A Nigerian man has vouched for traditional bone setters whom he says saved his limbs to after a western medical personnel recommended amputation.

This was after a Twitter user wanted against patronizing traditional bone setters due to a damage one allegedly did to a patient.

The Twitter user wrote:

Stop visiting traditional bone setters!!!

Distal fibular fracture that could have been easily managed turned to a wet gangrene. Now the leg would be amputated

In response, the man wrote:

Well, I owe my limbs to a traditional bone doctor. In 2001 I had a bad fracture on my left leg. A western medical personnel recommended amputation but a traditional bone setter fixed the bones and I was able to walk again in exactly 1 month and 26 days (May 1 - June 26).

Now I walk normally, play football and even completed a rigorous military training without incident. If I hadn't visited that traditional bone setter, I would've been an amputee, needing crutches, wheelchair or a prosthetic limb to move. A traditional bone setter saved my limb.

There are many more like me, saved by traditional bone setters when western medical practitioners couldn't help or even repaired a bad job by doctors. I've seen and heard many testimonies. Traditional bone setters really do help especially in areas where there are no hospitals.

There are quacks among the traditional bone setters the same way there are quacks among medical practitioners. The wrongdoings of these quacks do not mean the good ones should not be patronized.

Even with orthopedists, things often go wrong. I have a friend who fell and broke his right hand. He's had 3 surgeries and metal plates fixed but as at the last time I saw him the hand still wasn't okay. He's had several complications. It's been over 9 months now.

I personally believe if he had visited a good traditional bone setter by now his hand would have been almost as good as new.

I don't have the facts so I won't compare or say which is better. I won't knock anyone. There are good traditional bone setters who do a fantastic job and there are orthopedists who are also really amazing at their jobs and are saving lives.

The mistakes of some should not warrant a boycott. Everyday patients die in hospitals yet we don't ask people to boycott hospitals. Surgeons make mistakes yet we don't advocate for a blanket ban on surgeries.

Traditional bone setters are good but not all of them.

There's a guy in my department who got a fractured leg whilst playing a football match, and he spent 3 months and thereabout in the care of traditional bone setters. The poor guy just wasted his time. his leg got worse, and it later had to be amputated.

His fracture wasn't as serious. If he had visited a medical professional, he wouldn't have had such a bad fate.

BTW, an uncle of mine is a traditional bone setter, and I can confidently tell you that he's an aṣṣhole. He has been destroying poor people's bones. My uncle no Sabi work at all. People give reports on his incompetency, and he was once arrested over negligence by the family of a patient under his care.

Good for him. But I've read a story here how a boy's leg was damaged by bone setter. Local or foreign, it depends on how good the doctor is

They are the best.

I can bear witness to an old university mate of mine during our undergrads.

He was to have his left leg amputated until his peeps insisted on trado.

The rest as they say is history.

something similar happened to my friend, tinzo during the first semester of our final year in futo back then, Fibular broke into two, was held by just flesh, very scary sight.
was saved by these traditional bone setters, it took so long, 3,4 months for him to finally regain use of the leg.

The surprising thing was that the baskat was still lashing babes with the broken leg.

The problem with all these is that there is no research to prove veracity of the traditional bone setters claim.

There is also no uniform benchmark or standards for who can be described as a 'traditional bone setter' or what are the universal equipment/tools employed in the TBS practice.

If that is handled well, with evidence-based and verifiable research to boot, we would know its strengths and limitations - and also be able to export our traditional techniques to the world.

All these claims I'm reading here right now are more like who can 'shout' more 'convincingly'.

Until questionnaires are filled and biostatistics done, it wouldn't be more than some cacophony before the expectant intellectual public.

Forget what it seems. No two illnesses are exactly the same. What works or worked for A may be markedly different from what would work with B.

Four people can come with orthopaedic issues: A may have co-morbid diabetes while B doesn't have diabetes but has overwhelming sepsis. C may just have a simple fracture of the femur while D has comminuted fracture of the thigh with hypertension and chronic kidney injury. No 'traditional bone setter' can treat ALL FOUR OF THEM: A, B C & D under the same roof with 100% success in 4 of them. Impossible. That's why we need statistics.

How to resolve it is easy. Just to do what has been written above. Let's get the confidence interval of what we are saying and we'll be good to go.

I agree that some boneless setters do a good job, but many don't.

One member of a church I used to attend had a badly injured hand. No money to go to hospital. Bone setter fixed it for him.

On the other hand, a young man had a fracture of his left tibia and fibula. Went to a traditional bone setter who messed up the leg. But the time he ended up in the hospital where I was working at the time, it had become an orthopedic and plastic surgery case. To rebuild the leg. Ended up spending months in hospital.

And I once had to refer a severely diabetic patient who broke his leg, first met bone setter. Bone setter made the man's leg gangrenous. By the time they came to the small hospital where I was, the man was in a coma.Gangrenous leg, blood sugar high. I just told them to.please go to a teaching hospital, and they left.

I equally had an accident sometime in 2006 during which I had serious fracture on my two legs
and I was also pregnant of 4 months at that time. The incident happened somewhere at Oniparaga in Ogun state.

I was brought back to Lagos and was about to taken to Igbobi , but my husband insisted that they should not take me to Igbobi.
He has to make inquiries on Ijaw Bone Setter after which he was directed to one Mr Taiwo Bone at Olodi Apapa.

The Bone Setter commenced work immediately and told my hubby not to pay a dime till he finished the work except for his daily transport fare.

Mr Taiwo usually come in very early daily to set the bone. He willl pull the legs to enable it align well after which he will apply some herbs, ties his normal newspaper on the leg followed by a bandage.
At this period, the pains I experienced was usually nothing to write home about.

I was restricted to a position (On my bed) for 4 months.

My Taiwo gave us a word that after I month I will stand up for the first time shocked

We should make serious efforts to bridge the gap between contemporary and traditional medicine practices... Both will go a long way in complementing each other, rather than this unnecessary conflict of egos...

Traditional bonesetters have been saving hands and limbs way better, and cheaper than even our best orthopedic hospitals for decades... We don't need to pretend about nor debate it... There must be ancient healing tricks these people know that could be beneficial to young specialists in that field if they can swallow their ego and liaise with them.

Far more technologically advanced countries like Japan, China, and Israel still retain and uphold aspects of trado-medicine... Why do we try to be more English than the English, or more Roman than those in Rome?.

Its not that hard. Once you know what you are doing and can tell breaks from touch and know about the patients medical history its easy. As long as you do not have a weak heart at the sight of blood or broken bones you are good. The one who suffers more is the one whose bone is being set because we get to do it a lot of times even without local anesthesia especially when we need the patient awake so his reactions can guide us during the setting
