If someone objects to the way you have greeted or responded to his or her greeting, simply apologize and move on. Life's too short to be spent on frivolities.
Qed. All that drama over inconsequential issues.

Op instead of you to address an uncouth woman you're here addressing the man's choice of response to her greetings. Why didn't the useless lady in question just make her point and walk away. And for heaven's sake which police man arrested that man for answering her greeting with my dear. Like what was the charge? What exactly was he arrested for?

Nigerians please let's stop encouraging the rot in our system. If she felt slighted by his response to her greetings she should have just addressed it and not gone to drag his shirt.

Well I just guess this story didn't happen

Then you have lost the meaning of the word .

a beloved person; used as terms of endearment

Your Neighbour's wife is Dear to you?

Say it again.
“my dear ” is informal, when used in such context one shouldn't be wrong,if we are to go by English language technicality

How?
By the way I am a lady.
oh sorry I've edited it.

I don't think anyman will allow another man to call his wife my dear. Even in the civilised country especially USA if you address a woman or lady as "my dear" she will correct you instantly that she's married or has a boyfriend depending on which of them she has. Kindly check out the meaning of "dear" you will see something like "regarded with deep affection" now add "my" to it as a determiner or adjective.

When writing a formal letter do you use dear or not?
The madam or sir you write such letter to are they beloved persons to you?

Do you say My Dear or Dear Sir?

Its a formal greeting in that case...not in form or endearment.

I know the meaning of the word.
I personally see nothing wrong with the word.
But if the person does not like the word.I would respect the choice of such person.
You have lectured me today.

I say both.
Dear sir ma or my dear.
Then why say dear is for beloved people only?

The safest way in life is to mind your business and face your issues. Just learn to live a peaceable life. You should not act if you need only speak. You should not speak when a smile is all that is necessary. You need not smile when a courteous nod will do. Be a mystery to people. Be an unopened book longing to be read.

Dear means something Dear to you.
"My Dear" means someone Dear to you.

Common, even whites dont use it otherwise.

So how come they use 'Dear Sir/Madam' on official letters?

I have known the meaning of the word dear since I was a child so do not try to insult me.
It is one of the words I am very familliar with and I tend to use it often with no strings attached to it.
Whoever chooses to misinterpret definitely has issues that word can never put me in trouble. If you don't like my usage of the word to you just tell me simple and I would stopcalling you that.

I agree with the writer, most times people use it to address someone they feel is beneath them. By age or whatever category they deem fit.

How many of the supposed educated people would respond to our MDs with "my dear". I bet none. That part of your brain that is wired to say dear will switch off and use Sir/Madam.

I really do not take it seriously, but I have issues with people using unnecessary endearments for me. Especially people of the opposite sex who I share no BOND with. I had this one that kept calling me sweetness. Who is your sweetness? undecided

At work, I tell the junior staff, don't call me aunty, sister...call me by my first name. Feel free to add a Miss if you want.

I address people by their first names. Except my shugar...
Good evening poco my sweetness, how's your day going sweetheart?
