I am a Nigerian in Germany with a German Masters degree. It's quite difficult to get professional jobs in Germany as an African as we are usually the last of the pack. The only luck I ever had was to get internships, internships that takes several months to get and usually only for short periods. The high percentage of Africans even with German Phds doing menial jobs is highly discouraging and depressing. Most are trapped in the race for survival and I can't imagine myself living life like them. I feel I could do better with my skills and education that spreads across Europe's top countries.

I made the decision to return to Nigeria, harness my skills and start up a processing company. At 25 and the sole breadwinner of an extended family, they are asking me to stay put, saying that the Nigerian environment is not good for business (I feel they are only scared of losing out on the goodies they get from me).

Also last year, the family introduced me to a female in the UK, talking about marriage to her. The said lady is a Nigerian within my age range, but born and raised in the UK. Though I have been to the UK severally to see her, I have made no commitments whatsoever as she is not the kind of lady I would marry all things being equal. She and the family have however given me a ultimatum to decide now.

What do you advice?

Well I would advice you try Canada.Express Entry, your age is a great blessing, I wish I was your age now. You still have at least 5 years to manoeuver and get your footing. Don't get married yet in my humble opinion. Your views about a suitable partner may likely change over the next few years also. I left Nigeria last quarter of 2017 for Canada, and I see lots of success stories. I am counting down to my citizenship application, which is sometimes next year. I love Nigeria, I still nurture great plans to be back and contribute my quota , however, I will secure my self and family first....via citizenship. i have made it clear to my wife, I wil be back to Naija. I am also counting down on my mortgage, as I am six months old already, and have reduced the mortgage duration to 18 yrs by overpaying. .

Going to Nigeria, It is not completely a bad idea, but you must conduct your SWOT analysis, and understand the weakness and threats. If you will decide to go back to Nigeria, make sure you have at the very least in the neighborhood of 20 million naira , roughly 50,000 euros as savings that you are bringing back. When you are in naija, you can invest close to half in treasury bills and bonds to guarantee living wage , while you navigate the business world. It is tough but doable.....

To chime in, as someone who lives and engages in business in Nigeria, I can candidly advice you to get another citizenship before moving back. Doing business here is VERY tough. Not to say that people are not successful but there is a vast difference between business plans and reality.

You are just in your 20s. You come across as smart and focused. You can (legally) move to Canada or Australia via one of the skilled immigration pathways, try to get a professional job as you desire waiting the 3 to 5 years to get your passport.
I wouldn’t advice you to marry the woman that you’re not even attracted to because of UK citizenship. No one deserves that.

In summary, keep trying to get a professional job while your German permit is still active. Start the application process for Canada or Australia. Move there and do your best. Yes, it’s tough to get a professional job without Canadian experience but it’s NOT impossible. You can also start a business there. You mentioned agriculture. There are provinces in Canada that are rich in Agric opportunities plus they have supportive government schemes and grants to support.

If you are still dreaming of Nigeria, that’s a good thing, keep working on your plan. Test our certain aspects remotely and move back AFTER you have your second passport. All the best.

Thanks for your advice. I kinda notice there's been no advice on Nigeria. Are you writing her off in business terms?

And please, may I ask why.

Listen....

I am a Nigerian who relocated to the US to go hustle...some years ago. I went on a visa, to do what guys normally do- over stay visa, marry change status and live the American dream

My friends were doing it and it seemed kinda cool. Got to the US- the NE, got a survival job, was zeemingly living well, facebook pictures and all. Got into a bramch of IT(without papers) with w9 tho,and was earning like 20 an hour, which was something, though it wasnt steady, steady work.

To supplement i was a pizza driver by the side, also doing doordash, instashopper and all. But somehow, i was not happy, i knew i could do better.

To get any headway, i knew i had to marry-an akata or someone to get my stay to be legit and begin to work on a w2 with big companies getting steady pay.

I couldnt save enough to pay a girl $10k for marriage and the women loving me, were these obese, fat ugly ones who may be rich, but meeeeehn, getting an erection every night to service her for the 3 or 5yrs it would take me to get my PR was a no no.i cant keep up with pretense that long.

For how long would i then consider staying in the US as an overstay hoping for big break when i even got in, in my late 30's? The people,we(me and some friends from Naija who we came in together) looked upto were doing uber, amazon flex and Lyft. The big boys considered themselves car dealers- i come US come dey ship moto go back naija?

That seemed to be the immediate aspiration and so I asked myself, soooo, i will be drivung Uber in America? Taxi? Or be doing car dealer(which i didnt even have the money to go into) going to auction every tuesday and thurrsday? Thats the dream?

My IT work, those my managers and supervisors who paid me $20 an hour had bsen in the field for 30yeats and they always got to site before me and left after me, atimes 10hrs straight of work. So i asked mysf at what point will these peoplw rest?.At 70? 80? Because people with that kind of expeerice ( and i am talking master) are on the penthouse office in Lagos directing staff through managers. Here, they were still on the field. Haba

I decided i was coming back to Nigeria. I knew a couole of big wigs i felt qould give me a soft landing, but meeeehn, it hqs been hell since. Nothing has worked since i came back.

Ans i came back without money.

Now, all my hopes rests on a former Boss of mine who has is handling a huge govt project (we have been exchnaging notes on for the past three months)for the nexr 10years, totalling almost $12billion in execution.

If he calls me, hopefully within the next 48hrs,I would have been saved by the bell. If he doesnt, then i am doomed and oming back would perhaps be the biggest mistake of my life.

