When a government refuses to beef up security around its borders, people will continue to take advantage of their porous borders; it is a source of income for them. That includes the northern borders through which murderers called fulani herdsmen with their kith and kin flood this country and cause mayhem. Some of them even possess our national ID cards and voters cards while some legitimate Southern citizens are unable to get theirs.

That is why during election you will be seeing marvelous numbers for the north when Niger governors even came to campaign with Buhari. What is being done to open up our sea ports and make the existing one more efficient?

Is it disturbing only him or disturbing our local manufacturers?
Why can't you guys be reasonable for once.
Now tell me how it is affecting Dangote?
Is it in cement?fruit juice production or flour ?

You forget some of your relative involved in this business are affected one way or the other or you one of those who smuggle goods into the country?

And other country richest men can handle their delivery cargo truck from killing her citizen any how on the road, except a country Name Nigeria where trucks own by Dangote the richest Nigerian kills thousands of Nigeria on the road through the reckless driving of his delivery trucks drivers and his doing nothing about it. Is only in Nigerian the trucks of the richest man Dangote park by the roads at Benin and Delta and sometimes block the roads entire thereby causing traffic and the same man whom wishes Nigerians good by stopping smuggling goods is not doing anything to clear his trucks from the roads. No country survived with kind of Dangote trucks parking any how and killing as they wish.

I don't support smuggling. And I believe strengthening our borders contribute more to enforcing our territorial integrity in many ways, especially security.

(Now enough of the grammar) But the truth is that if you produce something in-house and others prefer getting same stuff externally, it means your product lacks what people crave. This may include price, quality, or dexterity.

Let the borders be fixed, but our produce also needs to display competitive edge over these "smuggled" products.

Smuggling thrives due to differences in currency values n invariably price rates,I use to assume that currency values is strictly a matter of economy but now I realize it's more of political manouvering, let me make a foolish suggestion, why can't there be a system of global unified currency value such that the different currencies of the world would have same exchange rate so that the various countries will have to compete base on their abilities,I think this will help to curb immigration n smuggling, can anyone with sound knowledge of economics/politics proof why/how this will not work?.

Dangote is right...using smuggled goods has multiple ill effects to the economy of a country. Few that I can think of are: Adverse effect on local market- the economic transaction of local markets will decline as more people would prefer smuggled goods as they are cheaper. Thus destroying competition and growth in economy.
the Nigerian government is not helping the local manufacturers and the local market. they will make importation illegal for ordinary citizens and legal for few individuals

Blame your country and your greedy rich self. You've bought over the government and you collaborate with corrupt government officials to give you unnecessary tax breaks. You are always getting tax waivers! Plus Billions of cash in subsidized dollar!. So, you basically evade taxes but still hike the price of your produce.

You produce spaghetti and hike the price.
You produce sugar and hike the price.
You bring rice and hike the price.

But these commodities are dirt cheap in Benin republic. And you think people can't get in at cheaper price somewhere else nearby? The law of economics doesn't say so. People would do whatever it takes to buy something at cheaper price.

In addition to that, your corrupt government hikes the cost of clearing goods at the ports, plus it takes 1 month to clear a container at our ports. Whereas, clearing cost is again dirt cheap in Benin republic and it takes a day or two to clear anything in Benin ports!.

Dangote is one of the main reason for smuggling in Nigeria.

With due respect sir, I disagree with you. I know that with your experience as a private investor in this country, you certainly have fought many economic battles and won. You also know that if by accident you become the President of this country today or let's say Nigeria become part of Dangote Conglomerate, Benin Republic will not dear 5%of what they are doing to Nigeria.

You know the truth and what can be done to stop the continuous economic war that Benin Republic has declared against Nigeria and but the leadership has not been will to confront the challenge. Please Mr.president the truth,, peace comes after war, if we don't face Benin Republic on this economic war, we will remain defeated in our fight against importation of banned goods. Fight Benin Republic, then after your victory, make peace.

But what do we know anyways, I have not seen much forward thinking and planning towards meeting these oncoming challenges
*forward thinking* You got it right!
Thumbs up to you.
The government is joking... Competition with foreign products will become fierce soon and our local industries might succumb to the pressure of foreign products. We'll end up having more sales outlet for foreign goods...

Fake businessman.

Lack of electricity n lack if mining licenses to mine for manufacturing components(raw materials) is the only thing destroying manufacturing in Nigeria.

Cost of production in Nigeria is far far higher than cost of those smuggled materials, this is the problem

Dangote was right in his assertions but the real problem is not just about porous borders but about what makes the borders porous. Corruption is still the culprit here. There are customs commands everywhere Nigeria shares a border with another country. How are those goods smuggled into the country without the knowledge of those customs officers?
Also, Dangote himself is part of the problems. Ghanaian government rejected a price of N1,800 for a bag of Dangote Cement as at the time it was sold locally for about N2,600. He finally settled for N1,500.
How come it is cheaper out there than Nigeria where it is manufactured?
He kills any company that dares venture into cement production to continue his dominance in the industry.

The battle between Dangote and BOA is a case in point. Despite BOA being owned by a fellow Hausa man. The guy was taken to court several times. His properties were destroyed several times by agents of Dangote.
We need a president like Durante of Philipine to take on those capitalists like Dangote.

Until the needed reforms are made at Nigeria's clogged ports and the multiple taxations and corruption that combine to considerably escalate the cost of importation, I'm fully in support of smuggling. It sure helps the consumer market. It is not the masses that disfavor smuggling, cos we all want cheaper, better quality imports. It is wealthy men like Dangote who do.
