It's a joke of a country. When they banned 41 items - they only ended up boosting Benin & cameroun - who are smuggling about the same. If you check the rice Benin & Camereoun are importing & re-exporting to Nigeria - then you'll know Nigeria fake rice production cannot even pass the first muster.

Indirectly, this is what he's trying to tell us:every Beninese, babies, elderly, poor, rich, thin, fat and everyone in between consumes 600 GMS OF RICE DAILY!! In other words 6 servings of this cup.

So Beninese actually EAT 1.8 KG OF COOKED RICE A DAY-they'd spend most waking hours preparing and eating rice of this quantity without time for anything else!! These guys have jokes but some jokes write themselves! This is what happens when you try to take refuge in lies.

I'd be deranged to think that Nigeria has the ability to feed 150-180-200 million people without importing some significount amount of food!

Nigeria's Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, must by now have understood what it means to fight the rice mafia in Nigeria.

For about a week now, he has been in the eye of the storm over comments reportedly credited to him, relating to the fact that seven rice mills had closed shop in Thailand on account of the drop in the importation of rice by Nigeria.

Apart from the response of Thailand Ambassador to Nigeria, Wattana Kunwongse, denying remarks that rice mills are collapsing in the Asian country; many people had gone to town, particularly on the social media to castigate the minister for telling lies.

This was done rather than viewing the statement credited to the minister in the context that Nigeria is involved in a trade war that dates back many decades.

Kunwongse, in a statement, said: "The report is not only misleading but a distortion of the actual conversation between myself and the honourable minister of agriculture at the federal ministry of agriculture and rural development."

He narrated how he "praised President Buhari's Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP), the essence of which is the endeavour to move the country to a self-sufficiency and export-oriented economy, and to that worthy cause, Thailand stands ready to work closely with the Nigerian government in the field of technological transfer and agricultural machineries."

It seems relevant and necessary to ask how the exporting country hopes to benefit from assisting an importing country in technological transfer and agricultural machineries that will end up stopping the latter from continuing to depend on the former. Some issues raise questions of correlation and causation.

What the ambassador did not explain is how his country imported 1,647,387 metric tonnes of rice to Republic of Benin in 2017 alone.

Mr Kunwogse also did not mention that Thailand's import of rice to Benin has been steadily on the increase, 805,765MT in 2015, and 1,427,098MT in 2016, while official import from Thailand into Nigeria was steadily declining.

Nigeria has an estimated 180 million people while the population of Republic of Benin is about 11 million people. In 2014, 1,239,810MT was imported into Nigeria.

It declined to 644,131MT in 2015, and to 58,260MT in 2016, reaching an all-time low of 23,197MT in 2017, and if this trajectory remains on a downward path, Nigeria may not be importing rice by 2020.

The flow of rice imported from major Asian origins to Benin for onward shipment to Nigeria is a factor that should not be ignored in the regional rice trade in West Africa.

ECOWAS data indicate that over half of the rice Benin imports is sold into the Nigerian market. Port of Cotonou statistics show about 2.4 million metric tons (MMT) of cereals arriving at the port in 2014, over half of which is rice.

They import food worth more than 20B dollars - that is A LOT OF FOOD. In their books they can claim their agriculture is as good as Brazil - but in reality it long collapsed. Kenya this year reached 1B dollars food import per annum - so you can say per-capita - they should be doing around 4B dollars - if they had agriculture as good as kenya - but you see they are basically importing everything from milk powder, tomatato paste, rice, sugar, wheat name it.

This Benin traders selling rice to Nigeria are the Nigeria's rice cartel.

As for Kenya's importing case,it is well understood that Kenyan farmers have taken over farms in our neigbouring East African countries. These farmers then sell it to Kenya when there is a deficit.

Those onions/tomatoes we bought from Tanzania or Uganda might be well from a Kenyan farmer or a firm associated with a Kenyan in one way or another. This is a strategy we can use to prop up our acreage in arable land. You must be oportunistic and smart to survive.I know they are making it hard for Kenyans to own land in their market(TZ) but we are beating them still.

Apart from Langat the LARGEST Tea Estate Owner in TZ,there are many Kenyan enterprises using TZ's slowness to beat them.Magufuli never lied when he said that there are close to 500 Kenyan firms in TZ!

Below is an intresting excerpt from https://www.nation.co.ke/news/Tanzanian-farmers-reap-big-in-Nairobi/1056-5162596-9e1odw/index.html

''The Arusha hotelier singled out onions among the leading commodities consistently exported to Kenya because, unlike maize, they are not affected by drought.

“Our onions are preferred by Kenyan traders, who pack them in Nairobi and export overseas,” he said.

Most of the onions are grown in the remote irrigated fields of Mang’ola, about 200 kilometres west of Arusha. Due to the high demand and reliable market overseas, Kenyans have virtually taken over the farms through contract farming.

Under the arrangement, Kenyan investors hire farmers to grow onions and even supply inputs such as fertiliser.''

Goel:

You would better need that. Statement was stupid.

Mine is very well. Quote your statement and justify it instead of doing personal attack.

East Asia which was epicenter of global growth in past decades and South & Southeast Asia who are becoming now have very low population growth rates. Africa has higher population growth rate (even large part of its GDP growth rate comes from population growth rate) while Asia has stagnant and even declining population even with poorest Asian countries outside greater middle east.

Market demand increases when living standards rise, market doesn't only lie inside country but exported too. Prosperity comes from stability, then free market, then diversification and most important factor is demography.

