It affects everything. Your phone, your charger, your battery, your ear, your neighbors, etc. Tiger generator is a killer. It also disappoints you when you have important visitor or have important program to watch.
Sign of poor maintenance?

Because of the terrible situation of light where I currently stay, I've decided to add phone charging to the list of services I render. I have "I pass my neighbor" generator but the popular view here is that small generators shorting battery life. Most people I've spoken to about it advised me against it and told me they won't even patronize me. But is it really true that small generators damage phone batteries?

Consider this:
1. Electric current is measured in volts.

2.Coil is the primary source of electric current.

3. For the coil to produce electric current, there must be an energy that drives/powers the coil.

4. The energy might be wind turbine, solar panel, water(hydro) turbine, petrol/diesel engine etc.

5. The number of Wats produced by a particular unit of generator could be determined by the strength of the force (energy) that drives/powers it and is measured in Horsepower(HP).

6. The current thus produced is called Alternate Current (AC).

7. phone batteries are charged with Direct Current (DC).

8. It is the duty of phone chargers to covert AC to DC in order to charge the phone.

9. Most phone chargers accept voltage between 100-220V.

10. What phones recognize is the number of volts (voltage) that flows from the charger...

11. What chargers recognize is the number of volts that flows from the AC.

CONCLUSION
It does not mater the size of your generator, what matters is the output voltage and the stability. A PHCN light of 110V will charge a phone slower than a small generator that produces 200V all things being equal.

P.S. I am not an engineer, I studied History/International Studies in school, but I've learnt a lot from the street. So please don't take my words as absolute. Engineers in the house can correct me.
shouldn't you direct this lecture to ur clients instead of us here. For me it does not damage anything. I have been using the small gen for a very long time and it hasn't directly damage any of my stuff. I even use to power my 49" LG smart TV which I bought since April last year, and even use it direct without stabiliser or ups.

Yes it does.
The output is the culprit. The electrical waves is not smooth, also the output current.

Yes it does, small Generator damages phone bar3, even inverters that is not properly install will damage phone bar3 too

Big Gen is good

Stop fooling around with tiger gen.

Perkins and Mikano is not that expensive na..

Is better to get big good generator due to that job, tiger generator easily asked for services and easily spoil due to oil and petrol are combined.

Lg is built for Nigerian erratic power and that is why all my electrical appliance are LG . The TV and fridge have inbuilt stabilizer, have you not noticed that?

Try it with Samsung or other brands and know how far?

No AVR or bad AVR can damage battery in small or big generators.
Re: Does Small Generator Damage Your Phone's Battery? by Rollitout: 10:20am On Jul 06, 2019
In addition, electrical current operates with Frequency be it PHCN OR GEN and the standard is 50Hz, that is the frequency required to complete one cycle of electricity in a second PHCN has this standard frequency of 50Hz but most Gen like the small ones has less than 50Hz so any device you operate with this substandard frequency will lead to gradual damage with time.

So why post all that irrelevant stuff?....and the ignorance about 220 volts would charge faster than 110 volts?...when in fact it will fry the device that was designed to operate on 110 volts? Abeg... modify your posts before people follow your enlightenment and damage their devices.

What if you use it with a UPS?

It damages both laptop and phone batteries, charger and sometimes components.

Proven by thousands. Ask a phone repair professional.

The culprit is the irregular flow of fluctuating current from the tiger gen.

P.S. I am not an engineer, I studied History/International Studies in school, but I've learnt a lot from the street. So please don't take my words as absolute. Engineers in the house can correct me.

1. I think the frequency of the AC matters alot. A relatively low frequency will damage your appliance not just batteries alone. The higher frequencies means that the AC and DC produced is smooth enough for safe operation of your electronics.

2. Another source of instability might arise when load (your electronics) is imposed on the generator. The magnetic flux used to generate current is not sourced from a permanent magnet but an electromagnet which means that part of the current generated is used in creating magnetic field. This could alter the balance of the circuit if a controller (AVR) is not in place to restore balance. The problem here is that most small gens e.g tiger, honda etc don't usually have AVRs and so an unsteady AC and DC is produced.

In summary, the unsteady current due to current fluctuation is what damages your phone batteries. How does it damage your batteries? I have the following theories from a chemical engineering point of view.

1. First of all, direct current is what is used to recharge/restore the potential of batteries through a principle known as electolysis. A steady state current is required for the ions of the electrolyes at the cathode terminal to be properly disengaged and restored. An unsteady system will result in a haphazard molecular arrangement of the electrolyte lattice which will reduce the performance of the battery.

2. Unsteady flow of current might lead to the break down of the components that make up the battery because of difference in 'coefficient of expansion' of the battery components. You could notice this by the unusual rise in temperature of the battery while charging.

Note: coefficient of expansion is just the ability of a material to increase in size on the application of heat. Differences in this ability may result in hobbling of the army of molecules in the said appliance or device.

It charges phones slowly; that I know.

Well deduced but electric current is measured in amperes not volts. Electric voltage is what is measured in volts. A simple explanation, imagine water flowing through a pipe, the rate at which the water is flowing is similar to current while the pressure of the water is just like the voltage.

Small generators usually have too many fluctuations (voltage, frequency) in their output that's one the reasons why they are not always advisable to use for charging phones and other sensitive electronics.

Final thing. Yes it is true that phone charges are said to accept voltage inputs between 100 - 240V however note this, the lower the voltage the more the current it will draw. This is why it is bad because high currents can damage the charger easily (or blow the fuse). By damage I mean burn it.

Solar Charger for Cell Phone
The average solar-powered charger takes between 6 and 10 hours to charge an electronic device, such as a cell phone

Now you're talking. Fluctuating current. If you service your small gen regularly you may hardly experience such

I have used small gen for 11 years, on my 7th laptop, also a phone technician. None of the 7 laptops ever had power issue.

11 (elebin) yearz... Dayum..... That generator na ancestor. This na real case of when you find that special one don't let it go.

Lol.

But on a lighter note people complain about gen not being good for phone batteries.
Maybe adding a stabilizer will give your customers better assurance

Based on fact and experience, I beta pass my neighbor is reliable, affordable, easy to maintain. The only disadvantage is in carrying load. Big generator charge faster that's all.
