We need a lot of improvement in the goalkeeping area. Akpeyi should have grown past all the nerves by now..

Yes but he is the best we have now.

Ezenwa and Uzoho no go area for me.

It is a pity that we find ourselves in this pathetic goalkeeping situation.

I am more comfortable with Ezenwa and even Uzoho. Akpeyi's nerves mean he can make a mistake at any time.

It was a good game overall for Nigeria.

There are no more minows in African football. We have all seen what Zimbabwe, Uganda, Burundi and Madagascar can do. This to me this will be one of the most keenly contested AFCONs ever.

Back to our game.
The defense had some shaky moments particularly in the first half. But they grew in confidence as the game progressed. The Ekong-Omeruo CB was just a delight to watch. I am not an Apostle of throwing in too many new players in CB positions. And we have seen how Balogun, Ekong and Omeruo have developed a strong chemistry at the back over the years.

Our Full backs too did well. Aina was a delight to watch, Shehu until his injury also did ok. Awaziem came in to prove why Rohr picked him and not Semi Ajayi.

In the middle Etebor and Ndidi combined well, though Etebor had some few Crazy moments. Mikel didn't particularly have a good game. I have never seen Mikel being this poor in so many years. He didn't do enough to link up play with the attackers.

When I saw Iwobi starting from wings I was like "why crowd your team with natural wingers when u will still play Iwobi from the wings"?. Musa for Mikel's substitution was expected. Musa brought pace and more attacking flair but his final balls were mostly disappointing. Chukwueze had a great game but he needs to learn to play more with his AM and CF. He was often isolated. Iwobi's move to the AM role brought spark to our attack and we dominated play more. Rohr should please keep playing Iwobi in the AM role.

I was particularly disappointed seeing Onuachu in the starting line up. I am still not completely sold on that guy. He struggled with his positioning but the lack of quality balls from the midfield obviously affected him. Ighalo, got the job done. He was at the right place at the right time. And remained calm enough to make the right decision. And eaqully worthy of mention was the sexy pass from Aina. Games like this requires a moment of brilliance to break the ice and that was it.

Akpeyi, in my opinion had one of his best games in the GWG. Though he had one or two lapses, particularly when he dropped a ball in the 18yards box that almost caused an equalizer. And another harmless goal kick he was supposed to guide costing us a corner. He didn't have a great game but he was very much ok.

I particularly liked the intensity with which we played the second half. And I also like the fact that we were able make good passes together.

Rohr please our start 11 should be the team that ended that game. If Shehu recorvers well enough he can start else Awaziem can start at RB. Aina should be maintained in the LB position.

We take it a game at a time.

Bring on Guinea.

however I think if Collins is fit he should start the next game and Olaoluwa should be moved to the right at least that will give us width and pace on both sides

Odion Ighalo's 77th minute strike was enough to secure three points for the Super Eagles in their 2019 Africa Cup of Nations opener against Burundi on Saturday evening.

Taking a look at the statistics, as provided by Whoscored, from the match staged at the Alexandria Stadium, several Super Eagles players racked up game-high figures, more than the Swallows.

On his competitive debut, Villarreal winger completed a game-high seven take-ons, three more than the next man Wilfred Ndidi.

The 2.01 meters tall striker Paul Onuachu used his height to good advantage, winning a game-high 12 aerial duels while Ola Aina was the top interceptor with three, an honour he shared with David Nshimirimana, Gaël Duhayindavyi and Shassiri Nahimana.

When it came to clearances, the impressive Chelsea defender Kenneth Omeruo was the top man with six, two more than Ola Aina and Frederic Nsabiyumva.

Arsenal winger Alex Iwobi's three key passes was a game-high figure, Onuachu finished with a team-high four shots of which two were on target.

Torino new signing Aina touched the ball more than any other player, 98 touches,16 more than second-paced William Troost-Ekong.

Nice Analyses from all Ends. I hope Rohr builds on his Ball that made him to drop Iheanacho and subbed off Mikel at the right time.

In the next Match, I hope Onuachu and Mikel ain't in the starting XI. If Osimhen is fit, I wish to see him lead the Line, with Iwobi as 10 and Musa on the left Wing.

Musa's electric pace is hard to contain, also he's not gumming to the Wing, rather drifting inward to help in the buildup play.

