Only if you guys know that the custom personnel have become big-time smugglers themselves!

The problem with this country is us: the people. We only have good laws and policies; there are no good people to enforce them. We have given rat the duty of securing our meat-full pots. It has been given all the opportunity it needs to cart our meets away. it just doesn't need to bother about who out there might be coming.

How is he RIGHT...??
He just insulted BENIN, if he actually uttered that.
How many MEGA WATTS of power does Nigeria generate..??
Nothing KILLS a NATION faster than DARKNESS.
DARKNESS to multinationals. DARKNESS to staff of manufacturing companies at home too.
No power to steer the machines.
NO COUNTRY'S manufacturing sector survives on GENERATORS.
Most AIRPORTS abroad will power Nigeria better..

How Nigerians are easily distracted from the real problem still beats me. Until we have 24/7 power, most Nigerians will never be able to afford any quality product produced here.

Why are the smuggled goods cheaper?

Why are those from Benin republic not coming to Nigeria to smuggle goods?

...And if they do, would the goods become cheaper in their country when it cost an arm and a leg here?

Lagos – Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has berated the volume of smuggled goods coming into Nigeria through the Republic of Benin.

Dangote spoke at a stakeholders’ session in Lagos between the private sector and the Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele.

He said smuggling activities from the Benin Republic route is killing manufacturing in Nigeria.

His words: “Smuggling is killing Nigeria and most of these smuggled goods come from the Benin Republic. There is no country that can survive with Benin Republic as a neighbour.

in my small way, I think it would have been right to say no country can survive with person like Dangote as a business man. Whom will not allow any other cement factory to grow, who also is given aid by the government to build refinery while the Gov itself does not have one. And may other things.

Even the smuggled goods like rice and textiles through the landlocked northern neighbours into Nigeria still come through Benin access to the sea.

I mentioned Benin instead of Cameroun and Togo because rice exports figures released by Thailand show that Benin is a major destination of its exports and we know the population of Benin cannot support such quantities.

Dangote is saying poo

What is killing manufacturing in Nigeria are the unnecessarily high cost of credit, poor infrastructure and the tendency of manufacturers here to focus on areas the country has no comparative advantage.

Hong Kong has virtually no import duty on goods and for decades it was a powerhouse in manufacturing, exporting billions of dollars worth of good. The same with Singapore. Imports therefore isn't what's decimating Nigerian manufacturing.

The simply question is why are they smuggling ? If we have constant power for manufacturing activities and optimize the factors of production, our products should come out cheaper than those smuggled, thus making smuggling non lucrative. Smuggling is all about buying cheap and selling high. Yes Dangote would want ban on the importation of all the items he manufactures,so that he can sell at any price within the Nigerian market ,thus killing consumers. How many of Dangote's products are exported to Benin Republic? Sure non, because the cost of his products are not competitive, he just survives under government protection and ripping off Nigerian consumers.

dangote is wrong ,
what dangote should have said is that no unserious country with irresponsible leadership can survive with republic of benin as her neighbor.
lets not forget that the sea port is the only thing benin has that can generate income for her and she is right next to the biggest black nation in the world and the biggest market in africa , please what do you expect their leaders to do ?
of course they have to take advantage of the location to get what they need and want , it is up to the nigeria government to find a way of stopping the rubbish and we should stop blaming benin .
when idiagbon was in power , noone dared import contraband items . that is responsible leadership

Are you ok, bro.
Are u saying that there are good and bad smuggling?

Is there any kind of smuggling activities that do not affect a country negatively?

Northern States are smuggling arms and ammunition through Niger and Chad and you don't think that one will also affect the economy of Nigeria adversely? Ok...continue.

U are right but Naija and Benin Republic border is beyond human comprehension. Just visit Tokpa, the place is just like Amukoko and Mosafejo. Wetin I mean be say the two people Naija and Benin don enter themselves too much, there's nothing demarcating them. Your glo line works in Benin Republican without roaming. In Tokpa one can trek to Benin Republic side and buy bread and bean for lunch and come back to Naija side.

Dangote is right...using smuggled goods has multiple ill effects to the economy of a country. Few that I can think of are: Adverse effect on local market- the economic transaction of local markets will decline as more people would prefer smuggled goods as they are cheaper. Thus destroying competition and growth in economy.
Why then are smuggled goods cheaper?
The government should review its policies too.
