From his experience it has been difficult for him to secure any professional jobs. Plus he is there on a visa .

Nigerians pay way too much than they end up getting on the long term. The OP is not alone. Thousands of Nigerians are stuck like him but scared to admit.

When I’m chanced, I’m definitely going to make a post to bring to fore the senselessness of embarking on these evil mission where educational agents convince Nigerian Parents to part with thousands of dollars to go fund an economy where their children end up being aged caregivers and all sorts. They save to come ball in December and run back to continue from where they stopped. I hope only sane people with experience would comment under the post tho.

Most of these people don’t and can never get it. They think you’ve got some bourgeoisie mindset when in fact what you’re serving is basic free tip for useful minds to decipher.

You can only work as a cashier in Tesco or Walmart? Do you know that those companies run graduate programs in business and IT fields?

The high fees you paid does not come with job offer by the school or the foreign govt., you are paying for the knowledge and certificate just like in Nigeria.

I am a Nigerian in Germany with a German Masters degree. It's quite difficult to get professional jobs in Germany as an African as we are usually the last of the pack. The only luck I ever had was to get internships, internships that takes several months to get and usually only for short periods. The high percentage of Africans even with German Phds doing menial jobs is highly discouraging and depressing. Most are trapped in the race for survival and I can't imagine myself living life like them. I feel I could do better with my skills and education that spreads across Europe's top countries.

I made the decision to return to Nigeria, harness my skills and start up a processing company. At 25 and the sole breadwinner of an extended family, they are asking me to stay put, saying that the Nigerian environment is not good for business (I feel they are only scared of losing out on the goodies they get from me).

Also last year, the family introduced me to a female in the UK, talking about marriage to her. The said lady is a Nigerian within my age range, but born and raised in the UK. Though I have been to the UK severally to see her, I have made no commitments whatsoever as she is not the kind of lady I would marry all things being equal. She and the family have however given me a ultimatum to decide now.


What do you advice?

With the exception of canadian kids whose parents are in the top 5% , they've all worked this same menial jobs . The truth is you cant go somewhere new and instantly expect to be living large. Although I know its tough leaving your job as bank manager in nigeria and you have to start working as a security guard but in most cases that's temporary for a couple of months.

Also one more thing is the degree you study matters , arts degrees and similar irrespective of nationality or skin colour find it hard. In fact most times go to a retail store like Michael Kors, Zara , a lot of the people you see there have degrees but there arent a lot of jobs for those degrees. Honestly in the world of today without a STEM degree or plenty of experience getting a job is a challenge.

How many it companies or business are sponsoring Nigerians .Job sponsorship is very low right now . You must be one of a kind to get it now . In the US , Indians have claimed the IT market. Look at the visa bulletin for the US for 2018. Only about 495 Nigerians got employed preference visa, now compare that to the thousands of students who come into the US per year to study.

What does Nigeria produce or invent that will make that your wish to come true

Even when one naira was equivalent to about one dollar in the early sixties to seventies Nigerians still migrated to the US but mostly through student purposes...however, most of them returned back to Nigeria after studies because there were opportunities galore with jobs waiting for them.

But now what we have is most people migrating to the US not necessary for school purposes but for better opportunities they are not getting in Nigeria.

Even the students applying to go school abroad are mostly using the student visa as a route to hopefully get a foot in the door that after at least investing in some kind of education abroad it might help them to stay back and be offered job oppunities.

It’s insane to spend over $65,000 from your parents in Nigeria on tuition overseas in a country like Australia and you end up packing shi.it of older citizens and wash plates in restaurants while having some masters degree and be deceiving yourself that “it is just for the time being”.

Trust me, it is easier for you to convince a brick wall to submit to your superior argument on here than to convince some sluggards on this forum on the importance of dignity and sense in yourself. A living witness here, I NEVER EVER NEVER EVER DID NO DAMN MENIAL SHI.T WHEN I WENT ABROAD. All I had to do was scale my expenses for the entire year during my student visa and post-study visa, paid my rents 12 months upfront and got my allowances 12 months upfront (albeit little in comparison to what menial guys make). I got a decent paying contract job while on student visa within 3 months of stepping foot into the country.

I told myself before leaving Nigeria that ANY job that I can’t do in Nigeria, I will never do abroad. It’s really a personal decision which I think it’s sane but people here be thinking because you’re African, you must appreciate just “being” in the foreign country. Balderdash trash!

I think the problem with most Nigerians abroad is that they want to return but really dont know whr to start so they rather remain in that survival job and console themselves with i am doing it for my kids. If they had the opportunity to rewind their lives they wud hv stayed in Nigeria. In my opinion do whatever makes you happy cos u only hv one life to live and you dont want to live it in regret. I will rather be a king in my country than be a slave in oyinbo land.

