I don't even know why we're debating this. Accents have never been an issue in regards to period dramas, non-fiction or otherwise.

British accents are commonplace with English language period tv series and movies set outside North America, because they translate better to the principal demographic. It has always been so and will continue to be so.

It's okay that you don't like historical tv shows, but it's amateur hour trying to undermine Chernoby via trivialities like accents.

The main reason British accents are used is because it is the language most related to antiquity and its reach. You can't have people speaking with an American accent because that accent was not defined at that time and it's cool you already deduced that I don't like historical tv shows from like three or four posts. I hail thee. And as to a historical English drama set in Europe, do you mean one that just used English language as a means of communication or one that got its story or was inspired by English history? Because if it was the former, Genius, the TV series used the English language, was set in Europe but used the appropriate accents. Both seasons.

GoT cast primarily British actors because apart from being an English language tv show, the plot of GoT is based on The War of Roses that occurred in the present day UK. Since the bulk of the cast were native english speakers anyway, they were encouraged to speak with their local accents. Few foreign cast like Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Dinklage were then coached to speak with adequate RP (Upper crust English accent), for two reasons; because it's the easiest British accent to master, and because geographically and conveniently, Casterly Rock (home of Lannisters) is situated in the South-eastern England, the bedrock of RP accents.

To summarize, GoT went for realism, and achieved it.

I'm not a director nor an actor nor a film personnel but I know this: GoT was written by an American but knowing that fantasy series are more appropriate using English language with a British accent, he did what was right. Two, GRRM went for realism and achieved it but Chernobyl couldn't because of time and whatnot but it should be said that they could have done better. I am fascinated by the Chernobyl story both in life and on film. Nothing is going to change that. I am just voicing something I thought could be better.

For some reasons, my brain misinterpreted Genius as Vikings.. Only now that you said Einstein that I realized my error.

Yes, phony Germanic accents were used on season 1 of Genuis. Considering that show isn't very popular, I would hazard a guess as to why.

Finally, someone who understood the reference. And yeah, that's Soviet Russia for you man. Although I understood where Dyatlov was coming from (still the most arrogant person in the whos), there is no way on earth a nuclear reactor is supposed to explode, but somehow it did. Swamp Thing may be dead and buried, but Warner Bros still has a few aces up her sleeve.

Sister company, HBO is set to start airing DC's Watchmen this fall (October/November). HBO is the pinnacle of television so suffice to say, this show is going to be very grim indeed. I fully expect it to be just as dark as the comic source material... perhaps more.

Damon Lindelof, the man that brought us emotional rollercoasters like Lost and The Leftovers is the primary showrunner. Going by reputation, it goes without saying Lindelof is gonna_fuck with our emotions, take us on a bleak and twisted journey, and leave us hopelessly addicted for more.

Could be GoT's replacement. Certainly has the potential to be.