Look before you leap bro. Nigeria is hell, but by all means do not settle for menial jobs. But by all means, have a good alternative
Wow sad

You have been dishing facts upon facts all day man!

In Nigeria, they treat Okada riders and bus drivers with disdain. Same people tell drivers abroad “thank you” as acts of courtesy but sometimes these racist drivers don’t respond and the Naija hypocrites move on as tho “maybe the driver didn’t hear me”.

I’ve always respected and treated all menial workers in Nigeria with optimal respect unlike most Nigerians as pointed out. Some of these people antagonising your posts here may not respond to the greeting of a LAWMA neighbour in public on their way to work when they are with their colleagues because they don’t want people on the Island to know how they are connected to a LAWMA cleaner. Hypocrites!

Ride on bro, keep spilling facts!

99.99 % of the people here have never been to Germany nor the UK, they don't even have ordinary passport picture let alone International passport. Your question is like asking Amadioha if he thinks a Mercedes is better than a Range rover.

Don't mind the ones saying they are here and there, they will lead you to fire (most of them are doing the same cleaning jobs and mortuary attendant jobs).

You are the person who is wearing the shoes, pursue your plans because life is short. Do your SWOT analysis then make a decision.

Are you saying Amadioha isn't capable of telling between a Mercedes and a Range Rover? Are you aware that Amadioha is capable of striking you down because of that blasphemy?

1. Get a second citizenship first. Do not, repeat NOT come back to Nigeria without it, if you are considering coming back.

2. If you can get that from Germany, I think you shouldn't marry the UK lady.

3. Otherwise try Canada or Australia PR. At 25, you're lucky - you're well educated, damn young and you have options and time to see what these options can yield.

4. Repeat: DO NOT COME BACK TO NIGERIA WITHOUT A SECOND CITIZENSHIP.

This life ehn. We've got Nigerian students from Canada come to Germany because of lack of skilled opportunities. They say there is discrimination on lack of Canadian degrees and Canadian experience. Also, honest reviews from Quora don't help. It seems many skilled migrants in Canada are also trapped in these same unskilled jobs.

I would have gone to Canada long ago if not for that. I felt the money to be wasted on the processing of the Canadian PR to go get unskilled jobs could be better channelled to my business projects in Nigeria.

If you have enough , why don't you try importing tokunbo cars from Germany to Nigeria and ask a trusted relation or dealer to help you sell while monitoring things from there

The car section on nairalanders is filled with lots of gurus you can learn from. That way you can still keep doing your menial jobs and raising money to return to naija.

You can also learn digital and tech skill which will enable you earn online from home. t least you will have the foreign residency to your advantage.

Go through nairaland and be prayerful , your way will open this year by Gods grace.

Hmmm, interesting.

I guess the good portion of those Nigerians being stuck doing menial jobs in the US must be either those who are lazy or with illegal status.

Not true , menial jobs require a lot of hard work so laziness is not the problem. Honestly in the US, I have seen a Nigerians have different jobs from cleaner to business owners. The opportunities are there because of capitalism. But the US is tightening up their immigration. In more socialist countries like U.K. or Canada , opportunities are even difficult for the native borne citizens, so will it be harder for immigrants . The U.K. is tightening up their immigration , marrying a U.K. does not grants automatic status. In the Canada it’s easier to get papers but it well documentated that immigrants especially Africans work below their qualifications even in the long run .

I only go to UK with tourist visas. If I am to work and see the situation of things, I have to marry her.

We are talking about a human heart here. It's callous to marry her and leave after 6 months when I find out the UK is not for me.

That menial jobs is better than coming to Nigeria except maybe your family is rich here in Nigeria .

You have only spent less than 5 years in Germany , it takes time to settle in Europe because they have a very skilled workforce that you have to compete with. My brother stay back and hustle your life there and get your residency before you plan coming to Nigeria

Don't be deceive, Nigeria is terrible and a third world country of which you don't know what will happen in a second in Nigeria .

We Africans have this entitlement mentality that if you get a degree you must see a with collar jobs. Blue collars jobs is the key to advanced economy .

The minimum wage is good for the menial jobs, for the future of your kids . Please do not come back bro

His future is not going to be bright if works menial jobs. Who told you that menails jobs pay like that? He is going to be spending the money where he lives. Most minimum wage workers live paycheck to paycheck to cover their expenses, a lot of times they don’t even have enough.

No necessary true.

It depends on how much is being paid from that menial jobs and how much hours with overtime they are willing to work for.

Do not be deceived , people that come back to naija are rich kids of which their parents will fund their marriages, give them apartments without rents, give them security assurance ( money , business contacts and many more ).

500k salary in Naija can never sustain you when you start raising kids and your family will be on you if you are not from average family .

Germany is free schools and health care for you kids. Do you know how much is a decent school in naija and decent accomodation. It is easier to take loan in Germany as time the goes on to start your own company.

No such facility in Nigeria . He is still a very young man he will never do the menial jobs all his life .

There is no point arguing with you. You believe whatever you want to believe. US, Canada, UK, Australia, they are no heaven but if you work hard, you will make money. The problem with some Nigerians here is that they lack professional skills and are quick to settle for less. I have wanted to help two gentlemen here but their CVs alone were so disappointing that I didn't even bother responding back to them. 80% of Nigerians here lack viable technical skills and they don't even want to learn. If you want to make money here, it's either you go into health sector or IT industry. Other than these, you are on your own here!
