Op... I share in your experience .. Some 7 years ago.. I was made to teach agriculture from. Js1 to ss3.. A subject I last learnt in 1997 to 99.i also taught commerce and Econs ss1 to ss3.. All for peanuts.. I worked just a month before resignation for a better job..

The thing is this.. Op... You need to show some urgency to leave that job by double your job application efforts.trust me.. You will get another Better job... If I want a new job.. I make getting a new job a job.. By dedicating at least 3 hrs a day surfing the internet.

By the way.. Are you aware that... Persons who do kpom kpom work earn at least 1.5k to 3k daily?? Way more than those who teach.. Now... You don't have to do odd jobs for ever.. You do for a while to save up while you keep applying for other jobs. Any one that comes first.. Either you saved enough for a business or a better job comes.
I did kpom kpom work with a contractor at gsk agbara... But If you see me.. I leave home dressing coporate and carry laptop brief like am going to office. After the job.. I clean up and head home. Packaging.. I worked in bakery... I worked in a nylon production company.. I worked in hotels.. Bro.. Believe me.. It just keeps getting better and every previous jobs leads to a better one..

On another note.. Employers or business men who carry religion on their head are the worst to work with or do business with.. Any one that works in the financial sector will confirm this..

In all... It will be well with you bro... But up your game... Resign and think outside the box..

Now.. A learning curve from my experience is this.. Any company that delays or owes salary or pays part is a red flag and a sign that you should start planning on your exit.. Cos it gets worse from there..

Peace.

So true Sir. I agree with you

I ran away fŕom teaching job very very long ago. A job that pays nothing but takes everything away from you.

You cannot dress anyhow to school but at the end of several months, you do not earn what is enough to replace your tattered clothes and worn-out shoes.

I may chose to go to my current place of work in bathroom slippers, nobody challenges me. Yet I earn monthly pay of around 6 figures.

Better to do 'alabaru' at Oyingbo than all these nonsense private school teaching jobs

I wish seun could bring this to front page. I have read so many comments on how teachers are being treated but in my case and other people , I know around me, they do well in the teaching profession. If u are a good teacher u wont have any problem. I for one, I dont take teaching as a part time job. I take it as a full time job. I put my mind to it, affect lives and get paid. I may not be able to list my achievements here but there is no month i dont go home with 400k. Teaching is the best thing that has ever happened to me

I looked back at the beginning of this year, precisely 14th January 2019 when I started working at a private primary school. Three weeks later, I was told that I had to be taking two primary five students extra lessons after closing (3pm), and the pay was 1k each. With my monthly salary which was 13,000 added to the "1k" each makes 15 thousand.

You would think I earned 13k for three months abi! No I didn't. The first salary I got was the half of 13k. The woman just called the staff on the 28th of January and gave me 6.5k. I had no idea what was going on and I thought she was going to balance up at the beginning of February just like she said while addressing us but it was a lie. it was at the end of the term, the third month April, that I got to know I am being ripped off. She said she was going to pay 5000 naira at the end of the term as salary because school opened for just 10 days. It was the greatest shock of my life. A graduate, a grown up man like me, taking 5000 naira home!!
I wanted to leave but I couldn't because I wouldn't be paid for the common entrance lesson and I had not gotten any other opportunities elsewhere.

Sometimes in early February, She called me that I would be handling primary 5 Common entrance lessons which is meant to hold every Saturday and at the end of the third term the money will be shared between Me, a staff that partners me and the proprietress. She said the money will be shared 60%(I and another man) to 40%(the proprietress). The formula was very unfair and strange to me. The sharing formula seemed very strange to me and I challenged it but she enforced it.

Fast forward to early this month, precisely 3rd of July, the proprietress started acting strange and insulting all the workers and all that. The following week she sent one of the oldest staff by to inquire what will be the staff reaction if they are not paid at the end if the term. The staff said they won't agree to such and some even threaten various actions. Fast forward to Thursday 25th of July, vacation day. the woman started up a plethora of complaints deliberately she said she was going to pay 4000 as July salary. The same thing she did at the end of second term. At the end she ended up not paying a dime. She didn't pay any of us. Not even the common entrance lesson which made me stay.

I cried and stayed inside throughout Friday. I had a deep thinking, with my academic background! Was it that I didn't know my worth? with all my struggles to be successful academically I am now slaving in one private school for a paltry sum of 15k, money wey I no fit cope with as an undergraduate! Money wey be say no reach my NYSC allawe!
I really feel for graduates going through phases like this. I really feel for graduates teaching at private schools. I pray better days finds you and I soon.

If you have no strong network to almost guarantee you a good job, why bother going to university for four years (+ strike time etc) and spend so much money to end up with a bizarre job?
Is it not better to go to a technical school or vocational centre/college to get quality City & Guilds level skills that are scarce in a technical area such as precision welding, masonry, woodworking, electrical/wiring, mechanical engineering, refrigeration etc? Will getting a job not be easier and even been an employer in due course
Until more people learn to make informed choices instead of just following the crowd they will continue to shortchange themselves like this your story.

Meanwhile, is there no law about working and not being paid

Teachers are advance slaves in 80% of private second/primary schools in the country.
In order not to be counted as jobless that is why
most graduates accept the job.
Op. should look for an alternative ASAP.

Wow.. I feel you bro.. Personally..i advice people to quit teaching and take up another job.. Even if it's contract banking job.. At least. It pays better.. And with time.. If you succeed.. You become a full staff... Even if you don't.. Along the job.. You would have met good contacts who could help out.. Contract bank jobs are even easy to get.. Give it a try bro.

Absolutely no reason to lie. I wouldn't have dignified your post with a response but for the young man who is disillusioned. I want him to know that one can build a career in the education industry if you so wish. Tbh with you, had it been someone told me I will end up being a teacher with a convincing prophecy and struggling for home tutorial to boost up, I will quit education after SSCE and dive into business.
I once teach in a private primary school were I was earning 15k, taking primary 1 to 5 and sometimes JSS1, all of them inside a class, the owner told me he will be helping me with some subjects but it was a ruse.

Better days ahead
my dear it's not a curse, there are many things to do with that certificate ,the course is broad, it's just money to finance ideas.

Take the following steps if your 30yrs and below .

Apply to any of these microfinance banks as a loan officer asap.

Accion
Abmfb
Lapo
Microcred/baoba
Primera
''''''::::::::
none of these companies pay less than 50k.

You will gain valuable experience and be able to move to other bigger coys. But your teaching experience won't do you any good and you would get tired eventually

Nb, these companies recruit evey six months and staff turn over is very low in n that sector.

Ultimately,fast and pray

All will be well.
