ExAngel007:
On Wednesday, President Muhammadu Buhari named the Abuja national stadium after MKO Abiola, presumed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.

Although this has been widely commended, the state of the stadium has left sour taste in the mouth.

The 60,000 capacity stadium is now turning to a shadow of itself, with dilapidated facilities, grass and refuse littering virtually every spot.
The stadium located not far from the FCT gate was commissioned in 2003, and estimated to have gulped a total of $360 million.

Below are pictures of parts of the stadium taken when TheCable visited the facility on Saturday morning

Dried tree branches lying just by the
stadium

Overgrown trees and grass along one of
the paths within the stadium

The football field now a shadow of itself
Flowers along dirty path unattended to
Stadium or grazing field?

No cleaner in sight when TheCable
visited the facility

Bushes encroaching into the stadium area

Just by the entrance gate

Imagine playing football on a field like
this

Untidy premises

Another part of the stadium taken over
by grasses

The stadium fence

The generator area

Even the small entrance gates are not left

A president that thinks Nigeria youths are lazy without job creation, I am sure so many masters holder will jump to an offer of employment as cleaners and gardeners of this stadium but we let party difference cloud our thinking, people that sing praise to Buhari naming the stadium after MKO abiola come and see, I pass by the structure every day and wonder what it would cost Nigeria to maintain a stadium located at FCT...we shouldn't let party differences, religion and tribe cloud our thinking, Buhari is a failure

It should've have been named 'Moshood Abiola memorial Fulani cattle colony'. That'll have been a more appropriate name!! Or maybe that actually is the master plan since all Nigeria is being groomed to become a giant successor to the American wild west!!!

No maintenance culture in Nigeria at all. We only see maintenance as a means of corruption and looting.

God help us all.

As far as I'm concerned, if UNILAG is not good to be named after Abiola, then this stadium is good enough.

Abeg let's move on.

Well, everything is upside down in this country. As regards to comparison between Uyo and Abuja stadium, Nigeria football league matches are not been played in Abuja as no club is using it unlike that of Uyo which akwa united plays in. In addition, when the Uyo stadium was built, akpabio signed a deal with Julius berger for continues maintainance which i believe udom renewed.

Like i said earlier, everything in Nigeria is been run upside down as states and federal government are not supposed to be running the facility. Private investors should be brought in, naming rights should be sold(dangote arena, oando stadium etc) , clubs should be privatised and not run by state government. Taking a look at epl, and laliga would give an example on how our football should be ran. See ehn, Nigeria mata don tire me cry

So Julius Berger, a multinational will sweep the walkways, water the lawns and flush the toilets... grin with some German Project Manager signing off on the toilet rolls and hand sanitizers....

Nigerians just amaze me. Behaving like spoilt Oil Sheikhs when we are wretched poor. It is a curse for the poor to be served by the rich. It is damning.

Re: Inside The 'Abandoned' Stadium Named After Abiola - The Cable by AerialMapper: 5:42pm On Jun 15, 2019
MKO Abiola Botanical National Stadium.

UNILAG was renamed after him but the sophisticated ones said the gesture was to reduce Abiola to a regional figure. They forgot some of the biggest universities are named after even more notable Nigerians than Abiola.

Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Ahmadu Bello Univeristy, Tafawa Balewa University... this was a chance to immortalise him by renaming a university after him...but they accepted an abandoned stadium and are celebrating!!!

Idiots

The most confused set of humans on earth are black people.
Gej named a lively federal university of Lagos after the June 12 hero but his
people revolted against it and now their Messiah named a dead and bushy national stadium after him
and they celebrated.Between Unilag and national stadium which is more popular?. That stadium will only be mentioned
occasionally while Unilag is everyday thing..
