He did not serve for free.
He was paid better than many Nigerians will ever be.
Since he was deserted by his children, it is obvious that the man is irresponsible
with family and money affairs.

He was paid for his work ...

My thoughts are in sync with yours on this. People sometimes get carried away with their salaries, forgetting that retirement and retrenchment is a possibility. That is why it is good to make hay while the sun shines. He also should have come to terms that he can't have his cake and eat it, that would have put him on his Toes.

Exactly, a pointer as to why his family abandoned him.

Thank heaven Buhari, Babagida, Abdulsalami, Obasanjo & Buhari for the second time are still alive, they can do something to help him.
Even Aisha after eating the meal prepared by this man all this years will now want to pretend as if she doesn't know the man.

the reason some people embezzle when they have opportunity. They dont want to suffer like this after serving with honesty and loyalty

Once again. Yet again. Remember. Poverty or wealth are mental states. It has nothing to do with proximity to or access to riches or resources.

This man is a poster child (no pun intended) for the average Nigerian. The inability to generate wealth despite apparently living in the midst of riches and the inability to terra form his environment by being a generator and transmitter of value.

Make hay while the sun shines. He could have opened a restaurant after retiring.
With which money? Didn't you see that his highest salary was 25k.
I find it stunning that some people serving presidents are this poorly paid.
His greatest undoing however is that he wasn't enlightened. He had a very powerful social network, but didn't know how to utilise it cos of his poor enlightenment.

I actually didn't read the story..... I just dashed to read comments and you explicitly spoke my mind. God bless you. He was employed, paid handsomely, connected to an extent. What do Nigerians want now? To open a restaurant for him? We have too many pressing issues than this one jawe

very logical and possibly true. While i know the oppressive nature of our environment, am quite sure life would have thrown some chances his way at certain times but its either he didnt utilize his chances well in his prime and was reckless with the opportunities he had.

Lesson to those that life throws such opportunities at " make hay when the sun is shining"

1.This is why it is good to be self reliant
2. Think of how to establish something aside the monthly salary earned by salary workers.
3. Teach your children what you know how
This man made the mastake of not taken into consideration the above three points.
All what this man how to cook could have made him a millionaire, if he had established at least a food joint for himself, his children if educated would have improve upon his joint to become a big eatery such as Mr. Biggs etc.
