Secret Military Cemetery Concealing Over 1,000 Dead Nigerian Soldiers In Borno – Wall Street Journal

Over 1,000 Nigerian soldiers killed by the Boko Haram insurgents have been buried unceremoniously in a secret graveyard at Maimalari town in Borno State, a report by America’s Wall Street Journal disclosed.


“The bodies of these dead soldiers are laid by flashlight into trenches dug by infantrymen or local villagers who are usually paid a few dollars per shift,” the report said.


Also, according to some anonymous Nigerian soldiers, diplomats and a senior government official, after dark, the bodies of these soldiers are covertly transported from a mortuary that at times gets so crowded and the corpses are delivered by truck.


“Several of my comrades were buried in unmarked graves at night,” said a soldier from the Maimalari barracks, where more than 1,000 soldiers are based.


“They are dying and being deleted from history.”

The secret graveyard at Maimalari isn’t the only one in Nigeria’s troubled northeast, the senior government official said.


“…The sprawling secret graveyard in Maiduguri and an official cemetery at the base, the operational command for the northeastern front in Borno State, now hold the bodies of at least 1,000 soldiers killed since the terror groups began an offensive last summer, according to soldiers and military officials—some of whom estimated a far higher death toll,” the report said.


As the secret cemetery at the Maimalari barracks grows, the military has expanded the site into neighbouring fields.


“The farmland has been fenced off so they can bury the forces,” said Sarah James, a 50-year-old farmer whose husband is a retired soldier.


The reality is that Africa’s largest land force—a U.S. counterterrorism ally—is struggling against an insurgency that first flared a decade ago and is now rejuvenated by Islamic State and the return of fighters from Libya, Syria and Iraq.

The insurgents now control hundreds of square miles of territory across four countries around the Lake Chad basin, a of Africa where U.S., U.K. and French militaries have bases or offer special-forces training.

Almost all the oil producing African countries are suffering from one crisis or the other. Someone somewhere must be benefiting from these crisis.

We shall investigate one day all senior officers will face what that Sambo is facing today tell us why trained soldiers can't face this terrorist worst of it you send them to battle unprepared. I hope these Generals leave room to face court-martial.
We waste human resources and materials. Obasanjo must be very brave and smart to finish them off in 2007. Buhari and chief of general staff must account for each death.

When a grave yard becomes secret for the army's is for a reason, because they know what they are plotting.

Let them give out the name of the death soldiers to envelope their secret if not for the reason best known for our Fulani military head.

Believe it or not, a tribal and religious plot is going on in the army.

It's obviously where they dumped the bodies of soldiers they declared MIAs and those that deserted according to their lying desk. Too bad.

Oh well hopefully they at least inform families and pay what ever is owed them. Until opperational tactics are made the soldiers will be mowed down. Its their waste and foolishness that prolong war getting troops killed. 

• Eliminate security votes. Budget that money transparently to military to avoid waste and fraud. They could have bought all the weapons they wanted without draining excess crude account. 

• Second focus resources on DICON and consider changing their role. The private sector can produce all the weapons effectively. 

• Third secure border and focus on economy of region.

ISWAP is controlling territory in lake chad. In one article its said they have functional tax system and public projects. The main reason for that is because Nigerian military made business impossible so terrorists facilitated trade. The solution to some problems are counter intuitive.

Western military officials say the Nigerian army is stretched so thin that its top brass are no longer talking seriously about defeating the insurgency, merely containing it.
