The moment Janet disconnected the line, she realized she had a headache. She dropped the phone on her bed and went downstairs. She could not even think straight. What Becky had said was too much for her.

She met Zizi in the kitchen.

'Well-done. Can you please get me some analgesics? I have a headache.' She touched her forehead slightly.

'Sorry, auntie. Go back to your room and relax. I'll get them for you pronto.'

Janet nodded and went back to her room. Her phone was ringing. Without even bothering about who was calling, she cut off the call and switched off the phone. She felt she had heard enough for the day.

Moments later, Zizi came with a small tray containing a glass of water, a glass of milk and a packet containing the drug.

'I added the milk to calm you down.' She smiled as she put the tray on the stool.

'Thank you. That was very thoughtful of you.'

Janet took the drug, took some milk and lay on the bed. She must clear her thoughts before she would know what to do next.

It was after eight in the evening when Raphael decided to call Janet. He tried her two lines and was surprised that none was going. That was a surprise. He had always been able to get across to her anytime he desired.

The following morning, he still tried her line around eight a.m. and could still not get through. It was a Saturday morning and she was supposed to be in the house.

He hoped nothing had gone wrong with her. He would have gone to check her in her house but no one needed to remind him that the place was a no go area. He would just have to wait and keep trying her line.

He was frying eggs in the kitchen when he heard knock at the entrance door. His mind was in frenzy. If that should be Becky, he would not allow her to enter his apartment. She had terribly disappointed him. No more hobnobbing with her.

Janet was the one at the door.

'Oh dear. Thank God. I've been so worried about you.'

He eagerly opened the door. 'I've been calling your lines since last night. Come in. Please, come in.'

She walked in coolly.

'Just one minute.' He raised a finger up to take the excuse. He then rushed back to the kitchen. He was there for moments before he came to rejoin her in the sitting room.

He was surprised she was still on her feet. 'Please sit down. Why're you standing up?' He saw her long face and became worried.

'What could be the problem, my dear? You look distressed. But why are you still standing? Sit down.'

He pointed at the seats for dramatic effect.

'I'm okay like this. I came to find out some things.' Her voice was cool, almost cold.

'What things could be so important that you look like this and act strangely?'

She faced him squarely to bare her mind. 'Raphael, why did you lie about your relationship with Becky? Why did you deceive me about love?'

He was shocked. His countenance changed from curiosity to perplexity.

'What...what are you talking about?'

'You know what I'm talking about!' Janet's voice shot up. 'Was Becky not here yesterday?'

'Yes...but...'

'Why did you deceive me about your relationship with her?'

He shook his head vigorously. 'I didn't deceive you. I told you that we were just friends.'

'Just friends.' Janet snorted. 'Just friends, yet you sleep with her and promised you would not leave her.'

'Me?! Lailai. It is not possible.' His eyes were pleading for understanding. 'She was only a friend. I never promised her anything. We were never lovers. She was only a friend.'

Janet could not be mollified. 'And why would you want to force your way with her? Has she not been giving it to you before? Why did you want to force her to have it with you yesterday?'

Raphael nodded knowingly. 'I can see that she's the one feeding you with lies. All these are lies from the pit of hell. It is true she was here yesterday after you had gone.

'She's the one I should accuse of sexual harassment. She was the one trying to seduce me, but she didn't succeed. She...'

She stopped hm.

'Let me ask you this simple question: Is her underwear in this house or not?'

The question hit him hard. Now, he knew he was in a big fix. Lying could temporarily save him, but the truth would put him in a bigger mess. Despite the odds, he opted for the latter.

'Answer the question.' She glared at him, while he smiled sadly.

'Yes, it is, but I can explain that.'

Janet shook her head. She had confirmed what she needed to confirm. 'I'm sorry, Raphael. This relationship is over.'

The question hit him hard. Now, he knew he was in a big fix. Lying could temporarily save him, but the truth would put him in a bigger mess. Despite the odds, he opted for the latter.

'Answer the question.' She glared at him, while he smiled sadly.

Janet shook her head. She had confirmed what she needed to confirm. 'I'm sorry, Raphael. This relationship is over.'

She made to step out of the apartment.

'Wait, Janet, wait.' He looked pathetic. Sweats dotted his brows. 'Let me explain. I ...'

She wasn't listening anymore. She left his apartment for her car which she had parked outside the compound.

He followed. Flustered as he was, he tried to look calm.

'Becky deliberately left it there.' The words rushed out of his mouth.. 'It was later after she had gone that I saw it. I wasn't inside with her when she removed it. I didn't do anything or tried anything with her.'

Janet opened the car door, sat swiftly at the driver's seat and slammed the door shut. She did not even look at him as he came to the side of the car. She kicked the engine into life.

He was astonished as he watched her drive off. This must be a nightmare, he thought in dejection. How could Becky do this to him? She had tried to seduce him and had come with this scheme of being the victim!

He was astonished as he watched her drive off. This must be a nightmare, he thought in dejection. How could Becky do this to him? She had tried to seduce him and had come with this scheme of being the victim!

But Janet should have listened to his explanations and believe him. She should have known that he would not lie to her.

He went back to his sitting room feeling so sad. He could not even take his breakfast again. What would he do now? An idea came to his mind.
Give her some time. Maybe by tomorrow, she would be calm enough to listen to him.

You're a fool, a voice scolded him. Why're you behaving so childishly and naively? Why didn't you give Becky what she wanted in the first
place? A pretty lady visits a guy and expresses desire for him, what is the crime in that? Becky is beautiful. She has good curves and every other
good thing. Only a foolish guy will say no. See where your piety has landed you. Fool!

