You are welcome bro. These children master the basics though from primary school. Mathematics is an art. There are ways to solve basic operations of division, multiplication and the likes in less than 10 seconds and less than 5 seconds with constant practice. These children do not battle with those basics anymore. They are first of all, a walking calculator. So, if they are solving a question and they have to multiply something in the process, they just write the answer. They do not start doing normal multiplication or division like most people would do

I use all manner of techniques but never really used memory palace. Sometimes, I form an imaginary story. I basically use Encoding,Memory Address method by attaching a tag to each info, Linking method and comedy to remember serious stuffs.

Cowbell Mathematics competition, such fond memories. I remember my time when I went for the Senior Competition in SS2. Then it was just written Exams at each state level. I finished 3rd in Lagos State then, losing out to the 1st Prize by just 3 marks. I couldn't proceed to the National level cos they changed the rule that year, that only the winner at each State level will proceed to the National unlike before when it was 1st to 3rd. I cried my ass off but was compensated by 10k prize money, lots of branded Cowbell notebooks, pens and a long stack of powdered milk.

I don't even remember where the guy that won came from but I was from Ojo LG but my school was a Private school with the headquarter in FESTAC and I had my exam at Mile 2, Amuwo Odofin Senior High school, I think. Can't remember too clearly again. People that know me can clearly demystify my moniker by now with this expose.

I thought I was a guru in current affairs but with the formula you have here, I weak. My strength was in geography, political science, nation's historical moments and the Nobel prize. It was fun there reading voraciously as I prepared. I started the Nobel prize research when a man was asked who won the first Nobel prize in physics (he later walked away with a million naira). Wahlai talai! Entertainment was my weakest link. Anytime a question from there comes up, I don't say a word. Regarding sports, I even became a fan of tennis so as to keep up with the program and memorised winners of different grand slams. For you to have sat near Aroma 9 years' ago, then truly, you've teyd in the game. I watched the game that night and was ecstatic for Aroma and his success. There was a recent one (when it was still aired) that the dude fell to 250K from 5M. Forgotten the question but he already had a patent for a product. Too intelligent to have lost.

I didn't want to check for China so as not to ruin my mood.

Most teachers cannot prepare their students for olympiads so they prefer to focus on the one they can handle which is cowbellpedia. I've observed this both from first hand and second hand experiences.

Besides the top countries in the IMO have kids who start preparing for it from primary school and they usually have a lot more resources and support given to them.

So I don't really consider it a shame based on the state of Nigeria.

I forgot.... I also memorized all past Nobel prize winners per category and so many other things. I had USA at my finger tips cos they too like USA. Lol. 9 years ago, Aroma's recording was the 4th. I had entered the studio for the 2nd recording but failed to win fastest finger for audience. So, I was asked to wait for the 4th show to try again. The 4th show started around 7pm. He was so nervous while he was waiting to be taken in for Fastest Finger to determine who gets to the hot seat. Whenever he gets nervous, he goes to puff. Aroma's winning question was a walk in the park for me. He was asked about Maathai Wangari. I think he was asked about the category she won and not even the year. He had to call his cousin. A couple of Northern schools (very few) made a top 17 Nationwide. If you look at the names we'll, most of those candidates are not Northerners. Moreover, if a Northerner qualifies on merit, there is no problem with that now and no one will question that. Quota system is terrible. Let me give you a good example. There is this girl called Osasere from PH. She was at the finals of the Junior category 2 years ago. In this written examination, she scored 92%.Guess what? She won't be part of the quiz show despite her scores. Whereas, more than 10/15 people who scored less than her will make the show. Does that make sense?? Her 92 did not meet up with top 17 nationwide and she was not the state champion for her state as someone scored around 98% in same state. There is this other boy called Ezekiel Enoch who was also part of the finals 2 years ago. He scored 88% in the national exams this time around but because he wrote from Ogun state where the competition is stiff, he did not make it. More than 6 people scored better than him in the state. Students from Ota Total Academy, Ambassadors etc scored better than him and so, no game show. It is difficult to write the exam in Lagos, Rivers, Ogun, Osun, Abia, Abuja etc because you may score 94% and never make it to the game show. Is that not unfair? Why should someone who scored 44% make the game show and someone who scored 92% did not make the game show?The quota system is rubbish to be sincere. Do you have an idea of the kind of efforts that must have been put in to score 92%?

In my set of about 150 students, we currently have about 30 Medical Doctors of which about 5 are Professors not only in Nigeria but abroad. This is not to mention the large number of Engineers and Computer scientists. In my days, we did Additional Mathematics that had the terrifying red textbook by Godman and Talbert and not Further Mathematics.

Just to give you a hint of the school for you to know if it was a local school and therefore if the person was a local champion, the immediate past governor of Lagos state was my senior in secondary school.

The written exams already gave all states a chance to participate. Why should those who now failed from other states qualify ahead of other high scoring candidates from another state. Those children should not have written in Ogun, Rivers and Co. Had it been that their school had branches in other states, they should just have gone there to write. So sad to see someone scoring above 90% and no qualification.

My son's school has started preparing him and his group for the senior edition since last year September. He will be in SS2 by September. He did the junior category last year but did not make the finals. There was no holiday for him last year as he was kept in school for preparation. His school was entering for the first time. So it was a learning curve for them.

Lmao Frankly, I experienced same thing while growing up; I was my dad's favourite because of his love for mathematics.
I started going down when I got into secondary school and it became worse when I had my first GF. I stopped anything academics and put everything into our relationship. A big fool I was then to think love is real.

It took me a couple of years to recover from both heartbreak and academics. At a point my parents thought 'village people' had taken away my brain, not knowing it's because of a girl and I couldn't open up to them( you know naija parents na).
