Hello house! Many thanks to all the Great Minds on here for all that you do.

Please, I have a question:

With regards to proving home ties, is it compulsory/important to have an official proof of study leave / support letter from my current place of work; because looking at most of the successful transcripts that have been posted here, its like most applicants don’t go with such documents.
Could the absence of such letter / documentation from my company harm my chances, or is it completely sufficient to tell the VO that I plan to return to my current place of work after my studies?

My current place of work (been there for 1 year 9 months) is an engineering firm, and it’s directly linked to my intended course of study (M.Sc. Mechanical Engineering).

Thanks bro!!!

Abdulrahmon68:

From Experience, Yes! you can use the Visa fee of B1/B2 to schedule appointment for F1 category. I remembered then when I sent them a mail in this regard I was told I could use it because is the same amount.

So when you get to the platform where you will book an appointment enter that MRV number and make sure you select F1 category not B1/B2 written on the MRV fee.

Also, make sure that the Visa fee has not exceeded one year since you bought it and you have not attended an interview with it before.

I hope am able to answer your question.

let me know if you need further information.

Cheers!

Visa Approved at the Lagos consulate: 15th of July

Before I share my successful transcript, I should share the one where I got denied. I was denied on June 10th.

Profile
PhD Sociology (Gender inequality)
71% Tuition waiver
Teaching Assistantship
Deficit: $7,434
Sponsor: Uncle
Mississippi State University

V.O: Pass your i20 and passport
V.O : You are going to MSU?
ME : Yes
V.O : How many schools did you apply into?
ME: 5 ( she told me to list them and I did)
V.O : Have you ever travelled out before ?
ME : No
V.O : what were you looking out for while making applications?
She didn’t use those exact words but I thought she asked me indirectly why I chose MSU. I went on and on about why I chose the school cos of my research interest and she was listening until I mentioned the prof I would be working with. She interrupted...
V.O : Are you talking about MSU?
ME : Yes
V.O : I am not asking you about a school in particular. I am asking you the criteria you looked out for in schools while you were making your applications. What were the facilities you looked out for?
( As a sociologist, I couldn’t think of any facility I would be needing. All schools have a form of research activity. We don’t use the lab or any equipment. I honestly didn’t understand what she wanted from me. I mumbled something about funding and research. I can’t remember the words I used exactly but it wasn’t very intelligent) I think I said something about the research carried out in the department.
V.O : funding ? That shouldn’t be a factor. All doctoral students get a funded position. Almost all doctoral students get funding. (She corrected the “All”)

ME: Well, funding was a deciding factor for me. I have friends who got admitted for a Phd but didn’t secure any form of funding. (I don’t know why I had to say that though)
V.O: You are not eligible for this visa bla bla

I walked away feeling like disappointed in myself because I know I could have done better. Applied for another interview the following day and got July 15. Interview was for 9am but I didn’t leave the house till 7am. I got stuck in traffic and I was still there till 10am. I entered with the last set of people to be interviewed around 12.

V.O : Pass your i20 and passport. What school are you going to?
ME: MSU
V.O : why MSU?
ME: I chose MSU because their sociology department is profound in my research interest which is gender inequality & stratification and they are also closely affiliated with the gender studies program of the school. Coincidentally, Prof Kelly Kimberly who I would be working with when I resume doubles as the director of the program. I am convinced this affiliation would help me to benefit from interdisciplinary teaching and research. The department also (VO cuts in)
V.O: How many schools did you apply into?
ME : 5
V.O : what will you do after getting this degree?
ME: I would come back to Nigeria to pick up a lecturing job as my career goal is to become a professor of sociology. I would also like to engage in lots of research work that is geared towards having a radical impact on gender policy in Nigeria.
V.O : your uncle is going to sponsor you?
ME: yes
V.O : what does he do ?
ME : He is the head of sales, public sector for bleep limited
V.O : what do they sell there?
ME : it’s like a micro finance bank where they give out loans.
( my heart was beating fast here because my SOA only had 3.1M and my deficit is Close to 2.8M)
V.O : your on-campus employment is what exactly?
ME : It’s a teaching assistantship.
V.O: I will be issuing your visa now bla bla bla

I kept saying thank you maybe about 5 times nd the guy started laughing. He told me to calm down and keep my i20 safe bla bla bla.

