depends on how you look at it. if your school is in the same location with your sponsor, it will look like you are going there to stay with him/her and will pose an issue to prove your non immigrant intent. Aside that, there is nothing wrong with having a US Sponsor as far as the person is financially capable.

Okay thanks. So I have a friend who was denied a few days ago. Her sister, a Legal permanent resident lives in the same state her school is located. According to her, the VO was particular about the city the sister lives in the state and felt she was denied based on that. My own case is similar with the slight difference been that I have 2 sponsors, my Dad and brother, a US citizen. He also resides in the same state my school is located. The city he lives and that of the school has a driving time of about one hour. Please advice.

I already scheduled my visa appointment for last week of July

Visa is subjective, i am not a V.O to determine the outcome of your case. You just need to attend your interview and present your case well. Its always better to avoid applying to school that your sponsor resides in so as not to raise suspicion that you are going there to stay with him. if that's the only admit you have, prepare for possible questions and be hopeful

Yes i did. Two other schools. 1 admit and 1 reject but I deferred the admission for the one that accepted me.

Hello house ,
I was denied previously and I scheduled another interview. Please what do I need to reprint ? Or is there an additional document to be requested from my school ?
Re: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 15 by graduatestudent(f): 2:15pm On Jul 12, 2019
Interview Date: 10th July
Time: 6:45am
Location: Lagos
Status: Administrative Processing, now issued (F1 and F2)

School: Fordham University, NY
Program: Master of Science in Marketing Intelligence
Funding: $20k
Deficit: $73K (including living expenses, dependent expenses and health insurance)

I was interviewed by the white guy at window 9. He had approved an older man and denied a lady that went just before me.

Me: Good morning with a big smile, I had told my son to shine his teeth too grin
VO: Good morning
VO: Is this your child?
Me: Yes my son.
VO: Do you have any other children?
Me: Yes, 2 younger girls.
VO: Has your husband and daughters been to the US before?
ME: Yes, many times for family holidays.
VO: Why are you going for a Master's degree?
ME: I am on track to be promoted to the role of Commercial Manager at Bleep in 2 year's time as I was invited to join the commercial manager
in training program last year. I already have extensive experience in Sales and spent 5 years as Sales manager at my current job. As part
of my learning path, I need to further develop my knowledge and skill in strategic marketing, data analytics and customer driven
marketing. These will be achieved by specializing in Management Science and quantitative methods to earn my degree in Marketing
Intelligence.
VO: So you need this degree to be promoted to commercial manager?
ME: Yes
VO: How did you get this scholarship(looking at my I-20)?
ME: I went through a rigorous application process that included 2 video interviews and 2 audio interviews as apart of the application process. I
impressed the admissions committee with my interviews and also my resume and I was given a scholarship.
VO: I see your dad is sponsoring you
Me: Yes. I also have my personal savings as well funds from my husband.
VO: What does he do?
ME: He owns different companies with factories at bleep, bleep and bleep and also invests in properties.

From that point the interview took a different turn embarassed

VO: When is the longest time you've stayed in the US?
ME: About 6 weeks(sweating at this point).
VO: What did you go to the US for?
ME: Holiday and also to have my baby
VO: Was this the only time you stayed long in the US
Me: NO. I also stayed for about 6 weeks a few years ago, when I had my other daughter
VO: Have we sighted your payments before?
ME: Yes for my first daughter when I renewed my visa after giving birth to her. But not for my 2nd daughter as drop box had commenced when
I had her.
VO: Furiously typing away most of the time not saying anythingembarassed.
ME: I have the receipts here if you want to see them
VO: Oh you have the receipts? Let me see for your 2nd daughter, it is noted here we have seen the first one.
Me: Hands them over
VO: Looks through and calls his supervisor(I think). They switch off the mic and were talking. My heart beating at that point, like what are
these people saying?
VO: How much did you pay?
Me: About $15k
VO: Have you been refused a visa for any other country recently?
ME: NO
VO: Are you sure?
Me: Yes, I am sure
VO: Typing furiously again for about 5 mins and saying nothing.
VO: Finally picks a white paper and fills it out. You have been placed on AP and we will contact you via email for any updates regarding your
application
ME: Ok. Are there any other documents you need me to provide?
VO: No, we will contact you via email if we need anything
ME: Sorry to bother you, but how long will this AP take?
VO: Between 3 to 5 Business days
ME: Thank you

I wasn't sure whether to laugh or cry as my AP wasn't like all others I have seen. He didn't say they were going to verify any documents or give me any other slip besides the AP letter. Nothing about the information other VOs have given to students. I couldn't even explain to my son what the verdict was.

Fast forward to this morning, I tracked my visa status and both visas have been issued.

