I started disliking Iwobi after he made a smelly gesture to a fellow African player....Very ffoollish boy. If it was white that did it all hell will let loose. But thats by the way. I am more interested in what he brings to the table which is a big gigantic NOTHING. To make things worse whenever he loses the ball he raises his hands like Ighalo and mouth like Kelechi. Its very infuriating.
if you hate him on off-football issue, that doesn't mean you shouldn't appreciate him small. whenever he loses the ball, he runs to win it back not that he will raise his hand . cut the guy some slack abeg

you have a point but nothing bad in giving him a chance. we are not blessed with good keepers right now . moreso. .he might be able to resurrect his club career if he can make good of his invite

Super Eagles GK situation

The future of our Goalkeeping rests on the likes of Francis Uzoho, Dele Sunday Alampasu, and Maduka Okoye if we take our eyes away from the local front.

Jonathan Osegoagbon Zaccala will grow into a solid option by the next U-20 WC.

Uzoho recently got loaned to Cypriot first division side, Omonia Nikosia who finished 5th last season. Hopefully he gets enough playing time and continues to improve. He is 20 and stands at 1.96m. Lad still boasts a WC record as one of two youngest GKs with a WC clean sheet. He can only get better.

Alampasu Sunday saw a lot of action for Feirense's U-23 side in the Portuguese U-23 league and hopefully can make the step up to play top flight football in the 2019/20 season. He is 22 now and stands at 1.99m. Remember he was rated Best U-17 GK in the world in 2013 with a golden gloves award. Alampasu is still as talented.

Okoye Mad' plays in Germany's Fourth Tier in the Regionalliga West for Fourtuna Dusseldorf II where he is undisputed No.1. Hopefully he can grow and make the step up also to a higher league as he is only 19 now. Will turn 20 by next month.

Zaccala is still just 17 and playing academy football for Triestina U-19. He is one for the future due to his obvious unreal talents between the sticks. Hopefully the next U-20 exposes him more and he would have made more career progress in terms of his development by then.

Rohr claimed we don't have players in Champions league clubs but that is not true. Kayode Olanrewaju's club plays regularly in the Champions League almost every season. Though we still have some players whose clubs are guaranteed of playing in the group stage. The likes of Sunday Odey, Brian Idowu, Tyrone Ebuehi and Henry Onyekuru are the only Nigerian guaranteed Champions league.

Iwobi Does Not Start Regularly For Arsenal, Leicester Not A 'Big' Club' - Rohr In Search Of A Midfielder To Replace Mikel

Published: July 18, 2019

Super Eagles manager Gernot Rohr has more or less confirmed that John Obi Mikel is set to call time on his international career with the Super Eagles after making 89 appearances.

The German revealed that he is searching for a top midfielder to replace the long-serving Nigeria international and the ideal candidate has to be playing for a top Champions League club.

Though Rohr has praised Ndidi and Iwobi for their performance in Egypt, the German noted that Leicester City are not among the top six clubs in the Premier League while the winger is not a guaranteed starter for Arsenal.

''We have to thank this great player for his career and all that he has done for Nigeria and even if he did not participate in the qualifiers we invited him to participate in this AFCON and he played his role of captain even if he did not play often, and for the team it was good to have him,'' Rohr told reporters.

He continued : ''It is true that we have to search for some midfielders, we have Ajayi, who was in the 25-man list but not in the 23, playing in England. He could play in defensive midfield.

''We have other young players but it depends on what they are doing in their clubs. We don't have players in Champions League clubs for example, we have good players but playing in second division in Germany and England.

''We only have two playing in England regularly but Alex Iwobi does not start all the time at Arsenal and Ndidi is at Leicester but it is not a very big club, so I think we have to work hard to find these players who can replace Obi Mikel.''

Obi Mikel started two group matches against Burundi and Madagascar and his Africa Cup of Nations ended after suffering a knee injury in the final group game.

Nigeria: Ighalo Gives Reason for Quitting Super Eagles

By Emmanuel Okogba

Leading goal scorer at the ongoing African Cup of Nations, Odion Ighalo has called time on his international career with the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

He announced his retirement following Nigeria's third-place victory over Tunisia on Wednesday. He reportedly informed coach Gernot Rohr of his decision before leaving to join his club in China immediately after the game.

"He had discussed his decision with the coach before the third-place match, saying that the constant abuse was taking a toll on his young family but he was advised to keep it under wraps for the moment. After the game, he gave his jersey as a souvenir to the coach, said his goodbyes and left," a source stated.

He made 35 appearances for Nigeria, scoring 16 goals.

He was also top scorer through the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers with seven goals.

What about scouting and discovering rough gems from the local leagues, lower division leagues, backwater leagues and academies scattered all over Europe. Surely we can find gems that can make the nation proud.

Just like Keshi did with the likes of Mba, Babatunde and Oshaniwa.

Rohr should not throw away Balogun because of one mistake after he has done well for the team in the past 3 years. He should extend invitation to him if he gets to play regularly for his club.

Kelechi Nwakali should get game time before he is invited to the national team. This is Nigeria's national team.

Rohr to overhaul Eagles as players reach end of international careers

Super Eagles’ Coach, Gernot Rohr will embark on a complete overhaul of his team if he retained his position as Nigeria’s manager.

The Franco/German is set to sit down with his employers, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), to evaluate his stewardship and decide on the way forward.

The NFF President, Amaju Pinnick recently said the federation would not sack the former Bordeaux coach adding, however, that the federation would help him to become more efficient.

With the retirement of Skipper John Obi Mikel, who is likely to be followed by the first-choice striker, Odion Ighalo, Rohr is looking to fill some of the positions that would be affected by the new development, as well as plugging the holes he noticed in the team at the African Nations Cup.

Apart from the retiring players, among those that they may no longer feature in Rohr’s team are Leon Balogun, Daniel Akpeyi, John Ogu, and Ikechukwu Ezenwa.

According to a source close to the coach, Rohr was disappointed by the performance of some of his trusted players, particularly Leon Balogun and Daniel Akpeyi and as such wants to have capable replacements before the World Cup qualifiers begin.

“Balogun and Ogu are senior citizens in the team, but they disappointed when they were given the opportunity to play against Madagascar.

“Balogun’s game has been going down since he relocated to England and at 30, the coach believes it is time to look at younger players.

“He is still certain for a good partner for Troost-Ekong as Kenneth Omeruo has proved to be unreliable, but the Chelsea star will still maintain his squad place pending when there is a better alternative.

“Ogu has not actually featured prominently in Rohr’s team, so the coach thinks it is time to let him go. He believes that given the opportunity, youngsters like Kelechi Nwakali, Osimhen and Dele Alampasu can plug the holes in the team.”

The source said the coach is desperately in search of good goalkeepers from within and outside Nigeria, adding that Rohr has encouraged the NFF to look at how to get Arsenal young goalkeeper, Arthur Okonkwo to pledge allegiance to the Super Eagles.

Fantastic news. Osimhen should keep propelling and not listen to Rohr with respect to bulking up. He should not let Rohr turn him into a mechanic.

Osimhen should keep working on his speed, tactical positioning, reading of the game and finishing skills. Not to bulk up. I believe he would learn more at Lille.

Just like Zaccala, Okonkwo will also have to wait and go through the U-20s. He is still just 17 like Zaccala. But yes, Okonkwo is one I hope we bag for the future of our goalie role. We need wicked quality at every turn.