We've got enough Wingers in the Team, thus no need playing Iwobi as a Winger as well. Moreso, if Collins is fit for the next Match, I hope to see him play as a LB and Aina moves to RB.

Certainly Aina plays better as a LB, but we do not have Ebuehi in the Team now, and Awaziem is offensively lacking to play the position.

Akpeyi......?! I pray he won't turn to Akpere (Basket) in the subsequent Matches.

This is why a country like Guinea even despite the quality of their players cannot win the AFCON.

Exactly. Same with Mali.

Those guys always have good players scattered across Europe but they remain an average team.

How can you say you have not seen when Taiwo Taye was miles better than Celestine Babayaro?

Taiye Taiwo looked a little bit mechanical for me. Played with lots of power and directness.

What we saw yesterday from Aina was a mixture of tactical knowledge, effortless skills, easy running up and down the flanks and utilisation of the midfield as a platform to make his runs. Very similar to Babayaro and Taiwo did not play in such manner.

Ola Aina is a good player cos I knew Idowu,Echijele and Shehu are not better even before WC.

Ola Aina and Ebuehi competing as RB would be like Maicon and Danny Alves then of Brazil.

His omission from Russia 2018 squad was justified. He was awful in the test games he played before the WC.

I don't want to see Mikel in the starting line up for the next game.

That 2nd half team and setup should be our starting 11 going forward.

I think we lacked a platform to build from the back and that took away our formidability going forward. I will drop Etebo for Mikel and let him work with Ndidi in the midfield to create build up plays.

I feel against a side with more bravery who will have a go at us will break that midfield. Both Ndidi and Etebo lost balls with little pressure. We need Mikel as a base to keep it tidy while we build play.

I actually remember one calamitous error, when he miscontrolled the ball. Apart from that, Akpeyi was very confident on the ball and helped in keeping possession. I think it was more of the fans shaking and scared of Akpeyi erring than Akpeyi making a mistake.

He had a good game. Helped in keeping possession, made a brilliant save.

Ezenwa might instill more confidence but I doubt he can help in the way Akpeyi did when it comes to build up plays.

Rohr and his crew deserve praise for setting up the team to keep the ball. Nice seeing us try to build from the back. Either way, he needs to work on making the team more comfortable in build up to limit the chances for errors.

Absolutely brilliant addition. Pointed out a lot of things that were right with the team. Good mention of Omeruo being a defensive Marshal for the side. The work rate of Onuachu was brilliant but Iwobi’s lack of directness which I pointed out before the game caused Onuachu to be under a lot of pressure.

Aina's touches emphasises his tactical plays. Opening for passes and making good passing combination.

More like Musa's final balls were awful and why I feel Onyekuru would have offered more fluid option in the forward line but might be selfish with the ball not to release it early to the forward.

I think Musa should make more direct runs towards goal and release shorter passes to the forward. His technique to release balls are limiting his performances.

Check these

Check the recovery n attacking third pass of both Etebo n Ndidi...

It is going to be a tough call for Rohr to drop Mikel on bench then like I said earlier iwobi might not last the whole duration cos of the weather.. He almost gas out at the last mins of the encounter...

I have said it before don't expect many goals at the beginning... Our second game might produced two goals...

I'm very pleased with this game, now we can have a free ride to last 16.

Playing close to the attack with Onuachu put Mikel under pressure because the heat was on him. Defending and clearing is far easier than creating play in a parked defence. Still Etebo and Ndidi lost balls.

With Musa coming in, having him and Chukwueze stretching the defence, Iwobi had room to orchestrate play and pass to spaces. This was limited with Iwobi wide, not making direct runs down the left.

I believe an Ndidi - Mikel partnership is the best we can get. Iwobi in AMF. Onyekuru, Ighalo and Chukwueze playing forward will lead to a more formidable performance and balance.

Let's be honest here, seem we do not like some names appearing on the Team's Lineup? It was obvious that the introduction of Musa changed the Game. How are we so sure Onyekuru would have fared better Musa?!

How many wrong Decisions did Musa make that we are already suggesting Onyekuru should be ahead of him in the pecking Order?!

Musa brought directness, if not Onyekuru, I would have picked Musa. I like forwards being mobile. That is why I will pick Ighalo over Onuachu and Iheanacho over Ighalo. Onyekuru has more on the ball skills and goals than Musa. It has nothing to do with liking or disliking any one.
