If words determine how you act, you aren't different from robots with pre-installed instructions.

Words become powerless and useless if I chose not to respond or act.

Learn to ignore and overlook, you will discover that calling a crocodile 'lizard' changes nothing.

Re: How The Phrase ‘my Dear’ Can Put You In Trouble by Nobody: 7:36pm On Jun 09, 2019
First of all, we need to understand the meaning of the word "dear" before doing any analysis on who is right or wrong in this instance. As a noun, "dear" is used as an affectionate or friendly form of address and as an adjective, it connotes deep affection and used when cherished by someone. "My dear" is usually used for and by people who are closer. It is a term of endearment - someone who is dear to you.

Now, if the greeter [woman] felt slighted because she felt that she was not that close to the man to elicit such an endearing response, that would be a different issue. I can see her point, although I do not agree with her dramatic reaction to such minutiae. However, if her overreaction was simply based on the fact that she's of the belief that the word is used to address someone that you feel is below you like in some parts of Nigeria-as alluded to by the writer- then that's arrant nonsense.

The word "my dear" means what it means regardless of what meaning different parts of the country try to assign to it. So, for the woman to react in the manner that she did was just over the top. In my opinion, there are some underlying issues here that would make a reasonable person react in like manner. Her best cause of action would have been after she requested that the man either change or correct his response, [which I think is too damn silly] is to make it a point not to greet him again from then onward.

Poverty stricken neighbours in a poor neighbourhood.

Make money and nonsense would stop. You would tell your neighbour's wife 'how are you my dear' in the presence of her husband and he would be the one to answer "We are fine sir".

Money stops nonsense.

The safest way in life is to mind your business and face your issues. Just learn to live a peaceable life. You should not act if you need only speak. You should not speak when a smile is all that is necessary. You need not smile when a courteous nod will do. Be a mystery to people. Be an unopened book longing to be read.

This post of yours has made my day. Nice.
People usually take you for granted only when they have sized you up. You can never be sized up by people when you are mysterious to them.

I agree with the writer, most times people use it to address someone they feel is beneath them. By age or whatever category they deem fit.

How many of the supposed educated people would respond to our MDs with "my dear". I bet none. That part of your brain that is wired to say dear will switch off and use Sir/Madam.

I really do not take it seriously, but I have issues with people using unnecessary endearments for me. Especially people of the opposite sex who I share no BOND with. I had this one that kept calling me sweetness. Who is your sweetness? undecided

At work, I tell the junior staff, don't call me aunty, sister...call me by my first name. Feel free to add a Miss if you want.

I address people by their first names. Except my shugar...

So you get sugar all this while and u didnt tell me? When I had already planned our trad outfit and my wedding suit..Mscheww.

The woman is sure spoiling for a fight before. This is more than meet the eyes fight. She craftly used the greeting as platform to start issues.

Op, I feel you o. People have batsrardized the endearment "dear" or "my dear". They basically use it for people they feel is beneath them except of course if friends mutually use it.

A woman once told me she greeted another woman politely with a good afternoon and the other woman responded with good afternoon, dear. Something about that didn't sit well with her but she swallowed it. On her way out, she said she deliberately said goodbye, dear. And the woman seemed so shocked and disrespected. So I think it's better to save the word for your loved ones.

I have known the meaning of the word dear since I was a child so do not try to insult me.
It is one of the words I am very familliar with and I tend to use it often with no strings attached to it.
Whoever chooses to misinterpret definitely has issues that word can never put me in trouble. If you don't like my usage of the word to you just tell me simple and I would stopcalling you that.

Same thing as telling someone You are a crazy dude

Crazy passes different connotations to different people.

Me feeling offended in the word is due to my understanding of it.

In summary You calling someone "my Sweetheart " means different things. Its up to you to look before you leap.

Truth be told

Most ladies use the term "my dear" to belittle" others. At least I have asked them.

You use "my dear" for me and won't use it for my younger sister that is richer than both of us.
Can you use "my dear" for your boss,? Hell no

Well, to stop that rubbish, I started using "my dear" for her too.

Dear means something Dear to you.
"My Dear" means someone Dear to you.

Common, even whites dont use it otherwise.
The word "dear" is a polite word tho.

https://www.vocabulary.com/dictionary/dear

Some people can interpret "my dear" into another thing, some a way of belittling them like "take this my dear boy". Well to avoid unnecessary hullabaloo, one should not use it for someone he/she is not close to.
