So, it was a party organized by a Black meetup Group I belong to, in Southern California. It was held at a local Hilton hotel. The pool parties are held twice a year, with the next one being in September. Yay cheesy

The tickets cost between $25 for regular admission, and $40 for VIP. Reasonable prices, if you ask me. I came with 3 friends - a Nigerian lady, an African-American dude and an African-American woman. The Naija lady is an Ijaw from Delta.

The cool thing about the party is that two of Davido’s tracks - “If” and “Banana fall on you” were played by the DJ. When those tracks came on, everyone went wild lol. I told my friend that this is Nigerian song, and he was like “this is better than some AA hip hop” grin Most if the songs played were American obviously.

Then, when it came time to order food - the menu prices ranged from $11 to $14 - I was disappointed by the service. I and some others had to stand in line for almost 30 mins before a server came to take my order. I guess the hotel was short-staffed for that day

Anyway, I ordered the humus - a popular Arab delicacy - with a Red Bull. I didn’t want to order an alcoholic drink because I had to drive over half an hour back to my place. I didn’t want the cops to have a reason to pull me over, in case I engaged in “buzzed” driving. Lol

Overall, I would say the party was so much fun, I enjoyed myself, especially when the ladies were twerking in front of me cheesy I would try to make it to the September event as well.

Bad guy...that's how we roll. Buzzed driving leads to a ticket for DUI which is what I am scared AF....

I'm surprised that Davido's Fall is that popular on the West Coast...it's verrrrry popular in NYC.... and same....many don't know it's by a Nigerian.
On the next pool party....ehmmm..... are you going for the party?...or in your face twerking?

Back. Game changer

1. Most artistes try to get international fame by collaborating with foreign artistes/labels. Davido runs counter to that... left abroad to blow local.
Game changer

2... Fall has busted open the doors for Afrobeats to be big worldwide... taking it to main street.

Game Changer 3. Reverse of 1. Now foreign artistes are trying to collaborate with local artistes.

Bear in mind.... Game Changer has nothing to do with hits... but what was done to change the direction/spread of the music.

Let's not forget....on break waiting for Franknetter... remember him??

if he had started out as an artiste in America he would not have made it far

Nigeria is the source id his relevance as an artiste
so he has to be loyal to that "root"

afterall he was living in the USA as a teenager before coming back to try

Very true!

Even those AA that are now falling in love with his songs now would not have given him that same chance if he started out his artiste in the States.

mhmm

But given a choice between being an A list artiste in Africa and an A lisy artiste in the States

I don't think there is ANY artiste that would choose option A over B.
assuming they are mutually exclusive

What system? I've lived here 12 years and have not felt trapped by the system.

I often feel that the Nigerians who live here and yet rail against the "system" here are mostly those who either did not fully assimilate into the country, allow their inferiority complex to marginalize them or simply were not able to succeed in the system. My brother, cousins and i are making it quite well in corporate America and not a single one of us will contemplate spending one night in Nigeria if it can be helped. No system is perfect, but you cannot convince me that Nigeria holds any value to anyone who appreciates real living (as against merely existing).

Its easy to speak from your perch. You will always have an American passport to allow you to escape back to the "trap" you despise once things get bent out of shape for you in Nigeria. For what its worth, will you give up your US citizenship? If not, why not?

I was thinking about the tit for tat here as i drove home from work. I thought a lot about what home meant. Then it hit me - home is where i have peace, security, justice. Home is where i know i can drive at night, alone, on impulse, and have zero fear of armed robbers or area boys or bad roads. Home is going back to my abode, knowing i won't have to struggle to find kerosine to cook, that i won't need candles as my source of light, that i will turn on the tap and water will flow and that my biggest problem would be what to cook rather than if i will get to eat or not. Yes, there is racism here... but so what, its not like my black Nigerian brother did any better for me. The average 18-year old American kid can take a backpack, pick a ticket to anywhere in Europe and fly out... with nothing but a few dollars in their pocket. In Nigeria, successful middle class adults have to provide tax forms, letters from employer, return tickets home, bank account information, invitation letters, cram visa interview questions and answer + 7 day fasting and prayer, just to spend a few days in South Africa of all places. My brother... America isn't perfect, but i'm sure glad i live here not in Lagos.

You don talk am finish
