I am a Nigerian in Germany with a German Masters degree. It's quite difficult to get professional jobs in Germany as an African as we are usually the last of the pack. The only luck I ever had was to get internships, internships that takes several months to get and usually only for short periods. The high percentage of Africans even with German Phds doing menial jobs is highly discouraging and depressing. Most are trapped in the race for survival and I can't imagine myself living life like them. I feel I could do better with my skills and education that spreads across Europe's top countries.

I made the decision to return to Nigeria, harness my skills and start up a processing company. At 25 and the sole breadwinner of an extended family, they are asking me to stay put, saying that the Nigerian environment is not good for business (I feel they are only scared of losing out on the goodies they get from me).

Also last year, the family introduced me to a female in the UK, talking about marriage to her. The said lady is a Nigerian within my age range, but born and raised in the UK. Though I have been to the UK severally to see her, I have made no commitments whatsoever as she is not the kind of lady I would marry all things being equal. She and the family have however given me a ultimatum to decide now.

What do you advice?

why not take a trip down Nigeria and start a business with the little you have gathered and you can leave back to Germany but make sure you put a capable hand to handle everything no family hand use a very professional hand and make sure you are up to date with the happenings around on maximum of weekend bases. you make sure all transaction and balance sheet are computerised so you can get access to every information electronically and you can control the business from overseas, that way will be able to if coming back here is a good idea. and one more thing, one of the major reason businesses fail in Nigeria is lack of proper planning and selfish management

The real truth is not that they are professional jobs out there looking for people but professional people who can do the job. Even if you are a waitress in a bar, there has to be some level of professional approach to it to make it legit and harassment free. A stripper even can be a professional and thats why one can do any job.

its only in nigeria or a nigerian that feels you be head of departments to be professional or sit in one big office and dishing orders before you can feel among. Those driving buses in the UK are some of the highest paid in the UK and it just require you to be professional.

The only country where i think professionalism cant work is nigeria and i repeat, relocating back home without being a passport holder of one of these developed nations is a bad idea. i can bet you, for now, fustration will set in and going out isnt easy coming in. people drinking sniper and jumping bridges are on the high....

Here is one of the comment that usually upset me..
Make money through innovative and build a good structure of life for your children regardless where ever you find yourself..

However, I would advice you to have enough before deciding to go to Nigeria.. sure you can explore with your talent plus capital..

Firstly, I'll advice you to marry the lady from the UK if the lady truly loves you, all you need is to do an assessment of your own definition of an ideal woman. Try to wither off some unnecessary and unrealistic desire, look for all the positives in the lady and move on with your life.

Secondly, Germany has limited opportunities for foreigners compared to the UK because of language barrier. You can build a professional life with your big dream and great sense of commitment in the UK, you only need some information from the people who has been in the jobs, as long as you have the right status to take those jobs.

Thirdly, going to Nigeria involves a lot of risks which if you don't get it right, you might regret the day you were born. It's one thing to have some kind of business ideas, but it's another to have an environment that could support your business.

Remember, it's been a while that you left Nigeria, trust me it will take some time to cope with the way things work in that country, couple with the fact that you'll be coming from a country where the system works and people tends to trust each other. Unlike Nigeria, trust is very uncommon.

I didn't say no job. I said lack of getting professional jobs.

Some people, Yes maybe, especially if you studied IT. A very large majority is trapped in menial jobs, not even full-time ones, the ones you get with unskilled employment agencies. Even with PhDs and all that. I wouldn't call that a great life. But to some people, it is. You have to understand perspectives.

I have a female Nigerian here who is employed with an agency and goes to clean people's home. She is quite happy and considers it a great opportunity considering that sometimes she joins the family on dinner outings and get gifts. It's great for her but not for me. I wouldn even accept something like that as I think It's no less than being a maid

Will you be able to survive in Germany, Yes. If you're someone with a big dream, I'll say difficult.

In Germany: Germans> EU nationals>US>Eastern Europe >Asians>Indians/Paki etc >Africans. That's the order of getting professional jobs.
Same shit Happens in the UAE too

Every one is saying Nigeria is bad and people are running away. So who are the people making Nigeria this bad? It is obviously them and thank God they are leaving. Because they will still go abroad and misbehave and end up in jail.

All I will say is endure and get your German passport. In that time, save, save, save and go to a German language school to brush up on the language if you are not yet proficient in it. That time you are waiting for your passport to come out is the time to plan what you will do in Nigeria. Limit the amount of money you send home and save your money.

Make plans to get a flat for at least 2-3yrs in a decent and safe area and make your move. Look, not everyone is comfortable with an average life. Some people want a life where they can do something significant. Don’t let these people here mislead you about Nigeria. A lot of them shouting Nigeria is bad are the problem of Nigeria. They lie, steal, cheat and are even trying to scam you right now. Take your time to plan your move.

Don’t even think about marrying someone you have no feelings for. Life is too short for that. You are better off going to the UK and finding a girl that you like instead of the one forced on you. I wish you goodluck and success as you chart out your life plan. Nigeria is flush with opportunities but everybody wants to be an Oga with car, driver and housegirl straight out of university. While stealing from the employer and they expect the job to last and keep them secure. As if Sango is in their CEO’s cupboard vomiting money.

God saved me I returned to see the opportunities I left behind.
I thank God
I'm visiting that country 3 times a year now on 2wks stay each
After making same observation about UK some years ago, I came back home. I still discover many Nigerians don't know how these things work. The system there takes everything away from you even though it seems at first like the salary is huge especially when converted to naira. grin
The system was not built for us, it was built for them.

