So how come they use 'Dear Sir/Madam' on official letters?

hemartins:
What I find facinating is how people think.

God bless you.

"my dear", you have personalised the person with the word "my". It irritates many people, most especially, people who are older in age or higher in status.
"dear madam/sir" the word "sir/madam" is the key word that would disarm the person you're addressing.

Pls always limit your comments to what you know , in the UK you can address anybody as 'Oh dear'

derrydinny:
I agree with the writer, we should always know how to address others to avoid unnecessary problems, the man would be safe if he had explained to the woman how harmless the words are

it is not even in Nigeria alone, you can even get in trouble with the way you address people everywhere, in fact it is getting more serious in the western countries because you can suddenly be accused of being a homophobe or a racist cause of a harmless comment

The fact that we all know that people misinterpret is reason enough for us to mind what we utter.

The breeze in Nigeria has codeine in it.
We don't know who is high or not

There is nothing wrong with the word "my dear".

The woman has issues serious one.
It is people who misinterpret the word that has issues.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with MY DEAR and definitely something wrong with d man and d wife.....

Chances are dat d woman had been waiting for an opportunity to DEAL with d guy and used dis instance as one. Now lemme explain. I'm sure dat wasn't d first time d young man had been greeting d woman. I'm also sure dat wasn't d first time d guy responded with MY DEAR. And it's obvious dey used to share playful banter considering d young man waved aside her corrections trivially. Jus mayb d young man had ignored passes she's been making at him and she's hell-bent on showing him. One thing is certain, something went on behind d scenes between dem
There is no long talk they, she did't like it, what stop him from saying sorry or withdrawing his statement.? There is so much to it.

Pipu sef....so wetin go happen to the

Dear sir,
Dear madam,
Dear Amina
Dear Bello
Dear Funke
Dear Buhari etc

We dey write for letters naa

Bros some pple wahala dey tire me o!

Many times my younger ones replied my greetings with "how are you" but I see it normal by answering them with "I am fine".

Just because the guy used " my" with the use of dear to greet her then suddenly there was an outburst. I think the "my" is the problem.

God bless pple like us who know how to relate with pple.

I know that the word is used even in official letters, but what I don't understand is how nobody is talking about the guy being incarcerated for using the word 'dear' while addressing another man's wife. The guy was just treated in an unjust manner because he found himself in a strange environment.

"My dear" is not wrong word, maybe you should check your dictionary. It just depends on who and how one address it.

I think " dear " is just enough " my dear " sound personalized I mean dictionary stating!!!!!!! If someone or something is dear to you, it means you hold them or it very close to your heart. So i take the woman got the wrong impression and reacted stupidly.

Well, it's just better to address it to someone close to avoid hullabaloo.