I don't know how this transcript will help, because the interview didn't really focus on my going as a student for the later part which was quite perplexing. I give Glory to God for all he has done and a big thank you to everyone on this forum for sharing as much as they can to help others. The people who were on AP and came back to confirm their visas were issued gave me hope even though my scenario was different.

Good luck to everyone still in the process!

Update: Status changed to issued this morning. Had a deficit of $30k

Thanks to all who contribute here.

Prollins:
Interview: July 11
Status: Administrative processing
No funding
Window 3

Vo: What are you going for?
Masters degree in information technology in North Carolina a&t university
Vo: How many schools and name?
2. North Carolina a&t and Texas a&m kingsville
Vo: Why the school?
Apart from the fact that the school is one of top and largest Hbcu in the country. They have two research center that are key to cybersecurity. Center of identity science and center of cyberdefense that has a 20 year partnership with the NSA.
Vo: How do you want to fight cybercrime?
I'd be learning about advanced encryption, handshake protocols that is used in whatsapp and other messaging apps etc to protect information.
Vo: Why HBCU? (Wasn't expecting this question)
I liked what the school had to offer and I'd feel at home, lol
Vo: Sponsor?
Grandma
Vo: What does she do?
She's retired
Passes bank statement
Vo : I'd be keeping the bank statement to confirm validity, if it's false, you will be banned. I looked at him and smiled
Passes the white paper with administrative processing ticked.

sharwama:

I am really sorry about your denial my friend.
I know you didn't ask for my opinion but I care about you enough to point few things out. First, I can't explain why you didn't get an approval, I am not the VO that interviewed you but I can see areas you could have done better.
Bold one: APSU isn't the only school that offers "broad" course in Mathematical finance and you know it! Choosing a school because of a professor's research is no longer a powerful reason, because a lot of persons have abused it and VOs are getting bored. Predstan and I were "acting drama" the other day and as a "VO" I mentioned that apart from funding and research, some people don't have better reasons why they picked a school. You have to do thorough research on your school and program and come up with a better response.
Bold 2: You currently work as a pension fund administrator? Let's keep that in mind as we proceed.
Bold three: I have said it before and I will say it again. Your post graduation plan has to be about you first, keep Nigeria out of it. Nigeria doesn't care about you, Nigeria probably doesn't know you exist. Nigeria has failed you! Don't say you are coming to contribute quota kini, did Nigeria ask you to do that? Understand where I am coming from please.
Be self centered in your response, when you bag this degree, what are the doors you intend to walk through that you couldn't have access to in the past, what's in it for you! Keep in mind that by becoming a better version of yourself, you indirectly make Nigeria a better place grin
It's a win win grin grin grin. Ok before I get carried away.
You currently work as a pension fund administrator, you are already in the system , you are in a good place to champion the changes you seek. You can start from the man in the mirror like Michael Jackson grin, you can start from social media platforms. Yes, you don't need this degree to do that! It's highly unbelievable that you will spend millions of naira because you want to " harness your creative energy towards solving the problem of delay or non-payment in our retiree gratuity and pension"

This is also not enough reason to come home, where is your home tie?
Bottom line: Your responses in Sharwama's opinion were not convincing enough. In future, I hope you can do better. I wish you well my friend.

Sorry I have to place this here,
But it is appalling when an individual believes his/her opinion is superior to another's with regard to religious beliefs. With this said, I strongly recommend we respect everyone's religious orientation. No matter how one emphasizes ones opinions, you cannot change everyone's belief.
Those who believe there's no God should allow those who believe there's one to continue believing and those who believe in God cannot also impose their beliefs on anyone. (Let Baal defend himself). We all without an iota of a doubt will know if there's a God after death (for those who believe or don't believe in the afterlife). I hope it wouldn't be a terrible way of finding out about this existence or non-existence.

Abeg let me post my transcript as I remember it grin:

Abuja Consulate.

8th July, 2019.

Window 8/9 (Can't recall, but last window on the right when facing the VO)

White lady (She was typing most of the time).

Me: Good morning
VO: Good morning.

Pass me your passport?
Your I-20 too.
Have you travelled before?
Me: No
VO: What would you be doing in the US?
Me: I would be going for my masters in Geology at ULL.
VO: What are you currently doing?
Me: I am a Grad Assistant at University of **** (From her countenance, I felt she didn't want any more response, so I didn't say more)
VO: What would you do when you get back?
Me: I would come back to my current job. This masters degree would enable me get to the rank of an Assistant Lecturer at the University of ****. I also intend to create a research lab, a Petroleum Geoscience research lab, alongside my colleague and in the long run I hope to join a Research Group or Institute. (She was typing and nodding as if I don dey talk too much sef. (I think she saw my Graduate Teaching Assistantship at ULL)
VO: Who would be funding the remaining cost?
Me: My mum and elder sister.
VO: What do they do?
Me: My mum and sister are lecturers in Nigerian Universities, and my sister is currently carrying out a fully funded PhD.
VO: Where is she carrying out this PhD?
Me: The United Kingdom.

