If words determine how you act, you aren't different from robots with pre-installed instructions. Words become powerless and useless if I chose not to respond or act. Learn to ignore and overlook, you will discover that calling a crocodile 'lizard' changes nothing. |

First of all, we need to understand the meaning of the word "dear" before doing any analysis on who is right or wrong in this instance. As a noun, "dear" is used as an affectionate or friendly form of address and as an adjective, it connotes deep affection and used when cherished by someone. "My dear" is usually used for and by people who are closer. It is a term of endearment - someone who is dear to you. Now, if the greeter [woman] felt slighted because she felt that she was not that close to the man to elicit such an endearing response, that would be a different issue. I can see her point, although I do not agree with her dramatic reaction to such minutiae. However, if her overreaction was simply based on the fact that she's of the belief that the word is used to address someone that you feel is below you like in some parts of Nigeria-as alluded to by the writer- then that's arrant nonsense. The word "my dear" means what it means regardless of what meaning different parts of the country try to assign to it. So, for the woman to react in the manner that she did was just over the top. In my opinion, there are some underlying issues here that would make a reasonable person react in like manner. Her best cause of action would have been after she requested that the man either change or correct his response, [which I think is too damn silly] is to make it a point not to greet him again from then onward. 6 Likes 1 Share |

Reference: This post of yours has made my day. Nice. People usually take you for granted only when they have sized you up. You can never be sized up by people when you are mysterious to them. |

Op, I feel you o. People have batsrardized the endearment "dear" or "my dear". They basically use it for people they feel is beneath them except of course if friends mutually use it. A woman once told me she greeted another woman politely with a good afternoon and the other woman responded with good afternoon, dear. Something about that didn't sit well with her but she swallowed it. On her way out, she said she deliberately said goodbye, dear. And the woman seemed so shocked and disrespected. So I think it's better to save the word for your loved ones. 3 Likes 1 Share |

Truth be told Most ladies use the term "my dear" to belittle" others. At least I have asked them. You use "my dear" for me and won't use it for my younger sister that is richer than both of us. Can you use "my dear" for your boss,? Hell no Well, to stop that rubbish, I started using "my dear" for her too. 1 Like |

incogni2o:The word "dear" is a polite word tho. https://www.vocabulary.com/dictionary/dear Some people can interpret "my dear" into another thing, some a way of belittling them like "take this my dear boy". Well to avoid unnecessary hullabaloo, one should not use it for someone he/she is not close to. 1 Like |
