5 Reasons Why Eagles failed in Egypt – Dimeji Lawal

The 2019 Africa Cup of Nations has come and gone, but if Nigeria aims to clinch 2021 AFCON the work must start now.

Moreover, some of the factors which wholly dashed Super Eagles’ hope in 2019 AFCON hosted should be put under scrutiny:

Lack of Compactness
It is a belief of many that Nigeria is blessed with dynamic footballers. Yes, but individual skill without compact wins no team trophy,as a piece of broom never sweeps like a bunch. Lack of communication and inability to come together as a team cost them a lot.

Goal keeping problem
Super Eagles traveled to the tournament with three goalkeepers: Daniel Akpeyi, Ikechukwu Ezenwa and Francis Uzoho of which the former was chosen as a starter.

Self confidence, pass accuracy, quick saving and catching were absent in him.
Most especially against Algeria where he hide behind the free kick wall that later resulted to 94th-minute-winning goal that broke nation’s hearts.

Absence of Specialists
Creativity plays major role in conquering foes during competitions. Super Eagles found it difficult to produce free kick specialists, corner kick experts et all.
Inability to put round peg on the round hole is another failure.

Ball juggling midfielders
During Austin Jay Jay Okocha’s reign, his twists and turns often brought joy to every lover of football.

It is repugnant to scarcely see a strong Ball jugglers who can exhibit dexterity, distribute passes and mesmerize stubborn opponents among the present players.
This dragged Super Eagles’ image to dust at the just concluded AFCON.

Weak Attacking force
As fierce as a lion, so the attacking force should be. Had it been the anointed – top striker(Odion Ighalo) been looked hungrier he would have scored 8 or 10 times.

Current Super Eagles’attack doesn’t threaten opponents defence enough.

It was apparently glaring during Equatorial Guinea and Cameroon encounters where Nigeria was saved by the duo of Kenneth Omeruo and Troost Ekong respectively instead of attackers.
On a final note, coming third at a tournament which 24 teams competed in is never a curse.
Although we should always aim high and go for nothing less than gold.

Compactness, good goal keeping system, expertise at all angles, midfield restructuring and reliable attacking force remain factors for Super Eagles’ resurrection, former Eagles player Oladimeji Lawal told Brila FM.

FIFA specifically asked Nigeria to host the tournament after India and South Korea pulled out..
FIFA officials would be in Nigeria this week for inspection...
The security situation may posse a challenge, but then is there any country that has hosted a FIFA competition with no security threat?
Even Egypt that just hosted the AFCON isn't entirely safe in some parts..

it's a 16 nation tournament.. we can host it... make FG just provide the necessary funds...

Big Decision Awaits Chukwueze After International Duties With Nigeria

Big Decision Awaits Chukwueze After International Duties With Nigeria

The Super Eagles of Nigeria will be contended with a bronze medal as they ended their AFCON 2019 campaign with a win over Tunisia on Wednesday.

The players are expected to take a break from every football-related issue to regain their strength ahead of the upcoming season.

As for Samuel Chukwueze who had an impressive outing in Egypt, things could be a bit different for him as he needs to make a very important decision about his future.

The youngster's fame continues to gain steady recognition from top European clubs and he has a tough decision to make regarding his next club.

He was initially linked with a move to Liverpool and Manchester City before the start of the AFCON tournament but his display in Egypt, especially against South Africa, could see him attract more suitors before the end of the summer transfer window.

He, however, needs to choose between the two Premier League clubs which isn't an easy thing to do based on the quality of managers in command of both teams.

Should he decide to opt for the Citizens, he will likely face an uphill task of breaking into Guardiola's starting lineup as he'll be up against Riyad Mahrez, Leroy Sané and Raheem Sterling.

He will likely face the same challenge if he does choose Liverpool ahead of Citizens as he will need to overcome Sadio Mane in the race for a spot in Jurgen Klopp's list of untouchables.

Though Chukwueze's quality is never in doubt, he must take his time to consult his agent and former players before making one of the toughest decisions in his young career.

Since making his debut for the Super Eagles of Nigeria in 2018, Chukwueze has scored one goal but he's seen as the future of the team.

Just 4 stadiums are needed. I'd pick Abuja, Uyo, Kaduna and Lagos (TBS) .. I pick Kaduna cus quota system may be applied in selecting the host cities, otherwise it is port Harcourt for me...

They are probably favorites and are desperate for a trophy. Tornadoes did get to the finals two seasons ago but struggled during the season and are now relegated.
They will play in the CAFCC from the NNL.

Some people celebrated Shehu's injury forgetting that we really did not have back up. Some people were even celebrating Igahlo's injury during the third place match until Osihmen came in and could not fit in immediately. Awazeim tried in that position but there is so much one can do.

Now this is the conundrum why on earth would you bring square pegs to fit into round holes.

Please can someone explain.

