My set finished with 232 docs in 2011, of all the nos of universities being opened how many have a licence to offer Medicine as a course? Even the mighty Uniben once had their licence withdrawn and you're talking about new universities. Even Unis like Igbinedion & Babcock go out affiliate teaching hospitals to teach their students. The minister has received you into thinking we have much doctors, but what we really have is a reduction in the nos of doctors being employed. In my time as a House Officer, we had 1s, 2nd & even 3rd batch occasionally with a total nos of about 300docs being enrolled for Internship, now most hospitals barely employ 50 for such positions, does that mean we have surplus doctors Even with the influx of docs going to Ukraine to study, how many of them are getting licences to practice in Nigeria? Ask your wife of the nos of them that pass. The last time, there was an uproar cos only about 30% of them passed the licensing exams in Nigeria. If I'm in a interview filled with Ukraine trained docs, I'll be jumping on my feet, cos I know I'll floor them easily. Your gov is trying to fool you into thinking there are surplus docs but now you have a doc doing the job of 10.

My dear I'm not trying to convince you so as not to appear self serving cos I really don't need your acceptance of my speech. The fact right now is even if the Gov raise our salaries to #1million/month, I assure you docs will still run away, cos we've never had it this bad b4. We've never had this amount of brazen hatred b4. Docs are now like an endangered specie here.

About docs not having the wherewithal to travel out, that's a blatant lie, if it were so, the nos of people writing PLAB wont have tripled in the last 2years. About docs not getting VISAs, there are docs that don't write their applications properly, I know of some of them. There's even a very popular Indian with a blog concerning docs that want to leave the shores of the country, he also applied and failed but he was given at the 2nd time. There's no doc I know that has been denied Visa twice. Not even now that I told you already that Visa stress has been relaxed for us by the former prime minister.

The reason why we are still shouting with people is the love for our country. I was earning 245k in 2014, but now I only earn 150k due to gimmicks the government has created called scarcity of jobs. The surplus you are referring to is very artificial and bogus. Infact most private hospitals now train school dropouts and put them on night duty to pose as doctors, hence creating the unemployment, not as if the no of Medical graduates has created or somerhing.

In my time, the no of docs leaving where fewer compared to those being churned out, now it has equaled, but I trust Nigerians, we always like to call others bluff, we'll wait till the nos of those leaving surpasses those being churned out b4 we do something about it.

Go to mist FMCs they're looking badly for resident doctors, even a Consultant told me very soon there'll be no more resident docs cos even those in the system are running away. LUTH CMD was furious around last year cos ALL the newly employed residents in a particular dept had absconded, leaving them to go through the stress of employing new ones who'll also run away after 6months of employment cheesy

I guess you like that pattern...

Okay I heard you.

They are unemployed because one person is doing the work of 10 in other sane countries.sometimes the government officials collects money and claim they have 100 doctors in their hospitals while in reality only 20 are employed.they now share the money almost themselves . That's why corruption is Is destroying our country

Re-read my post again and dont change anything, you will get what i mean. 10q

It's really a sad situation in the country. You are right! Most doctors as of 2011 hardly think of leaving the country but it is so unfortunate that virtually every medical graduate now wants to leave . Not just doctors, but even nurses , radiographers, etc. A lot of people don't really understand the implications of health workers leaving a country. I know 3 doctors presently doing residency at LUTH writing final foreign exam to leave . I am sure there are still a lot more planning to leave. Who doesn't like sweet thing? The practice abroad is far fulfilling, lucrative and encouraging than what is obtainable in Nigeria. You won't blame doctors for leaving. Many were pushed to the wall and their effort not valued by the masses. Our leaders cannot even sacrifice their lives for half of Nigeria so why would these young ones do same after the suffering of medical school. When I see topic like this on nairaland I just smile and thank God that I took the decision to leave Nigeria after the present government conned Nigerians. Who said doctors are denied visa? Except there are errors in the application. It is hard to see a health worker with genuine intent and documents to go and work abroad denied visa on second application. Most of these developed countries are so eager to take health professionals from Nigeria to make up for their shortages.Just pass their exams and you are good to go.

About 40 percent of medical doctors in Nigeria are are unemployed, Chairman, Federal Capital Territory branch of the Nigeria Medical Association, Ekpe Phillips, has said. Ekpe, a gynaecologist at the Nyanyan General Hospital said this in Abuja yesterday at a roundtable discussion on accountability for maternal health in Nigeria organized by the Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre, in Partnership with the National Human Rights Commission.

He said: “Many of them are employed by private hospitals that are not even paying them enough because of the economy. We don’t have enough doctors and the ones we have are not being utilized.

“The manpower issue is that government is not engaging the needed health personnel. We need to make the place conducive. As you build the primary healthcare centres, make accommodation available, electricity and make life conducive for the workers.” Executive Director, WARDC, Abiola Afolabi, said, maternal mortality could be successfully reduced “if we put women’s rights at the centre of the equation.”

In fact, it doesn't make sense. Go to any public hospital in Nigeria, and you will see patients waiting for 4 hours to see a doctor, because there are very few doctors attending to very many patients. Doctor to patient ratio is like 1 to 3,000 in public hospitals in many Nigerian communities.

In some private hospitals, patients cannot see a specialist immediately, because there are none on ground. They have to be put in a waiting list for like 2 weeks, to see one.

Even when it comes to seeing a GP, they still have to wait for at least an hour.

Yet, we have unemployed doctors in Nigeria, that can be hired to fill the gap, but those who should do so are not interested. May God save us all ..

Sad to read this, however, why can't some of them team up to open their own clinic?

As sad as this sounds it is the truth, especially for younger doctors fresh from NSYC and internship. Older doctors have either settled to residency, finished or in other career paths. There are actually fewer places for placement in govt hospitals for doctors which is a doctor's 1st choice, creating the need to work with underpaying private hospitals.

About the brain drain thing, it has never been this worse, out of my set of about 20 docs that graduated only 30% are interested in staying and already in residency, the rest are already out, or on their way out. Some are just interested in residency to use the money and pay the expensive foreign exams, once they pass, they just resign and leave. In fact up to 85% resident doctors in govt hospitals have written 1 foreign exams or the other just waiting to leave. We probably may get to a point in future where trained specialists are extremely few. For information sake it takes about 6 to 12 years to train a specialist doctor after medical school, internship and nysc, and 80% of doctors churned out yearly are not interested because of rigorous training, even those interested are disenfranchised by stringent expensive exams with high failure rates and lack of placement. The real endangered set of doctors are these specialist doctors, once the current crop of consultants phase out, there will be serious problems, cos those that should replace them are leaving the country. Its already happening, my mum had breast issues and had to see a consultant general surgeon at National Hospital she was given a 4 months appointment, of course, I was able to intervene promptly, but most ppl will not be lucky enough to have doctors.

I think urgent steps need to be taken to forestall this impending scarcity

Not a whole doctor. It's half doctor. Doctors are professionals just like bankers, engineers, lawyers, e.t.c. The work they do that makes them think they are helping God to maintain the humans the HE created is also being done by secondary school drop outs who are trained by auxiliary nurses in the neighbourhoods.
wow,if only you knew the the amount of trouble these secondary school dropouts cause. Intact 80% of the patients doctor's see have been to these secondary school dropouts, how come they weren't cured. Would you like to be treated by a quack?

the amount of bitterness and ignorance in your post is apalling.
