mediclife1987:It's really a sad situation in the country. You are right! Most doctors as of 2011 hardly think of leaving the country but it is so unfortunate that virtually every medical graduate now wants to leave . Not just doctors, but even nurses , radiographers, etc. A lot of people don't really understand the implications of health workers leaving a country. I know 3 doctors presently doing residency at LUTH writing final foreign exam to leave . I am sure there are still a lot more planning to leave. Who doesn't like sweet thing? The practice abroad is far fulfilling, lucrative and encouraging than what is obtainable in Nigeria. You won't blame doctors for leaving. Many were pushed to the wall and their effort not valued by the masses. Our leaders cannot even sacrifice their lives for half of Nigeria so why would these young ones do same after the suffering of medical school. When I see topic like this on nairaland I just smile and thank God that I took the decision to leave Nigeria after the present government conned Nigerians. Who said doctors are denied visa? Except there are errors in the application. It is hard to see a health worker with genuine intent and documents to go and work abroad denied visa on second application. Most of these developed countries are so eager to take health professionals from Nigeria to make up for their shortages.Just pass their exams and you are good to go. |

Tats:In fact, it doesn't make sense. Go to any public hospital in Nigeria, and you will see patients waiting for 4 hours to see a doctor, because there are very few doctors attending to very many patients. Doctor to patient ratio is like 1 to 3,000 in public hospitals in many Nigerian communities. In some private hospitals, patients cannot see a specialist immediately, because there are none on ground. They have to be put in a waiting list for like 2 weeks, to see one. Even when it comes to seeing a GP, they still have to wait for at least an hour. Yet, we have unemployed doctors in Nigeria, that can be hired to fill the gap, but those who should do so are not interested. May God save us all .. |

Sad to read this, however, why can't some of them team up to open their own clinic? |

As sad as this sounds it is the truth, especially for younger doctors fresh from NSYC and internship. Older doctors have either settled to residency, finished or in other career paths. There are actually fewer places for placement in govt hospitals for doctors which is a doctor's 1st choice, creating the need to work with underpaying private hospitals. About the brain drain thing, it has never been this worse, out of my set of about 20 docs that graduated only 30% are interested in staying and already in residency, the rest are already out, or on their way out. Some are just interested in residency to use the money and pay the expensive foreign exams, once they pass, they just resign and leave. In fact up to 85% resident doctors in govt hospitals have written 1 foreign exams or the other just waiting to leave. We probably may get to a point in future where trained specialists are extremely few. For information sake it takes about 6 to 12 years to train a specialist doctor after medical school, internship and nysc, and 80% of doctors churned out yearly are not interested because of rigorous training, even those interested are disenfranchised by stringent expensive exams with high failure rates and lack of placement. The real endangered set of doctors are these specialist doctors, once the current crop of consultants phase out, there will be serious problems, cos those that should replace them are leaving the country. Its already happening, my mum had breast issues and had to see a consultant general surgeon at National Hospital she was given a 4 months appointment, of course, I was able to intervene promptly, but most ppl will not be lucky enough to have doctors. I think urgent steps need to be taken to forestall this impending scarcity |

RichBoy247:wow,if only you knew the the amount of trouble these secondary school dropouts cause. Intact 80% of the patients doctor's see have been to these secondary school dropouts, how come they weren't cured. Would you like to be treated by a quack? the amount of bitterness and ignorance in your post is apalling. |

Even with the influx of docs going to Ukraine to study, how many of them are getting licences to practice in Nigeria? Ask your wife of the nos of them that pass. The last time, there was an uproar cos only about 30% of them passed the licensing exams in Nigeria. If I'm in a interview filled with Ukraine trained docs, I'll be jumping on my feet, cos I know I'll floor them easily. Your gov is trying to fool you into thinking there are surplus docs but now you have a doc doing the job of 10.