What is more baffling is that IMO Aina played both position with consummate ease and composure. So why drop Aina for a Collins who was match rusty and average pace without football intelligence and returning from injury and an Awaziem that has no pace and is a makeshift RB.

I am BEWILDERED.

Considering the squad we had I would have played consistently Simon and Aina as our best options in the full and Wing back positions.

If I say Balo is a better defender than both of them ,I didn't mean in this afcon or this season that just ended ,so no need to even use that one self as we all know he is a bench warmer

On a normal day balogun is better than both

Our best defender in his afcon is omeruo

But me I am saying on a normal day balogun is better than them

I was disappointed by all three of them, l actually can not tell who is worse, Ekong that turned to police corporal booting the ball anyhow at the slightest hint of trouble doubt. Or Omeruo who couldn't deal with basic heading the ball. Balogun who became a primary schoolboy with silly errors.

Gbam.

Our young ones will step up simple

Ighalo retiring is good news to me. If he likes let him live like a recluse

Young does not equate to better and or comparable.

Victor Osimhen was totally woeful and a huge DISSAPOINTMENT.

I expected him to get on that pitch like a caged Lion seize his OPPORTUNITY l was filled with excitement and anticipation. Instead he was Running around like a headless chicken and couldn't impose himself on the games had zero physicality and it's not like he has mesmerising skills.

He has a long way to go hopefully as it seems he is going to French league one. Which is a lot tougher than the Belguim league he will have to STEP UP HIS GAME. Otherwise it will all go down like a flat tyre.

Chukwueze still has a lot to learn he would be wise to stay at Villareal and keep developing before going anywhere else.

We have a lot of young pretenders but nobody better clearly than the existing players. As it stands not one of the young pretenders can replace VICTOR Moses. They just do not have his quality YET.

So who are the young ones that can take the place of our existing players quality for quality like for like.

We should be asking u these questions, after all, u are one of the strong supporters of the great Rohr who never does no wrong. Why bench Aina for an uninventive poor Collins and why drop same Aina for a makeshift Awaziem? U have always defended his ineptness, so lets see how u scale this, or are u gonna circumvent it like u always do?

The Six Strikers Who Can Replace Physical Ighalo As Super Eagles Number 9

The Six Strikers Who Can Replace Physical Ighalo As Super Eagles Number 9

Following Nigeria's third place finish at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, striker Jude Odion Ighalo shocked Nigerian football faithful by announcing his international retirement after team captain John Mikel Obi announced his own expected retirement after 14 years service to the country.

Izuchukwu Okosi in this piece examines the best candidates from a lot to take up the role as the Eagles target another AFCON qualification in 2021 and the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

1. Victor Osimhen

Osimhen was only in action for 45 minutes at the just concluded AFCON, the third place final against Tunisia.

He will be a threat for defences especially in aerial duels.

Perhaps the record top scorer at the FIFA U-17 World Cup with 10 goals needs to add some more physicality to his game as alluded to by Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr.

2. Stephen Odey

The former MFM striker who has moved to Belgian Pro League champions KRC Genk from Swiss side FC Zurich scored 10 goals in 32 matches for his former club last season.

Odey is technically good, has got lethal shots in his arsenal and can offer some physical presence that Ighalo did.

3. Anthony Nwakaeme

The popular cliché in football that a player/team is as good as their last match continues to be a feature of this piece.

Trabzonspor of Turkey striker Anthony Nwakaeme scored 10 league goals in 27 matches last season and played against tough strikers in the competitive Turkish top flight.

Nwakaeme's strength and experience could be vital in the Eagles going forward.

4. Simy Nwankwo

Scoring 14 goals in 33 Serie B matches should not be scorned at and Nwankwo will be an invaluable part of the Super Eagles if Rohr trusts him enough.

The beanpole striker was in Nigeria's 2018 World Cup squad after showing great qualities in friendlies prior to the tournament but he has not played for the team afterwards.

5. Paul Onuachu

The FC Midtjylland of Denmark striker scored a memorable goal, a wonder strike within a minute against Egypt in an international friendly in March and perhaps sealed his place in Nigeria's AFCON squad.

The striker wasn't at his predatory best when he got his chance at the Nations Cup but nonetheless the talent is obvious. He scored 17 league goals in 30 league games last season.

6. Taiwo Awoniyi

The Liverpool-owned striker Taiwo Awoniyi is one of coach Imama Amapokobo's key players in the U-23 Eagles but he could also be an important member of the Super Eagles in few years time.

Verdict: The Super Eagles may have top strikers in their fold when the next AFCON hold in Cameroon in 2021 or at the FIFA World Cup in 2022 in Qatar.

However at the moment, in few months time when qualifiers begin before those big tournaments, our top picks in the absence of Ighalo would be the aforementioned for either their experience, goals return or physical attributes.

We are by no means saying other Nigerian players do not deserve a place in the team.

Next season could present us a player who takes the world by storm.

Rohr took Gabon to AFCON quarter finals. Rohr qualified Niger for the AFCON.