Your Visa has been approved.
She gave two slips and said some other stuff I tried to listen to well but can't recall now. ☺

I did my due diligence. I ensured I filled every document completely and accurately, but I would not deny the God factor from how I got a First Class result, getting a job,
being funded till when I was issued a Visa. (All of these played a role in my success). He is merciful!

Profile:
BSc Geology and Mining
4.59/5.00
GRE: 311 - Q/V - 157/154 (Analytical writing - 4)
Experience: Few months of being a University Lecturer at time of application.
Applied to three schools: only one acceptance and was awarded a Graduate Teaching Assistantship (Tuition ($25212) waived) even after being waitlisted by two schools and told that I didn't qualify for the second round of offers.
Defit/Living expenses is $10848. I'll work for just 10 hours weekly.

1 publication in an open access journal.

3 Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) certificates from reputable schools in the world.

No documents aside my international passport and Form I 20 were requested from me by the VO.

God's grace was really evident. I was shocked when the VO said approved. I actually expected many more questions which I had answers to.

Two things that are noteworthy are (1) Please mind what you post online (it's good to have and share your opinions but our rights end where it infringes on another person's rights) and (2) Be careful on how you fill your DS 160 (Fill it as completely and accurately as possible).

I thank those who helped me prepare with my mock interviews.

Yes, Lagos says no appointment available most of the times, but few of the times, date pops up.

For Abuja, also, earlier date becomes available once in a while, for instance, 2hrs ago, I checked and 1 slot for August 14th was available and a friend was able to book it.

Here's a strategy, you're allowed to view the calendar 5 times a day, you can check the page every 5 hours, make sure one of it is an odd hour when ppl might still be sleeping grin cheesy, it's alot of hard work, I know.

Also, tell people that has booked for both locations to alert you whenever they see dates that are favourable.

So it's not impossible to get dates for July ending or beginning of August, just keep checking but not too much so the system doesn't ban you for 72hrs.

All the best.

Visa approved !! @ the 6th attempt

My Nairaland experience has been quite an eventful one because I was blessed, for no significant effort of mine, to meet certain people. It actually sounds a bit weird, to say that people I've never met in real life (except here) have made more impact in my adult life than some I know in real life. There are certain things I crave, and few people there are who have it and graciously give. The list is a bit long, but I'll mention just two of them here. It is important to particularly mention these two, because it is the thought of them that makes me feel I might be missing (and losing) somethings if I get too busy to check this thread These two and few others inspire me more than anyone else here, and that is not to say that I do not appreciate the input of others . I certainly do not agree with everything these three people write about, but none of them has ever failed in that peculiar area in which they inspire me. These are people who have a healthy and profound thought pattern. They all know what they want to say, and they know how to say it. Almost always, I'm awed by the advices and transcripts vets

Sharwama; I had my first mock interview with this Queen , I did terribly bad in the mock but not without lessons and counseling at the end, both of which influence my approval in huge measure.
Sharwama thinks too deeply, and lets her fingers take the depth of her mind deeper when she writes. You think you understand what she wrote, but you'll understand her better if you read again, slowly. She makes you laugh, while savouring some hard truths. She is the greatest, in my opinion, when it comes to satire. Sharwama will make you take pain with a smile on your face. How she thrusts a dagger through a person's chest with her words without failing to give onlookers a viewing pleasure, is a lesson I'm still struggling to grasp. Dear queen , may the force always be with you

Fairheart ;
Oga took it from where the queen stopped , mock every 2days , correction upon corrections . @fairheart, Sincerely, English language obscures the awesomeness of some people, the best words only make a mockery of their virtues. This is why it is difficult to write words to properly convey the true feelings of gratitude in my heart for the blessing you have been to me

Suffice it to say that I holds nothing but reverence for you and all that you represent

Thank you for being such a huge blessing. Your love for God is enviable. For all the sunshine and laughter you bring, God bless you.

To you duo, May your kindness always be rewarded in thousands of folds. May your selflessness always return blessings to you in larger measures.

Lagosismyhome, time2win, Pedestals, This is a toast to all of you and others who give freely the richness of your minds. Every intelligent commentary is a product of mental work, including deep thinking, experience and past voracious reading. I learn daily from you all and I'm grateful. You may not understand how scarce and costly a robust thread like this is , until you visit some threads. Visit some threads and read your fellow youth--Nigerians, graduates. Read those threads and encounter the boldness of ignorance and its democratic spread among a large swathe of the youth space. You may return realising you're not entirely useless and foolish as you thought. You may realise that, by attracting brilliant associations, you may yet have substance in that big head of yours. A toast to my people here, young and old, rich and poor, foolish and wise--for in the end really, each group helps the other to find balance. And because we all switch from one group to the other at different times, the joke is on all of us!
