This is Aizawal. It is the capital of the state of Mizoram in India. The city has a population of 293,416. It is the largest city in the state.

It is also the center of administration containing all the important government offices, state assembly house, and civil secretariat.

For many years, it had earned notoriety for severe traffic gridlock.

However, recent reforms in the road transport sector have seen motorists in a rare display of not just awesome traffic management but extreme coordination among the people too!

See below a very impressive display of traffic discipline.

Which Nigerian city do you think this kind of traffic discipline can be achieved?

This is strange and unusual. Lagos will need heavily armed MOPOL officers to achieve this kind of orderliness in traffic because unruliness is deeply ingrained in our DNA. Lagosians, especially Danfo and okada drivers are deeply resentful of order and obedience to traffic rules.

We had this sort of discipline in Lagos in 84 when Buhari introduced WAI. Anyone who drove on the wrong side of the road was emphatically told off by everyone else. It really was amazing how we all pulled together in those few months. You'd have thought God had arrived!

Then Babangida took over and we sadly all returned to our barbaric nature!

I hear Idiagbon was the man with the power. Buhari was just the puppet. Is this correct?

This can never happen in Nigeria. Those Danfo drivers will create their own lanes in few minutes

Nigerians can actually obey traffic laws if the laws are right and the enforcers don't abuse it.

Several years ago when traffic lights were reintroduced to Benin City, everyone was obeying it. But things have changed. Why did it change?
Because the laws were not followed. Enforcers began to abuse it. Except for some places, it's not obeyed.

What's the solution?
Education and Enforcement.

Yea. I think it can happen anywhere. Just with strict enforcement to ensure that drivers don't cut lanes and all. Just strict enforcement.

Those who are supposed to enforce and uphold the law like the police, road safety etc are always the first to break the law. The Police and NURTW mafia are now working together in Lagos and nobody arrests commerical buses when they break the law cos they 'settle'. It's not private vehicles that break the law cos nobody wants to pay money or get his vehicle seized.

In Nigeria, soldiers, police officers, politicians are above the law and you expect every other citizens to follow the law?

Ordinary Nigerians are not the problem, it's the service men in the country and the politicians.

Buhari was definitely responsible for jailing corrupt politicians for 200 years so he could not have been anyone's puppet. That alone took a lot of balls. A lot of people say Idiagbon was responsible for WAI, but he was working under Buhari in a military government with a rank lower than Buhari's so it's safe to say the buck stopped at the top.

I think it's tribalism that makes people say that.
