Something just came to my mind, I don't know how helpful it would be. But if your Husband has a job or a business here to return back to after assisting you to settle down, then he can talk about it and make it clear he wouldn't be staying back.

Yes, i have several families like that approved. It's a PhD and will take 3 to 5yrs to complete. They can't stay apart for long.

Was the very first person to arrive there. Not based in Lagos so I passed the night with my brother that stays at Ajah. He advised we leave early to beat the traffic so we left as early 3 a.m. despite my 7 a.m. appointment time and we got there around 4 a.m. Suffice to say, the stress of the previous days journey from Port Harcourt coupled with getting little sleep wore me out before the time for my scheduled appointment. 7 a.m finally came and we were ushered in. I was interviewed by an African American lady, probably the "notorious" one I hear about on this thread. Something funny happened before it got to my turn, the guy in front of me tried to run away from her. He tried to skip the line and move to the line adjacent to ours that had a middle aged white man as VO. The VO (middle aged white man) caught him, got up and went to report him to the African American lady and she asked that the guy be sent back to her.

It got to my turn.

VO: Good morning, Pass me your passport and I-20

Me: Passed it to her and her eyes went to the estimated costs part of the I-20, she glanced at the I-20 for about a minute and started typing

VO: So how did you find out about this school?

Me: I was looking for schools that had research labs in....(she cuts me off)

VO: So you found it online?

Me: Yes.

VO: what kind of research would you be working on?

Me: Educational Technologies for developing countries. Most of Today's breakthrough in Educational Technology were designed and built for developed countries with reliable and adequate power supply, stable internet connection and a very educated populace in mind. These advances in educational technology while very impressive are sometimes too expensive or not effective in developing countries that still face challenges of erratic power supply, slow and unreliable internet connections and lack of technical support. I am interested in researching ways in which education technology can be built to work effectively in developing countries by taking the challenges already existing technologies face in such countries into consideration and researching solutions that can surmount those challenges. The part in italics is the first paragraph of my SOP. I did NOT say it to her exactly like that but what I said was something similar. I didn't memorize it, I just said it the best I could.

* he is currently working at Bleep and paid Bleep. We both agreed that it won't be easy for me to cope in the first few months, so he agreed to support me as he has always done since he knows this has been my dream even before we got married.
* we know he can't work over there that's why he won't be staying all through. He just want to be able help me settle, then return to Nigeria and be free to visit anytime he wants.
* my funding can take care of the three of us while he is with us.

your personal money or husband job is a much stronger position that my funding can take care, anyway

it is 50/50 . nobody can predict how it goes because your case is 100 percent subjective . One Vo /person might be ok with it another will not. So all you can do is prepare well and hope for the best

The fact that your husband wants to go with you and you have a little baby might actually work against you but you have no choice but to work with what you have and hope for the best . You might just meet a VO that will be awww cute baby , awww cute mother , awww even with new born wants to do a PHD , awww so nice . off you go . The only thing you can do is prepare well and present yourself well

However, my interview was straight forward. I believe filling your DS160 thoroughly and to highlight strong ties will go a long way.
For example, your husband’s job or business on his form etc...

Edited to add that, if your husband is going for F2, that means he plans to stay there during the course of your PhD. If he plans to just help you settle down and come back, that’s B1/B2.

Got all my rejection letters by March 2018. When I found out I was pregnant, I decided to stay back home while I learn skills in web development and apply again for my PhD. And now I am nursing my baby. Now I have gotten 3 admits, 1 reject and the last one still under review. How do I explain this academic/professional gap without shooting myself on the foot.
Also, the school I decided to attend was brought to my notice by the graduate recruiting officer of the department after seeing my GRE score at ets. he asked I should explore the department which I did and then I applied to the school after seeing that the research interest of some of the faculty members closely aligns with mine. Do you think it's wise I state that as how I came to know about the school?
I have been reading through to see if anyone has a case close to mine, but I haven't seen, hence my reason for typing this.
Please gurus in the house, I look forward to your advise. Thank you.

1. If your husband can leave his job to join you in US, it means that your husband doesn't actually need his current job. If he doesn't need his current job, it means that he can as well leave the job and migrate with u when u both enter US.

After all, u already admitted that your husband can also apply in the same school later on, an admission that you guys don't intend to come back. The VO is obviously going to read right through it n d pendulum could swing anyways. Understand the implications of your words especially to a VO.

2. You baby is 6 months now, the baby will be 9 months by d time u leave. Could d baby be placed in a daycare while u school? I know it is expensive.

3. The person who ask about where your husband works and how much he earns is not trying to belittle u. But I see that u answered with bleep company, and bleep salary.

If your husband is employed with some decent salary, and he can obtain a leave from his company for some months, then your case looks a lot more genuine.

4. But expecting your husband to come live with u for a year while hoping the VO will not figure out your immigrant intent is close to impossible.

In any case, women abandon their careers for their husbands too, I don't see why a man shouldn't do same for his wife and kid.

At this point, there is no going back. This is one of the case where prayer will come in handy. But try to see if your husband can obtain some sort of official leave from his current employer.

It's not easy. I really do wish you the very best. You are a strong woman.

Please, anyone who had or heard about a similar experience should please tell our sister. Hearing other people's experience can help calm her.

But I have some holes for the bolded part. How do you explain his absence from work for that long? Cos if he is going to help you settle, this is nothing short of 6 months (i.e to settle). Yes he agreed to help and support, but after settling what next?
Who is gonna be looking after the child will be the next question? In US, childcare is a big deal, and children below 12 in most states are not allowed to be left alone?
How do you plan to cater for the child while pursuing your program when your husband is back to Nigeria.

If you have childcare sorted, I will like to add however that it makes sense to say he will go back after he helped you settle. Then he can show a letter from where he works approving a leave of absence for some time to help you settle. If he is a business owner, you should have a plan on how the business is going to thrive the duration he is away.

I think you will be fine.

I've filled my form but no part of the form ask if I have kids or not, I only saw married or single, how else can I fill in ties in the form

True.
If you even tell a VO that you are leaving behind a 2 year old baby for a PHD program tat takes 3 to 5 years, they will think it weird. Even if you prove the father is capable of caring of the child, it might just be a person who is still traditional in his views about family life.

Moreover, when it comes to welfare of children, oyibo no de use am play at all.
I actually think they should go together as a family, and as advised by others, be succinct in her DS160, and also be prepared for the interview.
As well as have all documentation in place.

To the best of my knowledge, this is only for B cat visa and I think F2 holders.

Just asking, the US government have a place they note down on the i20 your estimated living expenses for a year. Did the school fully fund you alone or did they factor in your husband and baby? In other words, is it on paper that the school is going to fully support three of you, including health insurance? Or did you make an assumption or two?

That money is coming out of a Professor's grant or in some cases from the department. If all of you were offered such support through everything, you must either be a really good catch (and the VO may want to ask more questions about the school, your accomplishments, educational history and suchlike to gauge what potential they saw) or the school is just so wealthy that they don't mind.

If possible, do plan to include some personal savings or something. Just don't appear like all of you are going in empty handed. If not possible, prepare well and hope for the best. We may advise based on the little we know but as someone rightly said, these interviews are highly subjective.