I must appreciate the poster's sincerity as opposed to how majority of Nigerians resident in first world nations present the west. I don't think the poster has the wrong mindset. He is at a stage in life where tough decisions need to be made and he is trying to be careful. It is only on nairaland that I consistently hear/read of Nigerians doing well in the west. Majority of Africans are struggling in the west. I also struggled during my college days in east coast USA despite getting a generous allowance from home. Nigerians are also struggling back home in Nigeria. In UK where I lived for 2 years + the story is the same. I don't know much about the poster's academic and social background but I'll suggest he reflects on his strengths and weaknesses in both spheres and make a decision based on that. The west can be attractive when young and at your prime but as you age your priorities and interests get to change and some begin to miss the African life.

Don't marry such lady.If you marry a toxic one as many of them are you will end up failing in your education and career as you will loose focus in life.Abroad is 80% focus on the ball.If you marry a toxic person that will cause distraction in your life, you will end up in minimum wage and then welfare before you are 50.Why are you in a hurry .She never paid for your flight to Germany. If they are desperate they should fly down to Nigeria and pay for flight and green card for those jobless young boys in travel section of Nairaland. You have option of Canada or Australia or starting your good business idea in Nigeria

Bros you don't want to love that girl. Open your heart and you will love the girl. E be like you no know wetin Nigeria dey pass through. The highest work a graduate can get here without connection is Receptionist or one 25k work. Startups in Nigeria tend to fail most times. I have friends that graduated and served years before me all unemployed; everyday travelling to the ends of the country for one interview or the other. It's more or less a committee of unemployed graduates. It's that bad that we no longer feel bad about our situation. By June another set will pass out and increase our number. As it is anywhere is better than Nigeria. Continue to visit the UK and see if things shape up between you and this girl. Why is it that women see us as an opportunity why can't we do the same, what bleeping pride do we have. There's nothing stopping you from loving her on the long run. Take a shot with the relationship. It's not like your options in Germany are that vast since you have just one more year. Should it fail to kick off in the UK you can return home. If you know the way boys dey find whitey to take pity on us and marry us you no go dey talk like this. Even if na cripple we don't mind. You go shock for the way I go love the cripple even she go dey fear. Truth be told there's not much here

Recently, I became totally disillusioned with Nigeria and decided I made a terrible mistake not leaving Nigeria in 2014 when I started a business. FYI, I own a private school business and it’s currently five years, and the past five years has been hell. My health at some point even deteriorated and my marriage faced serious crisis. A month ago during the holiday, it was my birthday, and I was dead broke. And I wasn’t even certain if I wanted to continue with the business.

Fast forward to today, we resumed this term, and it’s as if the heavens just opened for me. I have registered several children, as people are beginning to respect the quality of services I am providing. So you know, my school is expensive and we go for competitions including international ones. We are now getting plenty patronage and I just returned from the reception after attending to new intakes to relax. And with the positive news people are bringing to me, right now my school is considered one of the best around. And for days, I’ve been dazzled by this sudden success and good fortune and I am so grateful and joyous. Yes, I am in the same Nigeria that was frustrating the hell out of me a month ago.

I am easily going to pay off some of my debts and not all, right now I am confident before the year ends I will clear my entire debt so far I don’t reduce my quality and secondly I am traveling by God’s grace during this next holiday for fun and not to go and hustle. With the ways things are currently going for me, I don’t imagine ever leaving Nigeria, God forbid. And i am even beginning to believe by 2024 I’d be able to pay $500k to pay a residence in the US or Dubai and visit whenever I want to relax.

See, you can make it whenever you are, but what you really need is a compass. A map to guide you to your dreams and the grace to not quit your journey before it’s payday. For a five years old business making roughly 10 million yearly profit minus over 20 million expenses...because I am still building everyday, I think I can double that in a year or two and quadruple it in the next five years.

Like I said, just have a plan and know the darkest hours comes before the sunlight.

like I tell most people I can travel out for business and pleasure but say running away? never. yes everyday you might see one or two things which will make you feel you never which to be a Nigeria but then again all the problems we face today is as a result of how collective actions. if we all decides to the right thing the country will be a better place. some people talk about the politicians as if they are from mars or another country, they are just like everyday Nigerians with wrong mindset and when they get to a political office, the result is what we are experiencing.

My reservations about moving to the UK

- I hate being at the mercy of others. Going to the UK on a spousal permit means losing my German residency and I'll be at her mercy. As should anything go wrong with the relationship , I'll have to leave the UK.

- Getting a professional job. It doesn't make sense to go to the UK and continue to be trapped in menial jobs. I have been there and I hardly see Nigerians in professional jobs except those with rich parents. Someone should advice me on that as it could not be a real reflection.

My Reservations about Nigeria

- High rate of startup failure
- Difficulty in getting loans to expand. I have heard they can ask for even your neck in those times. With a lack of collateral, more difficult.

This life ehn. We've got Nigerian students from Canada come to Germany because of lack of skilled opportunities. They say there is discrimination on lack of Canadian degrees and Canadian experience. Also, honest reviews from Quora don't help. It seems many skilled migrants in Canada are also trapped in these same unskilled jobs.

I would have gone to Canada long ago if not for that. I felt the money to be wasted on the processing of the Canadian PR to go get unskilled jobs could be better channelled to my business projects in Nigeria.

It's not pure hogwash. In Europe by law, the citizens of a country are first considered before other EU nationals then other citizens of the global North (regions with plenty acronyms like the EEA, EFTA etc.) before citizens of the global south. It's not wrong, it's the law and I understand why.

Majority of the jobs in the EU are not reserved for its citizens alone. Even in the U.S we have jobs reserved exclusively for citizens but they represent less than 10% of the job opportunities available. There is no European law that flat out encourages discrimination!
