AngelicBeing: Anyways I live in Canada but would be moving south. I just wanted practical experiences like the gurus in the Canadian equivalent thread give. Most people commenting here arent permanently living in the states. Visiting a place is different from spending at least a year there. Info am seeking are things like mortgage price, insurance, cost of living in different places, best bank for a new commer, things to do and things to avoid. So far I haven't gotten much info. Pls contribute if you have ideas about these things in Texas, Nebraska, new Mexico , Nevada, California (page 1 gave a little more on this). Thank you all for your contributions. |

vickyehi: Please don’t expect much about this forum, a lot of people have not travelled out . Cost of living varies differently amongst states especially with those states you mentioned . As a nurse , you should look for somewhere that pay decent compared to cost of living . 3 Likes |

Nednwoko: You simply wasted your visa. One of my rules of thumb - never live in an area that is more than 40% black. Those areas are most likely to be poor, run down, no different from living in Nigeria, poor schools, high crime rate etc. it’s unfortunate but blacks in America are no better than blacks in Nigeria. 1 Like 1 Share |

vickyehi: Texas: Cost of living is low compared to the north east. You can get an excellent 4-bedroom 3000 sq ft home for under $300k depending on where you stay. Depending on your down payment, expect your mortgage to range from $1200 to about $3000 - if you really go big on a home. Public transportation is not the best in Houston but if you’ve got a car, you’re good. Best banks - I’m biased towards chase bank but you can also try Bank of America. For those who are new and still building credit, consider credit unions, they often are more lenient with loans and mortgages. Things to avoid - do not drink and drive!!! Never be late on any bills, the consequences are usually worse and far reaching. Be smart about credit card use... always pay down your cards to zero every month, it is pointless paying a bank fees for using their card. Stay out of trouble... Things to do - travel! Enjoy the beauty of the US, it’s varied culture, sites and food. 14 Likes |

vickyehi: Well some feel the other way round, you should have a good reason for moving south. It's always good to pay a visit. Why not travel down and have a feel |
Re: Cost Of Living In America - Things To Consider by vickyehi: 3:27am On Jun 09, 2019 |
jacksam: Reason is just for work. I visited but not these cities. I visited new York and went to queens, Brooklyn newyork and Binghamton. Way too many blacks(I was almost feeling racist for counting black people ) in Brooklyn and Queens. Things I noticed were that people were generally less trusting and accommodating. 1st experience in queens , a lady went into an eatery to ask them for their washroom and they refused to allow her use it. That wont happen In my friendly manitoba. My friend was surprised that superstore in canada gave me a dollar to put in my cart without any hassle. Meanwhile while in Binghamton (which has more whites because it's a small city), I bought stuff from Walmart and paid cash and the cashier girl was busy staring at the 50 dollar bill and me like we were from Mars. Smh.....naija girl like me , I stared right back at her........mtcheww So generally I haven't liked the feel from the few places I went but Canada get their own crase (professionally) so I wan separate from them ist before i know if i go file for divorce 2 Likes 1 Share |

vickyehi: As you are aware, the US is very diverse in all aspects of life. Individuals have different preferences in choosing a city/state to live. While some prefer lower cost cities, others go for white neighborhoods, proximity to family, employment opportunities, weather, safety, traffic and even taxes. Someone said that you are a Nurse, if that is right........I would prefer to apply as a travel Nurse, that would give you the opportunity to travel to different states/cities.....you get first hand experience of those places and can later decide where to settle down. 2 Likes |

Re: Cost Of Living In America - Things To Consider by Babyvet: 4:39am On Jun 09, 2019 |
vickyehi: Aren’t there nursing opportunities in Canada? The pay on the south is not good for nursing ( yes the cost of living may be lower but still) plus as a black person, it may probably not the best place to move too. |

Re: Cost Of Living In America - Things To Consider by Babyvet: 5:16am On Jun 09, 2019 |
vickyehi: Travel nursing does not pay good anymore , if you have family and needs benefits then forget about travel nursing. Which place to move too would highly depend on several factors like your residency status in the us( do you require job sponsorship), whether you have school aged children etc . |
Re: Cost Of Living In America - Things To Consider by vickyehi: 5:19am On Jun 09, 2019 |
Babyvet: There are nursing opportunities in Canada but sadly their licensing process for international nurses is cumbersome. The states pays more than Canada for nurses generally and you have a much broader scope of professional development and specialized fields with a shorter and more flexible(expensive sha) education. Difference is that the pay isn't structured nationwide in the states. So while nurse A is earning 23per hour as a new grad, nurse B in the same state is earning 27 or 30. Yea the racism is a big thing against blacks in the states but am not too worried about that. My reason is that there is a point tou grow and develop your skills to that NOBODY can deny your expertise. 1 Like 2 Shares |

