The Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, in Osun State has been thrown to mourning following the death of a student identified as Opeyemi Grace Dara.

The deceased who was in the Department of English and Literature was said to have committed suicide after a dose of lethal substance popularly known as snipper.

Although the details of the incident were still sketchy, our correspondent learnt that she took her life following the poor academic performance.

But the authorities of the institution confirmed that the deceased committed suicide due to depression occasioned by poor academic records.

A copy of her academic records obtained from her page on the school portal indicated that she had many outstanding courses.

She was said to be having five outstanding courses and 12 Special Electives.

A source said, “A student in the Department of English and Literature at OAU in Ile-Ife, Opeyemi Grace Dara, whose set finished their final year exams just last semester has committed suicide through the consumption of the notorious snipper on Friday. She was in the last graduating set; however, she had some outstanding courses. The department in mourning mood.”

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of OAU, Segun Olanrewaju, confirmed the incident to our correspondent and promised that the institution would investigate the incident and make its findings public.

He also warned students against taking their lives because of poor academic performance.

Its not easy to have extra year in school but she shouldnt have taken her life na. I spent 2 extra tears in school but never contemplated suicide.

It seems like you guys derive pleasure from insulting other people who are innocently giving their own opinions. What's more surprising is that your comment actually makes no sense (even when we try to ignore the insults) while his own is likely to prevent more people from following the same path of suicide!

Doesn't dispute the fact that it's still trash in most areas. I struggled for years just to be admitted to uni in Nigeria, only for me to now be well into completing my degree from a reputable med school in Europe. Nigeria breaks you with the stupid educational system and not everyone is strong enough to take such pain.

You don't know what she went through, and I don't know either. But I have friends still studying in Nigeria and some of my siblings did too, from what I experienced, it was absolute rubbish.

Now wetin you gain. Better to be a drop out , than live in hell..

I have said before that the way children now troop to University is not too good. In the couple of Universities I have visited I discovered that we noe have many teenagers in the University Campus. These Kids are not matured yet to handle emotions that is accompanied with an eexposure to University environment. If your child graduates from Secondary school, let him or her learn one or two skills before going to the University if he or she is still far below 18 years of age.

Those days in school there was this girl that everybody sees as dullard, some ladies taunt her with the problem of finding it difficult to read and comprehend. Today the same girl is married to a very successful man and controls chains of Businesses in Lagos, Abuja and Enugu.

May Her soul rest in peace
If only she knew that most successful men and women in the world are either drop out or had no form of formal education. The Reality of life after school is far beyond any Certificate