I learnt a lot from this platform and I am really grateful. Thanks to my love TheZed❤️, Soliph ( for her patience and care) and Tjay. Sorry for my long epistle lol

Congrats

The F1 approval rate will remain higher and steady until the new change come into effect. The number of B1/B2 visa the embassy issue has been slashed significantly due to Nigerians who abuse this visa. I am suspecting the US still want to maintain their overall target, hence, F1 visa rate will increase...at least, for now.
If you have been refused, learn the lesson and pursue again. A few days ago, we saw someone who got it at 6th attempt. You have been refused once or twice, and you're saying life is hard and unfair. You no know before?

For prospects, get your things right!
I continue to say it, avoid community colleges if you're looking at studying your first degree in the US. For people aspiring for advanced knowledge in their desire field, do go for Masters or Phd. Second degree is not advisable. Having another MS is great!

You will not achieve much in this life if you're not focus and willing to pay the price required for academic and career advancement. Not just the monetary aspect of the price but in terms of effort, quality time, and confidence you're willing to invest. If going to the US matters to you, focus on that and do it timely. I am now advising, it is not a crime to try top universities in the US. Na students wey get head like you dey go there. But don't let top schools gets into your head. It doesn't guarantee your success in life. I speak to the wise only!

You cannot succeed in life if you think you sabi it all. I have seen students with vain pride and ego on this forum. They don't know, but they will not ask questions. Once they mess up the application, they would then start asking useless questions. You dey do yourself!
What you don't know cannot help you; but what you know is useful only when you use it. Again, I speak to the wise only. If you don't understand something, ask questions.

The reason Oluwaseun Osewa created Nairaland is not because he wanted to make money, although that's part of the plan; the underlying reason is because he wanted Nigerians to share information in a way that would make two heads better than one. Have a partner in this journey; make a brother; make a sister, and make a friend. I call these people, a partner in F1 adventure. ASK QUESTIONs, but intelligent and reasonable questions.

Spring Prospects, start your application now. Carpe diem.
God bless!

Hi @fairheart, please I need your help. My visa got denied this morning and here is my transcript.

School: Indiana University of Pennsylvania
Session: Fall 2019
Venue: Lagos Embassy
Program: MSc Geography

V.O: Good morning
Reply: Good morning

Me: (this was my planned answer) I got to knownof the school through 2 acquaintances of mine (which wasn’t true) then she gave me the shocker....

Me: I actually didn’t prepare for this so I just kinda gave her two random names.

VO: she typed on her pic and was like she couldn’t find those names in her database...
Me: I was like that’s strange cos they actually studied there....

VO: Why do you wanna study Geography?
Me: (at this point, I was already destabilized as a result of the failed name ish) I gave an answer about my main area of concentration being environmental planning and how this would help checkmate the harmful excesses of urbanization. But wasn’t feeling the session again but just kept hoping.

VO: How many schools did you apply to?
Me: 3 schools, IUP, Western Illinois University and Texas Southern University....(although I applied to just one)

VO: Did you gain admission in all?
Me: Yes, I did

VO: What does he do?
Me: he works as the head of projects in a telecoms servicing company.

VO: Do you have an account statement?
Me: Yes, passed it. (She looked through and typed on her pic for a while)

VO: Sorry, you ain’t eligible for visa at this time.
And that was it.

Please I really need your advice..... if I reapply, how would I remedy the “how do you know about IUP” question and in what other ways can I make my general case more convincing.

Kindly help a brother.... thanks in anticipation...

Go with any valid document that can prove your case. If it is not required from you, you don't lose anything. But you may lose it all when it is demanded and you fail to produce it.

Hi @fairheart, please I need your help. My visa got denied this morning and here is my transcript.

I am not fairheart, I am Porpor. But feel like giving my own opinion. May I?

VO: How did you get to know the school, IUP?
Me: (this was my planned answer) I got to knownof the school through 2 acquaintances of mine (which wasn’t true) then she gave me the shocker....

Your job is to go there and take your visa and not wow the VO with names. Were you looking to impress her? Now it's okay. How did you get know about this school? Answer quite frankly and I'll help finetune it if it needs more input.

Revealing the exact same responses may help to identify if there was another fault here. Let's get the real picture and we'll help adjust it if need be.