Re: Cost Of Living In America - Things To Consider by Babyvet: 5:27am On Jun 09, 2019 |
vickyehi: Well if you have PR ( is somebody you?) then you can really go anywhere . Then your pretty much free , Texas is good place . Lots of foreign nurses and the BON is not too bad. California is also good but getting license can take long especially if you are foreign and it’s expensive . 1 Like 1 Share |

vickyehi: lol!....Didn't you just move to Canada last year? Anyway, so far Texas is one of those States in the US where the pay for RN's is very good and the cost of living is relatively cheap. So you'll get more with your earning as an RN as well as enjoy with the cost of living expenses. 2 Likes 1 Share |

TWoods:wow. 300k USD is like 398k Canadian dollars. A house that huge will be sold for around 850k to 1million Canadian dollars (640k to 753k USD) in the Texas of the North (Alberta). My cousins in Atlanta have been putting pressure on me to move to Atlanta using a TN visa. My profession and that of my wife also pays more in the states than the true north. It's very tempting to move south. 1 Like 2 Shares |

Babyvet:Nurses opportunities are not so much in Canada. i know some nurses in Calgary that have to work like 3 places to get a total of 40hrs per week. I dont know what the pay is like in US for nurses, but in Calgary, starting pay for nurses in Alberta health service is like $36 Cad per hour which is like $27 USD and they kind of cap in the mid $40 Cad. The wages could be worse in a bigger city like Toronto. However if nurses can move to smaller towns, they might get better hours and work life balance. There are lots of Canadian nurses working in the state due to better pay and more oportunities for specialization. when trump was causing trouble about two years ago. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cbc.ca/amp/1.4026554 One of my previous landlady is a nurse practitioner that travels to Indian reserves in northern Alberta to work. I once saw her payslip and she doesn't make up to 100k a year (salary plus OT). She has like 30 years of experience. She also worked in the US for 15 years. I expected her to be making more but oh well. 1 Like 2 Shares |

salford: Yes, that's about the same average rate for RN's too in the US. However, NP in specialties fields tends to make more in the US...more like in the 100k and above and increase as their years of experience increases. |

TWoods: American blacks are worse than Nigerians. They are mostly damaged folks with lots of emotional issues. Half the women grew up with drug addict moms and their fathers are away in prison. I dated a teacher who was selling crack to her students and she almost destroyed my life when she knew I worked too job and kept some money away from her. I’m glad she’s doing time in prison now, useless woman. And for the guy trying to relocate to America, do your research properly and try avoid California. You are better off in Oklahoma, Texas, or Oregon. These states are diverse and have a lot of work for mixed races. California is good but it’s competing with NY when it comes to expensiveness. Or you will end up spending all your funds on rent and gas to move around. And too many crack head with guns in their back pack. Nevertheless, America is one of the best place to live once you become established. There are gated communities in California with the best houses and most decent and educated folks around. America is just too many countries in one country. Some neighborhood are worse than your Ajegunle while some will make Lekki and Dubai look like glorified slum. God bless America and Niaja 5 Likes 3 Shares |

salford: Canada isn’t really a rich country, the real money is in the us. Health care is a gold mine in the us, especially in states like Texas and California. Guess that’s why they just want the health care reform bill killed and Trump is making sure it dies. How can I get a bill of $12,000 from my primary and secondary health insurance for a common health challenge that you will only treat with just 5k in Nigeria. Truth is, if I’d done my research I’d have rather study medicine before ever traveling to the us instead of going into education. I know a Nigerian lady who is a surgeon and she earns $300k yearly, although she’s still paying off her student loan. |

KendrickAyomide: Lesser chances of being shot ?. The uneducated whites won't hunt your black arse down for trying to " dilute " their " good " neighbourhood ?. How can you have a peace of mind around people who will attack you with little or no provocation because of your skin colour ?. Does that nothave the same effect as being around gangbangers? 11 Likes |

salford: Good to know, in the US, licensing is less restrictive .We all have something called compact license which is multi - state licensure . It’s allows for nurses to practice in certain states without applying for a new license. |
