Dangote is right...using smuggled goods has multiple ill effects to the economy of a country. Few that I can think of are: Adverse effect on local market- the economic transaction of local markets will decline as more people would prefer smuggled goods as they are cheaper. Thus destroying competition and growth in economy.

They know themselves that is why they are fighting Buhari. And to make the matter worst those goods they smuggle are inferior. Very useless people go to Alaba,oshodi and ladipo you will see them there.

I would blame protectionism and lack of border control. I think what's mainly being smuggled is rice, vehicles and other items on import ban list. Nigerian smugglers sneak Petroleum in Benin Republic because fuel is more expensive there.

Nigeria could pressure Benin Republic on issue by threatening to close border again. Maybe more more joint opperations and patroling. The border situation is a serious issue that needs alot of attention. There's Drugs, weapons, smugglers, human trafficking and criminal gangs to worry about.

Uwc! Although Nigeria is not signing the agreement, the challenge we have is with Neighbour countries who are party to such agreements.
Our porous borders makes us highly susceptible to the inflow of goods from such countries thereby crippling our manufacturing base as a nation. This would lead to conversion of manufacturing sector of the economy into sales outlets for European and Asian manufacturers who would end up becoming the top beneficiaries of the agreement.

When a government refuses to beef up security around its borders, people will continue to take advantage of their porous borders; it is a source of income for them. That includes the northern borders through which murderers called fulani herdsmen with their kith and kin flood this country and cause mayhem. Some of them even possess our national ID cards and voters cards while some legitimate Southern citizens are unable to get theirs.

You are very correct. Smuggling killing localnbizz. Someone asked 'why not sell at their price and see who would smuggle anything?' He enjoys monopoly in products right down to what we use in our homes. Are they cheap? Any cement company that comes on board who may be selling bellow his price is either killed or acquired. It's only air we breath that he is yet to corner.

Cos if Benin people are too hungry and poor, they will all still pack their loads and land on Nigeria to stay as immigrants just as we have millions of Niger republic people all over Nigeria. A prosperous neighbour is a good thing to have. Only that your neighbour shouldn't prosper at your expense. Well, neither should u prosper and your neighbour suffers. At worse make una share am 50/50.