VO: How many schools did you apply to?
Me: 3 schools, IUP, Western Illinois University and Texas Southern University....(although I applied to just one)

Watch it here! Here's another area you could have gotten a troubled time. If you chose to lie, it's entirely up to you. But be smart. Did you really profile the other schools.? You may need to do that as you prepare to refire. What's IUP? Let's be sure the schools you are claiming you applied is in the neighborhoodgrin

VO: Do you have an account statement?
Me: Yes, passed it. (She looked through and typed on her pic for a while)

It is instructive to observe that the VO allowed the session to progress to this level. How solid is your account? You need to be sure about this so it wouldn't be that funding was contributory.

VO: Sorry, you ain’t eligible for visa at this time.
And that was it.

Going forward, you need to cover more grounds and tighten up on the areas that were tested today. I can imagine how you feel right now. Don't be too hard on yourself for that. On a very bad day, such could happen and you won't see it coming. On a very good day, pretty soon, you're gonna smile back here to sing Hosannagrin
Cheers

Sorry two questions...

Does your school offer a course in Radiography or Radiotherapy?

I have checked online for schools offering the course and most offer it first as an associate degree before specialization... Going this route, would someone still be granted a study visa?

Sorry one last question?
What do they mean by prerequisite courses? Seen that most schools require some form of prerequisite courses before offering admission... Basic course like Maths, Physics and the confusing one Anatomy. As an international student, would the normal WAEC suffix or is there something else someone needs to know?

Thanks in advance for your response. I would also appreciate responses from others who might have valuable information.

P.s: I have written to some schools and still waiting for responses.

I tracked it now and the status has changed to "Issued" but I have not received any mail or SMS to that effect.

Do I need to wait for any notification message or can I go collect it now?

Congratulations!

But it is not over! There is no higher honour above going to a foreign land to study and excel in the midst of foreigners. I advice you to be like Joseph, Daniel, the 3 Hebrew boys, who trail-blazed and accomplished feat in foreign lands. All it takes it focus, commitment to academic excellence, and putting your education (the equipment and growth of your mind in your chosen field) above distractions that have taken over so many young people in our generation. If you do these, your name will be written in the book of history of men who do their best. And it wouldn't matter your family background.

Wish you the best!

First of all, Alhamdulillah (praise be to Allah) for making this a success. Honestly, my responses were nowhere near perfect. As a matter of fact, it still feels like a dream.

My mentor, Rasulullah (peace and blessings forever be upon him) taught me, "whoever does not appreciate fellow man, will never be able to appreciate God".

My appreciation goes to the following for being a part of my success story:

@Mudicua
Thanks for reviewing my proposed transcript here. Your suggestions worked in no small measure. I really appreciate. Wish you success in your career.

@Shawarma
Queen of queens. This lady and her humorous sense ehn! I hope you remember this line: I wish you all the best and I am sorry if I hurt your feelings. You were the one pursuing me upandan with your transcript grin
Well, you didn't hurt my feelings in any way. I asked for unalloyed review of my transcript, and you gave just that. I really appreciate because your comments made me return to my drawing table. Wish you success in all your endeavors.

Lastly, but not in anyway the least,
@fairheart
This King of Queen Shawarma... Hmm... I don't even know where or how to start appreciating you. Like it's usually said in my local parlance, "tí mo bá ní kí n ṣe àdúrà, epe má jabọ́".
What a down-to-earth man you are! I really appreciate your efforts and words of encouragement. May you continue to soar higher and higher in life. Thank you a trillion times.

Finally, my NL people. Thanks for everything. Your comments, answers to questions, etc have really been helpful. May we all continue to break grounds in our future endeavors!

To those with upcoming interviews, I wish you a seamless experience with positive outcome.

Will drop my transcript once I get my passport.

Cheers!

VO: How did you get to know the school, IUP?
Me: (this was my planned answer) I got to knownof the school through 2 acquaintances of mine (which wasn’t true) then she gave me the shocker....

VO: What are their surnames?

Please I really need your advice..... if I reapply, how would I remedy the “how do you know about IUP” question and in what other ways can I make my general case more convincing.

Kindly help a brother.... thanks in anticipation...

Sorry about the denial, but the only thing I can think of is WHY ARE YOU LYING WHEN YOU DONT HAVE TO? I mean why can’t you just answer truthfully as much as you can?

It’s quite sad.
