When a government refuses to beef up security around its borders, people will continue to take advantage of their porous borders; it is a source of income for them. That includes the northern borders through which murderers called fulani herdsmen with their kith and kin flood this country and cause mayhem. Some of them even possess our national ID cards and voters cards while some legitimate Southern citizens are unable to get theirs.

Reading between the lines, what Dangote is really complaining about is how Benin’s porous borders are undermining his monopolies. Of course, he doesn’t bother to mention how the very tariffs and import bans on which he grows fat create the incentives for the smuggling which undermine them, by making it a lot more profitable to bribe customs officials to let “banned” goods through.

I am no fan of corruption in general, but speaking from a purely economic viewpoint, the rampant smuggling Dangote is moaning about is a net benefit for the welfare of ordinary Nigerians. If it wasn’t, there would have been no need for the trade restrictions in the first place, as there are no externalities here to consider.
As you once said, that people who champion protectionism forget that one of the prime benefits of free trade is cheap goods and services from other countries.

What Nigerians have been deprived of, is what the Beninoise are enjoying. They have also become a re-export hub by simply exploiting Nigeria's senseless protectionism that has failed so clearly in industrialising the economy.

If we make the prices of our locally manufactured goods competitive or lower than the prices of smuggled goods, then Nigerians would demand more locally manufactured goods and smuggling would die a natural death. Let's apply the simple laws of demand, supply and price.

Dangote is right...using smuggled goods has multiple ill effects to the economy of a country. Few that I can think of are: Adverse effect on local market- the economic transaction of local markets will decline as more people would prefer smuggled goods as they are cheaper. Thus destroying competition and growth in economy.
I don't agree with Dangote. Smuggled goods can only come in when they are cheaper and better than locally made goods. Nigerians don't have good pricing policy. Prices of locally made goods are too expensive. The activities of middle men is not helping. If a bag of locally made rice cost 15k, imported rice that cost much less will find it's way in.

Let's find ways to produce our goods and make them as cheap as possible, no one will bother to import. Afterall, how did Benin Republic produce theirs very cheap that it gets our patronage?

If you need truth in Nigeria on business growth, pls call Mr Dagote.we Nigerians always love to kill truth and the Govt, both past and present have failed to confront this truth on our borders(North and South).
Why should we continue 'father Christmas' affairs while Nigerians youth remain unemployed? Imagine the dearth of our Textiles industries-the Aswani, the Atlas of this world etc was strangulated through borders criminal importation if textile s inferior goods.when you see the President of Benin Republic in Nigeria, his mission is to beg the govt of the day to continue open-border policy,no more no less.we need Trump Model to allow Nigerians get back what they have lost for decades.Ask Mexico and China the 'Trumpism' effects as the heat is real.

A man that gets all the import waivers from government to gain undue advantage over others? can we even have a viable manufacturing sector without power (electricity)? The man is simply not saying the truth. All he does is repackaging, not production.

Please what is FTA?
The African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA), signed by 44 African countries in Kigali, Rwanda, in March 2018, is meant to create a tariff-free continent that can grow local businesses, boost intra-African trade, rev up industrialization and create jobs.

The agreement creates a single continental market for goods and services as well as a customs union with free movement of capital and business travellers. Countries joining AfCFTA must commit to removing tariffs on at least 90% of the goods they produce.

If all 55 African countries join a free trade area, it will be the world’s largest by number of countries, covering more than 1.2 billion people and a combined GDP of $2.5 trillion, according to the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA).

U are right but Naija and Benin Republic border is beyond human comprehension. Just visit Tokpa, the place is just like Amukoko and Mosafejo. Wetin I mean be say the two people Naija and Benin don enter themselves too much, there's nothing demarcating them. Your glo line works in Benin Republican without roaming. In Tokpa one can trek to Benin Republic side and buy bread and bean for lunch and come back to Naija side.
You guys have not been to the northern border of Nigeria that's why you say all these things.

Northern Nigeria has a far far wider border than Southern Nigeria.
Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, Jigawa, Bauchi, Yobe & Borno all share boundary with Niger & Chad republics.

In these places, u don't even know when u have crossed the border because everyone speaks Hausa or Kanuri, looks alike, talk the same. Absolutely no restrictions.

If not for Nigeria poverty would kill the entire citizenry of Benin, they practically feed off the Nigerisn economy. It's just unfortunate that our political leaders are more interested in stealing than governance.
Hahaha, Bro it makes no difference, do u know why?

Cos if Benin people are too hungry and poor, they will all still pack their loads and land on Nigeria to stay as immigrants just as we have millions of Niger republic people all over Nigeria. A prosperous neighbour is a good thing to have. Only that your neighbour shouldn't prosper at your expense. Well, neither should u prosper and your neighbour suffers. At worse make una share am 50/50.

Shut up!

Can't the government take satellite images of the border and put up adequate infrastructure necessary? Can't they employ more immigration and customs officers to help beef up security? Wise up abeg
All these people will still end up collecting bribes and smuggling continues, not until these custom officers start getting incarcerated or executed, smuggling will never stop.

It boils down to the same thing. We should just produce quality and affordable goods and importation will minimize. Nigerians are too greedy. Why should imported rice after all the duties paid still cheaper than locally produced rice?

Uwc! Although Nigeria is not signing the agreement, the challenge we have is with Neighbour countries who are party to such agreements.
Our porous borders makes us highly susceptible to the inflow of goods from such countries thereby crippling our manufacturing base as a nation. This would lead to conversion of manufacturing sector of the economy into sales outlets for European and Asian manufacturers who would end up becoming the top beneficiaries of the agreement.
