There is no language that is dominant through-out the whole country , but I would say Zulu is the most used and easier to learn for many of us.

We have 9 Provinces /States and 6 out of the 9 have one language that is dominant , the other 3 have two or more dominant languages.

Most South Africans can speak about 5 or 6 of the official languages , and many can understand the rest but cannot speak or write them . We are forced to understand most of the languages because most soapies/ dramas on SABC( state owned broadcaster ) do not use much English . The news are also delivered in all languages ( different languages have their time slots). In parliament you can use any language you want, that goes for the courts and other public institutions. Everything that is important is written in all languages e.g the constitution. There are talks of developing a new language that unites all the Afrian languages though, which would not be such a bad idea but that will take a long time as we still have a lot to deal with.

Pedi
Swati
Ndebele
Xhosa
Zulu
Sotho
Tsonga
Venda
Ndebele
San/ Khoi tribes
Some ethnic groups are more concentrated in certain regions ,for example....
Zulu is the most spoken and understood language in South Africa however the province of Kwa-Zulu Natal has the most Zulu speakers since it's the kingdom of the Zulu.
The Venda , Tsonga and Pedi are more concentrated in the Limpopo province.
Xhosa people are mostly found at the Cape. both Eastern and Western Cape.
Swati and Ndebele are mostly at Mpumalanga province
The Tswana and Sotho are mostly found at North West
Gauteng province, the economic hub of South Africa is the melting pot of all tribes.
