RiyadhGoddess:Your write up is great and eloquent. Nice advice not only for the OP but for the general folks out there. We all have to discover our inner self worth and pursue that dream. That’s what builds a great nation. |

petux:Why isn't she serious? Have ever bothered whether there's an underlying problem? She might have a learning disability. Or may just be a slow learner. That's how some people are wired. What you need is patience. I was an average student in secondary school but finished with 5 a's and 2 C's in both WAEC and GCE. Keep trying this and that. Let her learn a trade while she's at home until she gains admission. She can even start a business and be making good cash. You'd be surprised she may shine. And most importantly, love her unconditionally despite her shortcomings. That's the greatest thing you can do for her, the very best thing you can do for her! |

I think you guys failed to correct her on time. its an habit she developed from a very young age maybe during her early days in secondary school and at this age i don't think there is anything you and your family can do about it only if she decides to change her attitude towards school on her own. So i will suggest you advice her on doing other things aside from going to school maybe developing a skills. writing is ok since she loves literature or better still enrol her in a good vocational sch. |

petux:I sympathize with you on your predicament and I commend you for being actively interested in the academic improvement of your sister. If many Nigerians had siblings like you while growing up they would likely have gone farther in life. First and foremost, what kind of school does she attend? A low budget private school or a state government school? If it is a standard private school in which the academic performances of her peers there are way beyond hers then there is a serious problem on ground. Also, what kind of friends does she keep? If the school she attends is not good then I will suggest that you enroll her in the best tutorial center in that area and try to be in touch with the kind of friends she keeps there. Encourage them to carry each other along and try to also inquire about their performances. Another suggestion I will make is that you and your mom should make her understand the importance of being serious with life at a young age. You can also try out some punitive/reward measures in other to force her to study whether or not she feels like it. I have a friend that had F9 in English about 10 years ago. After attending one of the best tutorials in our area and with determination, he had A1 in that same English the following year. Above all don't give up on her. |

Plenty bad advice dey this thread sha.. 1. Some saying nobody is dull, some people are dull. No long thing about that. You sister may be genetically dull. 2. Saying she doesnt have interest in certain things is the reason why she isnt passing is also crap. 6 F9s out of 9 is an abysmal performance and irrespective of your interests, you should be able to study and get even an C6. Any other advice is crap. 3 Your sister is either one of the following, lazy, unmotivated and unprepared for the future. Im sure she is the last born. Na so them dey do. Since she reads some books i think she is just lazy. Even for academically upstanding students, studying can be difficult at times and requires sacrifice. Even geniuses sacrifice their time and energy in studying. Im going to live you with this small advice. You sister needs to demonstrate sacrifice in her efforts. and she is obviously too comfortable to appreciate that. What will happen is she fails? Will food stop? Will Daddy bring cane and flog her? Will pocket money stop? I guess the answer is No. So why should she. Some kids are Natural Starters. They see a future and it motivates them. Your sister does not. So you have to bring that reality to her. But if your parents are unwilling to make the efforts. Then dont stress yourself. |

I'm interested in this. My younger sister has the same issue. She's currently 18 and just got promoted to JS3. (on merit) Everyone is tired. Like, literally tired. We're nit motivated anymore. I'm not going to say she's dull cos she can definitely tell what is wrong from right. But mehn.. She's not smart academically. She's changed school countless times cos of this embarrassing issue. Even her junior mates are writing Jamb. I don't even know what she likes or loves to do.. Probably i could chanel my energy from there. Guys... What do you advise abeg. |

petux:hi poster. I think your sister is not an academic person. if you introduce me to her I can help her out. what she needs is just to understand basic maths and English. Then she should be asked what she loves (in terms of skills) and be honed in it. she would need the English to communicate with customers and basic arithmetic to calculate sales money. Don't look down on her. we can work on her. |

She passed three Subjects without studying and yet you call her dull. What will you call her if she had studied well and yet passed only three subjects? Ehh! When she gets Nine F9 you will understand what it means to be dull. My dear, there is nothing wrong with your sister. She is not interested in studying that all. Please don't call her dull again. There are people that have Nine F9 in school, but today, they are CEO's and MD's of companies. Find out what she is interested in, and help her build herself. |

So, because she finds "formal" education tedious, you automatically concluded she is dull... Nah. This is why we keep getting it wrong in this country. Watch how dumb ones will come up with spiritual attachments... Your sister should be exposed to the kind of education she easily fancies... |

@petux It looks like she wants to suffer when she’s old. She better take school serious or learn a trade properly else prepare to regret and suffer Rich or average people don’t have this kind of mentality |

Not everyone is book smart. The white man noticed the situation recently and expanded their definition of intelligence. At least if one doesn’t fall into book smart-intelligence there are many more they can try their hands at and improve in. My benchmark for intelligence is very low: can an animal eat when hungry? If it can then it can get trained. In the real world, the real dog-eat-dog world, that is all which matters and nothing else. Humans just bleeped up and made life more difficult than necessary. |

Mitocyan: ![]() I was average. If you wanted to know the best 10 students in my class, I'm sure I wans't one of them. I was blown away when I checked my scores. My cousin was filled with so much joy that he hugged me. Some of my classmates wondered why I was still studying for WAEC after getting such marks. Some saw me as strange ![]() |

Na so e dey easy to sit down, carry book and start reading... Make we no lie ourself, e hard big time... If truly she wan read, she go find out herself one day.. And if she no wan read, no force her, don't let her sole aim of reading to be because u guyz asked her to read.. Reading is more than "let me read because i want to pass my exam", we all have something in us, the primary aim of reading is to allow us to know more. Abeg, she is not dull... If she is, she won't pick up a novel |

petux:She doesn't need to attend university before she can be successful..she can speak and write well so let her go learn a lucrative skill for 2 to 3 years and you'll be glad she did...Too many graduates in the street and give them a second chance 95% will go for a skill. |

grandstar:Lool it still doesn't mean you are average. It just means you went to a very good school or you were in a class filled with very good students. My department was one of the most competitive department in my university (a fedral university in south west) and out of over 80 students, I don't think up to 5 people had more than 5 As in their O level. So you were not an average student. |