Both declining and rising population are a threat to future of any country.
I think I had asked you to study DEMOGRAPHIC TRANSITION MODEL. BUT YOU DIDN'T AND CALLING ME MAD??

Let me give you a clue, suppose two countries with same and stable population (say A & B).
Both have stable populations.
A: Low population growth rate
Low and same death rate (may be developed country)
B: High population growth rate
High and same death rate (may be a least developed country)

Once you start infesting facilities (say healthcare), population will jump suddenly in B as death rate falls. Population growth graph will form a paraboliv curve. Population will grow, stablise with awareness and will decline with falling fertility.

The median age of population determines how much skilled than can be, how much they can earn, how much they can consume and how much they can produce.

Read on internet yourself. And my humble advice to you, say what you KNOW about anything and not what you BELIEVE about anything. Making up things will only bring embarrassment to you.

You are engaging me in argument with me in anger because I conducted a personal attack on you. But your argument was still foolish. You are defending undefendable and wrong by default.

Population growth doesn't increase market size in general. Increased circulation of money in country's economic system does because it increases purchasing power of people. This is called free market.

This is called a free market. Africa isn't growing despite population.

India has one of fastest growing markets since 1991. Africans moreover should be last people on planet to call Indians poor. We are poor as compared to countries we want to compete with, not against you.

Poverty? We have different standards and we have finished those.
We will apply new ones from 2021 on.
https://worldpoverty.io/index.html

India invested very much needed with all its funds wherever it should and could. And that's why economy boomed since 90s.

How many times are you going to insult yourself? cheesycheesy

China curbed its population growth forcefully while Japan and Asian tigers ran awareness programs. All their populations are declining today. Seriously, what you are smoking?

Underfunded? India has annual budget of $750 billions!! It will even cross $2 trillions by 2030 if keeps on growing as planned.
Poor performance? India was biggest gainer in HDI in this decade.

Market is never formed unless people have purchasing power. They won't have until they earn high and they won't til their skill is high. What do you expect from countries where median age is 17-18 years? You think they will grow?

Asians started from tapping western markets. We all from Indians to Japanese, still rely on western markets for most of exports.

You said exactly what I said just minus population growth from it. High population growth demands money for development of more people and consumption of more resources.

Saturation doesn't cover entire population but the population which can afford it. It explains why Apple jumped from USA to China and now India without tapping all phone users. It will find even a smaller market in India.

Simply, it was an argument for bigger & better. For a smaller country, size of population and city will be small so will be bigger for a big country.

The thing that makes difference how they succeed is their income per person. Hence, population different between nations ultimately losses its relevance. It's internal matter of a country.

Total size only defines power as US is far far more powerful than other developed countries but its no way worlds most developed country or fastest growing developed one.

Most certainly. People just don't wake up and run towards cities.

My input makes very much sense here. You quoted it just because YOU HAD TO REPLY ME.
Read that part again.

India's PPP GDP per capita is nearly double of Africa and makes very much difference as seen on ground.

India's nominal GDP per capita was deliberately held by government by manipulating currency to keep Indian exports competent. We keep on buying $, selling ₹ to maintain a huge forex reserve. US had put us on currency watch list multiple times.
India's real nominal GDP per capita will be around $4,000 and total nominal GDP nearly double of Africa for same population if India's sets ₹ free. But it will create an economic crisis.

We have doubled our GDP in ₹ between 2011 & 19 while in dollars, we grew only some 60%.

China was a net exporter so chose to appreciate its currency and added a trillion dollar every year since 2006 (when it was $3 trillions economy). Most of by currency appreciation and inflation than real GDP growth.

You have knowledge, information and the understanding to see the wider picture! You're genuinely wise, sir;don't get frustrated by the rude noises from the cognitively challenged.

Definitely pass The carnivore - it's near the park - if you're a meat lover. If you're interested in universities - try Strathmore, USIU & KU. For great craft beer - Sierra along Ngong road is good. Shopping in any of big malls - would do - highly recommend Village Market or Hub or even two Rivers or Garden City. Definitely drop in any Nairobi night clubs around CBD or Hurlingham or Westlands. Also definitely try Nyama Choma+Ugali in any good joints in Nairobi.

But river road is not very safe....so be careful at night time.

From Thailand and India 2.5m tonnes are imported by Benin all nearly destined to Nigeria in 2016.Let not add other imports from Indonesia, Pakistan,Brazil and the US.If you add Cameroon smuggling routes then we can conclude Nigeria cannot produce even 1million metric tonnes of rice per year.At least 90% of Benin imports are re-export to Nigeria through smuggling routes .Benin import a billion dollars worth of mostly parboiled rice...they consume white rice.
cheesy These hot tears of yours do not erase the fact that Nigeria is Africa's biggest producer of rice. You may kill yourself over that and we won't care. tongue
Let me add to your pain. Total import of parboiled rice by Benin, Cameroon and Togo is around 3 million tonnes. (see attached table below).I am even being generous with figures to suit and help you. cheesy

Let's assume all of this is planned to be exported to Nigeria. Now,some of this rice would not even get to Nigeria due to custom's disturbances. Some would be impounded. Let's assume 90%gets to Nigeria, that's 2.7million metric tonnes. Nigeria rice consumption is 7million metric tonnes. 7m minus 2.7m gives you 4.3million metric tonnes. Egypt, Africa's second biggest producer of rice produces less than that. That still leaves Nigeria as Africa's biggest producer of rice no matter how you turn and cry, boy. tongue

And next time leave Brazil out of your stupid list of rice exporters if you don't want to keep sounding stupid.
