I made mention of providing enabling environment. This is infrastructure issue. A well developed transport system. Rail, cargo ship, cargo plane. When we have these alternatives, transport cost will be cheap. This apart, each states can focus on agricultural products they have comparative advantage for. So, if for example Edo produces yam tuber, Oyo may produce cocoa, Niger may produce rice. Just according to their strength.

The American government funds agriculture but it's not exclusive. The door is open to private investors who might want to go into large scale agriculture. Although, most of the time, farmers receive fertilizers, and seedlings, as subsidy to encourage production.

Yes they receive those things u listed continuously from the federal ministries of agriculture. They also receive money directly if there's any form of epidemic that affects/kill THEIR livestock or plants.

Still boils down to what am saying, state governments in Nigeria can't fund agriculture, they don't have the funds because FG collects all the money generated by any state's natural resources n send them very little amounts monthly.

Massive private sector investment (usually from abroad) doesn't really help the common man financially because those private sector guys are capitalists, they only come here to grab as much profits as possible


What we need is for government to fund individual farming, thus creating direct n sustainable source of income to farmers.

But the states have been borrowing to pay salaries, why can't they borrow to fund agric?...The last time I checked, Lagos state is the most indebted state with more than 1 trillion Naira. Although, Lagos started to key into this agric idea. They have LAKE rice but it's not still sustainable. If they can partner with Kebbi to produce rice, why can't other states do so?. I believe the more reason Lagos had to partner with Kebbi was majorly land availability issue else, the farms would have been sited directly in Lagos. The same cannot be said of Edo state or other less congested states. It's high time states Government started thinking exponentially rather than stick to archaic method of waiting for monthly federal allocations. Debt don't kill if properly managed.

Agriculture is a project just like dam construction. Funds can be borrowed. My only fear is the usual inefficiency issues that every government owned enterprise faces. But this idea is well thought out-form a joint venture. The joint venture contract will have to state that the administration and management of the agric venture would have to be done by the involved private sector partner while the government contribute, may be in a 70-30 ratio, of the funds. With this, agriculture won't just have to suck money, it will yield profits.
