Babyvet:You should have asked the op some pertinent questions like, what did he study? How well does he speak the language? You attend a University and study a non-commercial course just for the sake of studying Abroad. He mentioned STEM, that is ambiguous. |

justwise:How many it companies or business are sponsoring Nigerians .Job sponsorship is very low right now . You must be one of a kind to get it now . In the US , Indians have claimed the IT market. Look at the visa bulletin for the US for 2018. Only about 495 Nigerians got employed preference visa, now compare that to the thousands of students who come into the US per year to study. https://travel.state.gov/content/dam/visas/Statistics/AnnualReports/FY2018AnnualReport/FY18AnnualReport%20-%20TableIII.pdf |

I think the biggest problem we Nigerians face is wanting to get big overnight and wanting instantaneous results. First things first , 'menial jobs' or casual jobs are something almost everyone in the west does at one stage of their lives. I've lived in Canada for several years since I was a teen and virtually all my friends who are canadians started doing menial jobs at 16/17 (waitress , chef , delivery guys, facility maintenance). But a lot of nigerians think they are too big for that, It wasn't till recession hit and naira dropped that many international students got part time jobs at walmart and the likes. With the exception of canadian kids whose parents are in the top 5% , they've all worked this same menial jobs . The truth is you cant go somewhere new and instantly expect to be living large. Although I know its tough leaving your job as bank manager in nigeria and you have to start working as a security guard but in most cases that's temporary for a couple of months. Also one more thing is the degree you study matters , arts degrees and similar irrespective of nationality or skin colour find it hard. In fact most times go to a retail store like Michael Kors, Zara , a lot of the people you see there have degrees but there arent a lot of jobs for those degrees. Honestly in the world of today without a STEM degree or plenty of experience getting a job is a challenge. |

ShyWhale:don't let anyone deceive you. The best place to leave on earth is Nigeria, but only if you have money. There is wide poverty right here in Nigeria, that's the reason Nigeria seems like hell on earth. But not to those who have the money. If you have the capital, come invest it in Nigeria, the market is here. Goodluck. |

Babyvet:Keep dreaming iya Nurse..... for your mind now, when professionals dey talk, you go dey feel fly abi, " I am a nurse in AMERIKA" nonsense. |
| Re: Should I Move To The UK Or Return To Nigeria? by Babyvet: 10:14pm On May 14, 2019 |
willy2000:Lol, you are very low achiever, you think being a nurse is big deal in America ? You better go figure your stay in Germany instead of wasting time here. |

Babyvet:Did they start that company to look after Nigerians? Why do we have this false sense of entitlement? How many jobs are Nigerian govt creating for Nigerian graduates? Did you not do your research before investing ££££ into foreign education? Not everybody will get that professional job after graduation even in Nigeria. |
| Re: Should I Move To The UK Or Return To Nigeria? by canadaman18: 10:16pm On May 14, 2019 |
Babyvet:Sorry I should have clarified my post is not to the OP but more in response to the other people on the thread who are complaining on the lack of jobs and opportunities in the west. Getting a job anywhere is hard and you gotta start from somewhere. I wish there was some kind of stat but I'm yet to meet anyone with STEM degrees and the skills to back it up who went unemployed for longer than a year. I do meet people operating taxis with medical degrees from other countries but that stems more from the degree not being recognized |

Nawa o Guys dey vex o. But on a serious note what if dollar depreciates to like 50 naira will Nigerians abroad cope? |
| Re: Should I Move To The UK Or Return To Nigeria? by Beautyaddy: 11:01pm On May 14, 2019 |
oluayebenz:lol!...keep wishing. What does Nigeria produce or invent that will make that your wish to come true ![]() Even when one naira was equivalent to about one dollar in the early sixties to seventies Nigerians still migrated to the US but mostly through student purposes...however, most of them returned back to Nigeria after studies because there were opportunities galore with jobs waiting for them. But now what we have is most people migrating to the US not necessary for school purposes but for better opportunities they are not getting in Nigeria. Even the students applying to go school abroad are mostly using the student visa as a route to hopefully get a foot in the door that after at least investing in some kind of education abroad it might help them to stay back and be offered job oppunities. |

canadaman18:I agree with everything you said (apart from your continued use of the adjective "menial" except this. No need to sugarcoat the pill. In most cases it takes a lot more than "a couple of months", for people to settle into their new lives with employment comparable to what they left back home, and not only for Nigerians. |

Well said. I think the problem with most Nigerians abroad is that they want to return but really dont know whr to start so they rather remain in that survival job and console themselves with i am doing it for my kids. If they had the opportunity to rewind their lives they wud hv stayed in Nigeria. In my opinion do whatever makes you happy cos u only hv one life to live and you dont want to live it in regret. I will rather be a king in my country than be a slave in oyinbo land. thewatcher2020: |

ysmd:I notice that most excuse offenders that are not admitting to the ongoing failed state of Nigeria are using the highlighted quote to console themselves. Question is how are people who are living and working abroad being enslaved? Are they being abused at work like some work places in Nigeria are allowed to get away with? Are they owed months upon months of salary like some work places in Nigeria do? Mind you most work places can get sued if the employees sense any form of discrimination of any form...even the illegal immigrants being employed in those jobs are not excepted from suing the employer for any type of abuse or discrimination. Does any job in Nigeria have unions or employees rights they way they have them in most western countries? |

Slavery in this context is not physical but psychological. When you see a qualified doctor or someone who earned really well back in Nigeria but now abroad driving uber then you will understand or work in factories. For someone who is professionally inclined can never be happy he just survives and regrets but they will not tell u. Beautyaddy: |
| Re: Should I Move To The UK Or Return To Nigeria? by Beautyaddy: 11:55pm On May 14, 2019 |
ysmd:A so-called qualified doctor from Nigeria that cannot pass the medical board exams in most of those western countries. You want to compare most if not all those people earning high incomes in Nigeria to the western countries when we all know that most people in Nigeria are getting those high paying jobs through connections and not necessary through earned merit. Keep living in denial. |
| Re: Should I Move To The UK Or Return To Nigeria? by ysmd: 1:28am On May 15, 2019 |
I agree with you , but not everyone in 9ja got their jobs with connection. I stay in Canada where the job market here is basically connection they call it referral. I spoke to a recruiter with one of the big 4 banks and she confirmed it . So it the same every where if you look closer . It might be worse in 9ja but the job market and connection is same. That why you see people scrambling for temp roles the FT roles is referral o. Beautyaddy: |

justwise:Lol! You're beginning to sound like a broken record on most education abroad thread I see you on. We all know that the fact that one studied/studies abroad doesn't mean the govt of the country promised or owe them jobs but stop trying to stifle the voices of people saying it as it is. Education abroad has become a strategic means of fuelling the economy for most countries, even the citizens decry this act. Doesn't hurt for people to get the word out on this. In the long run it's same message you and them are trying to pass across: don't expect anything cos truly they owe you nothing but want your money to fuel their economy. Leaves them aware of the likely consequences of whatever decision is made. |

Chidimizzle:Thread like this comes up here at lest once a year and we have people like you who will show up to lament how you paid so much in fees and nobody is giving you a job after graduation and when anybody tries to present opposing views insults started flying around. Many of you are so intolerant of alternative views and rather call names and level allegations only because I see things differently. |