Are they being abused at work like some work places in Nigeria are allowed to get away with?

Are they owed months upon months of salary like some work places in Nigeria do?

Mind you most work places can get sued if the employees sense any form of discrimination of any form...even the illegal immigrants being employed in those jobs are not excepted from suing the employer for any type of abuse or discrimination.

Does any job in Nigeria have unions or employees rights they way they have them in most western countries?

When you see a qualified doctor or someone who earned really well back in Nigeria but now abroad driving uber then you will understand or work in factories. For someone who is professionally inclined can never be happy he just survives and regrets but they will not tell u.

I am not one who usually gives advice, however, I would add my two cents to the discussion. First and foremost, you have to decide what career path you would like to take now that you have graduated with a Masters degree...either get into a career in your area of study or start your own business. But either part you choose requires hard work and dedication and you must be willing to put in the effort that is necessary to be successful.

After introspection, assuming you've been bitten by an "entrepreneurial bug" and you have the capital and want to start something for yourself, then go for it. You just have to make sure that you do your due diligence before you jump into any type of business venture either in Germany or in Nigeria or any other place for that matter. But if you decide to get into the corporate world in Germany using your educational qualification, then I advise that you learn the language and be very fluent in it assuming you don't already speak the language.

Nothing endears a visitor to his host more than the visitor's ability to communicate with the host in his language. I am saying this out of my personal experience when I went to China with a bunch of my white colleagues from work. Our Chinese hosts related more to me more than my coworkers. I learned Mandarin and was able to communicate with them. That simple gesture made their life much easier for the fact that they did not have to struggle to express themselves to us since a lot of them did not speak English that well. They saw me as a trusted ally and would tell me things that they could not and did not tell my other colleagues.

Moreover, you can be very successful where ever you are if you have the wherewithal and the opportunity to showcase it. So, don't assume that because other Nigerians you know are not able to pursue their career goal in their field of study in Germany or elsewhere in Europe that their fate would be your lot as well. Always remember, that "life is like a box of chocolate and you never know what you'll get" [Forest Gump]. You have to believe in yourself and your skill set and go for it...no venture no success! Bro I left Naija for Canada about 3 weeks ago and almost all the Nigerians I have met here do good jobs not menial jobs, nursing, accounting, management etc. I am sure I would write my exams and move up soon by his grace.

You should consider Canada really

I just left so let me update you before you rush back home and regret.

1. Kidnapping is now a very serious business in Nigeria, and you especially at risk if you just arrived the country. It's everywhere not just in the ND it's very rampant in Lagos, people lose money and sometimes their lives. I have several colleagues who fell to this recently.

2. Starting a business : Do you know how many agencies including legal and illegal ones that would come to try to milk you out of your initial profit that's supposed to make the business grow? A lost of companies are struggling to survive there because the government doesn't care. Not to mention exchange rate and importing problems(I hope you don't intend to import anything because that enough to make you regret your DECISION to move back)

3. I assume power, clean water, sanity, clean air, are some of the things you enjoy there In Germany.
Are you ready to start the usual grind of buying fuel, dealing with generator noise, dealing with all the uncertainties that come withliving in Naija,

4. Are you sure you have a back up, because it seems you don't as the major earner in the family. Because if that business fails and there are a lot of reasons why it might fail, you might be trapped there in Nigeria, with little or no resources to leave again.

If I was in your shoes, I would try to migrate to another country say the UK or Canada, Australia or the US. Start a life that can sustain you so even when you go back home to invest or start a business briefly, you have things to run back to if that fails.

Yesterday, I met two Nigerians in church here who own their own pharmacies in Canada and are faring well. You can also start your business in Germany(if possible or relocate to where you can) and when its established you set a branch up in Nigeria.

I have neighbors that are regretting coming back after school and finding it really difficult. One has a masters from Italy but is currently doing a 50k govt job.

Na wa oh. If he was still in Italy working full time, he can make this amount (gross) in a day. This country don cast finish. A big time scam

Lol! You're beginning to sound like a broken record on most education abroad thread I see you on. We all know that the fact that one studied/studies abroad doesn't mean the govt of the country promised or owe them jobs but stop trying to stifle the voices of people saying it as it is.

Education abroad has become a strategic means of fuelling the economy for most countries, even the citizens decry this act.

Doesn't hurt for people to get the word out on this. In the long run it's same message you and them are trying to pass across: don't expect anything cos truly they owe you nothing but want your money to fuel their economy. Leaves them aware of the likely consequences of whatever decision is made.
