Governor Sanwo-Olu On Monthly Sanitation: We’ll Ask People Whether To Return It by ijustdey: 1:03am On Jun 01, 2019
Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Friday said his administration would go back to the people of the state on whether to return the monthly sanitation exercise.

Sanwo-Olu said this during a visit to the Olusosun dumpsite in Ojota area of the state, in company with his deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat.

The State Government had in November 2016 cancelled the monthly environmental sanitation exercise held every last Saturday of the month.

The government had said it was no longer appropriate to restrict movement of people for three hours in a mega city like Lagos, at a time they should be pursuing commercial and entrepreneurial activities.

Sanwo-Olu, however, said there was the need to seek the opinion of Lagosians again on the issue.

“We are going to ask Lagosians if they want us to return the three- hour monthly sanitation to ensure we have cleaner city.

“Though I know what my own views are, but we will still need to ask Lagosians,” he said.

Lagos has in the recent past faced challenges of environmental sanitation, forcing the governor to sign an executive order on Thursday, a day after he was sworn in, to tackle the problem, among others.

According to Sanwo-Olu, 70 per cent of refuse generated in Lagos is accommodated at the Olusosun dumpsite, and to create more jobs, the government will soon begin recycling the waste.

“Today, we came here to validate the executive order we signed. This is where we receive 70 per cent of the waste in Lagos.

“The facility is 28 years old, so we want to ensure it can receive waste for the next 23 years.

“We want to see how we can improve the road condition, just so that the compactor trucks can have a quicker turn around time.

“The building we are constructing at the entrance of the site will be used to train and retrain the staff and create jobs for more people.

“Half of the waste that comes here need not to be here, as they would have been recycled. Recycling is the way to go,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu said the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) would be collecting recyclable materials in order to create jobs.

“We came here to show people we are not armchair politicians. We are going to create jobs here for people who have nothing doing.

“There is money in waste if properly harnessed. We are going to take back the pride of Lagos,” he said. (NAN)

I get all this hyper the governor and his deputy are trying to do but :
The easiest thing sanwo and hanzat can do first is to domicile the maintenance and repair of roads to the local government. Instead of having the public works in Ojodu Berger going to all the local governments and lcdas to fiX roads, let there be a fully equipped public works department domiciled in every local government and lcda. Fund them properly and equip them and make them accountable. People in each local government can go to the local government to complain about bad roads and all to have them fixed. Eventually their capacity can be improved to road construction especially inner roads and drainage construction. As long as they perform using quality materials, it will lead to a big achievement in road construction and maintenance

Such a stupid, archaic practice.

You will have to pay more people to clean up the state more often.

You are not in a position to decide anything. Your Governor is sharing kerosene and Sniper and you have turned yourself to unsolicited adviser in Lagos.

Igboland needs sensible leadership, carry your advice there.

Something tells me Sanwo-olu will do wonders in the next 4 years, i see a man who will listen to his people.
And for the Sanitation exercise, i think it should be reintroduced cos it was so underrated during Ambode first year, if only he knew how effective the monthly sanitation was he wouldn't have stopped it.

You better be guided so you won't be confused and who are the people? So for a governor in office to make a decision you have to go through referendum or what undecided

I love your suggestion but the problem is quality of projects. Would the LG not compromise quality?

Secondly, the revenue available to LGs can only pay salaries and fix roads. Would they be able to do QUALITY projects with what is left?

Ambode asked LGs to provide roads they needed to fix and then fixed them himself. Problem was that when it was time to commission, he commissioned them himself and the LG guys got angry.

Monthly Sanitation exercise and 'restriction of movement' by a State government was deemed to be unlawful by a competent court.
Simple.

So are elections which restrict your movement. Why don't you roam around on election day?

Lagos refused to appeal the High Court judgment. If it was under Fashola, they would have appealed it. If it was appealed, the judgment would have been thrown away.

You are as stupid as this governor.

If they want a cleaner state they need to regularize the process of dealing with refuse.

Forcing people to stay at home and clean is something you would expect from a clueless military government.