Another voice would tell him he had done the right thing. Lustfulness kills, it said. It is better to have temporary setbacks than to meet with
ultimate doom.

The voice further told his mind that he was just fretting for nothing. Fretting for nothing? His mind went blank. But why would he fret for
nothing?

He was reminded that the decision to marry Janet was not his own in the first place. It was the Lord's decision. Why not leave everything to
God? Why not let him sort things out in His own way?

Thoughts like this gave him a lot of relief. He felt relieved.

On the other hand, there appeared to be no relief for Janet. She was greatly distressed by what had happened. How could Raphael do this to
her? She had trusted him. She had believed in his innocence. Above all, she believed he was a genuine child of God and that he genuinely loved
her. Now, he had terribly let her down.

The only difference between Emma and Raphael, as far as Janet could see, was pretense. Raphael had been such a good pretender that she
had believed he was genuine.

As a fact, it even seemed Emma was better. He made no pretense about his desires. Raphael was a hypocrite. She had suspected even before
now that there was something between him and Becky; but thought it wasn't serious. Even Raphael himself had admitted that Becky visited his house before now.

And he was having intimacy with Becky while pretending to her, Janet, that abstinence was the best. What a cheat!

Janet found herself crying. She parked the car by the roadside to pull herself together. The tears dropped feely accompanied by sobs. She
waited for some minutes before she could bring herself under control. Then she brought her handkerchief, smoothened her face and tried to look calm.

What are you crying over? Her troubled mind wanted to know. You're crying over a man. No, you're crying because a man has made a big fool of you. You're crying because you've been deceived and cheated.

She started the car again and drove slowly. Raphael's image came into her mind. Oh, how a face could be so deceptive. She remembered
Becky saying he was only a wolf in sheep's clothing. Raphael, I don't ever want to see you again. Her mind was on self-reproach.

She got to her house and honked the horn. It took many seconds before the gate was opened.

'Sorry I went to the toilet.' The security guard bowed apologetically.

Janet nodded and drove inside. She saw her parents and Helen having breakfast.

'Janet, dear, how are you?' Her mother looked up at her and smiled. 'You went out early. Hope all is well.'

'Morning, mum, dad and sis.' Janet tried to mask her discomfiture.

'Don't tell me you rushed out to see that boy.' LaVos was calm.

Her mum quickly added: 'Come on, come and have your breakfast.'

'You've gone to see him again, right?' The man was as solemn as he could be.

'Yes, dad.' Janet had gone beyond caring about the issue. 'You can do anything you like with him, dad. I've just called it quits with him.'

What she said shocked all of them, although no one said a thing. Silently and slowly, she made her way upstairs to her room, ignoring the meal.

She just wanted to be alone. For now, she had no appetite at all.

She lay on her bed and closed her eyes. Oh God, when am I going to ever have a lasting relationship? Why does my relationship end just when I think it has come to stay? Jesus, please help me. Give me a trustworthy worthy man, not a hypocrite.

What she said shocked all of them, although no one said a thing. Silently and slowly, she made her way upstairs to her room, ignoring the meal.

Raphael's image came again. He held her so tightly she could feel his heartbeat. He put his hand on her shoulders and moved it down on her back. His hand appeared to trace the back strap of her bra. When the hand got to the hook, it stopped.

Her heart increased its beating. What would he do? Would he remove her top, or ask her to do so? Would he unhook the bra? Would he move a step further than he had ever gone?

To her surprise, he didn't go further. His hand only moved to the other part of her back That was amazing. Janet never thought a man could stop at that point.

Her mind came to the present. Could all that Raphael was doing be pretense? Was he pretending that they must maintain abstinence? Then he
must be a first-class pretender!

Another image came. She was the one that wanted to kiss him and be kissed. Her lips found his and she planted them there. She could sense
reluctance on his part. He however seemed to like the act, but only briefly. He detached his mouth and smiled at her.

Again, if all these were pretenses, he deserved an Oscar award.

But they were pretenses, she told herself. There should be no doubt about that. He was only pretending to her that he was pious while he had
been having his fill with Becky. Becky had been giving him sexual satisfaction!

'Janet darling, what's the problem?' The voice of her mother intruded her reverie. Janet had been so engrossed in retrospection that she didn't
know when her mum came in.

She opened her eyes and turned on the bed. Her mother sat by her.

'What happened?' Her mother searched her face, full of concern.

Janet sat up and looked at her uncertainly.

'Come on, tell mummy what happened. God, I can see that you've been crying!' She looked keenly into Janet's eyeballs.

'No, I'm not crying.' Even to Janet, her defense was puerile.

'But you've been crying.' Julie frowned. 'Look at your eyes. Oh my baby, tell me the problem.'

As Janet first attempted to tell her mother, she found herself bursting into tears again.

Her mother held her and rubbed her back. When she became sober, she told her everything. Her mother was patient and she listened
attentively.

'Mummy, why is it that my relationships don't last? I had thought this one would be the last. I really love him, and I was ready for daddy's
threat, but see how things turned to be.'

'Let me ask you some questions.' Julie smiled reassuringly 'Before now, did you ever catch him cheating on you, or did you have any suspicion?'

Janet thought briefly. 'No.'

'Have you noticed the trace of a lady in his house before - like clothing, makeup or anything?'

'No, mum.' She shook her head

Julie's eyes did not stop staring. 'So, all your reactions are based on what Becky told you.'

Janet thought briefly. 'No, mum, he himself confirmed that Becky was in his house and that her underwear was in his place.'

'She could have left it there to rope him in. If he was a very bad person as the other lady claimed, d'you think he would admit that her thing
was in his place?'

She paused to stare at her mother. 'Mum, this is a surprise. A surprise that you're defending him.'
