Or village people are really working hard for his return to HELL!
