I do not really understand her issue.

Someone played politics with her and she is now a supervisor. This should be a good thing right?

She is tensed on how to lead because she is a talkative and it has been used against her in the past. This isn't rocket science, stop talking too much. grin

Leadership is not a skill you learn or develop, it's inborn.
My advice is that every leader has a style so use yours and don't join the crowd.

Office politics is the most dangerous to get involved in.

Make your rules or principle known to all and keep to it. Don't be seen as a weak leader. But at the same time, be gentle and accommodating. Issue warnings and query after two strikes. Make sure that your warnings are always in black and white just in case someone want to put you in trouble.
If you want to progress often, always be available. Your bosses talks good of someone who is always available and servicable(if there is a word like that).

Delegate responsibilities to your subordinates. Make sure that everyone is carried along while doing that and always be on the lookout for exceptional qualities and always reward hard work.

You will live longer, if you can navigate around office politics.

But the elephant in the room is if you understood what office politics is all about...

As for your superiors, never be seen to be in a particular camp.

And stop Talking too much.....

Don't change who you are apart from the talkative aspect of who you are. Remain friendly with those under you and go out for lunch with them. Pay attention to their demure. Ask questions when their faces are not that bright. Show concern. Ask after their families (I discovered that people feel part of you when u enquire about their families and even drop one or two naira for them to buy things like biscuit, etc for their kids).

When it come to challenges at work, even if you have the ideas on how to solve them, intentionally ask them for their opinions and of course chip in yours...

Well outlined. As an ICT person, having close buddies at work doesn't stop me from effecting the company's policy as regards my duties on them. We joke and play but it ends there when it has to do with applying the necessary restrictions as spelt out. Drawing the line is sacrosanct, because you are paid to do a job. I sometimes have to limit access to certain sites for directors and do so with no stint of remorse.

The best way is to confront the sons of bitches. Call them out. Do not hold back. Start up a racket in the office when your boss is around but make sure you state precisely what they are about, what they are up to. Don't sugar-coat it. Don't cower when they try to deviate from the subject matter. Stand firm. Don't let them escape that day. Choose a glorious day to do it & make it count.

You might get a 2-week fine but they'll never try sh!t with you again. Heck, some will even switch to your camp out of shock.

Tried & trusted method since 2010

or

The best office politics is to be humble and a "yes sir" man/woman.

This is the secret of my getting to where I am today despite the odds against me being a black (dual citizen Nigerian born American for that matter) young man among my ranks.

I advise people not to engage in office politics but to be loyal and humble to the core. Be a one minute man, be a fool, give up your rights and privileges when the need arises, and above all build an impeccable character for yourself and see your bosses wanna make friends with you.
Today, I have friends that ordinarily should be my heroes and celebrities because of those virtues I listed up there.

Politics is inevitable. Man is a social and political animal. See the world for what it is, and not what you wish it to be; a brutal fighting pit where only the toughest thrive. Don't be an unarmed prophet like Jesus after all even Saintly Christ had haters and ended up nailed to a cross and stabbed in the gut because he wanted to be a nice guy. Be a Malcom x. The unpredictable and unstable element nobody wants to mess with. Sometimes people push you intentionally to gauge your response, your strength. Do return the favour with more aggression, and they will learn to respect (fear) you and yours. Personally, 'I never met a Naira I never liked'. So, if you have to play dirty to earn your bread or more bread, then do. The world is not a Disney castle.

With your bosses, kiss and lick those asses like they were the best thing you ever tasted. It will be worth it at the end of the month when the paycheck comes in. Be the psycophant and fan their egos, be the chew toy when they need to sharpen their teeth and claws, atleast until you have acquired enough means to Branch out on your own. Then you can tell them how very miserable and sad their lives are, that they have you prick you with their little joysticks to feel good about themselves.

First thing first, reduce your familiarity level with some of your colleagues. If not they won't be taking your orders seriously. They will start gossiping that you have changed because of small position. But that's the way it should be. Separate work from play with your friends.

Secondly, your main task as a supervisor is to get the job done the way upper management wants it. Play politics but don't backbite or gossip anyone.

Thirdly, if your work environment is too toxic for your liking, throw in the towel. There's nothing like Peace of mind.

There is that guy in the office who relates equally with everyone, doesn't belong to any political camp, doesn't contribute to gossip. makes everyone feel important and maintains a remarkable level of integrity.
He is the trustworthy one, he is reliable, he is well respected and he is the problem solver.
Be that guy.

This thread was created on August 9 when she was promoted to a Supervisor and it made FP today November 20 because more important issues like BBNAIJA filled this website.
I am sure by now she has been promoted to the Managing Director and the advice may not be too relevant anymore.
Seun needs to appoint new MODERATORS for his site and remove those ones who would useless topics to FP such as Ike likes Tacha post on Instagram

You also have to play it. Since you have identified your personal shortcomings, manage them. Talk less and act more. Take Jagaban as an example.

Be nice to everyone but be ruthless when you must. Don't pick a fight you cannot win; and if you must fight, pick a big fight that is worth it and would earn you respect. When they gossip about you, don't confront them. Let them fear your silence more than your words. If they slap your right cheek, respond with a swinging punch. Always play a fool but keep them guessing if you are really one. Finally, never, ever compromise on your fundamental principles for any reason. Be known to stand for something.

Remember the words of Lord Acton: "let them hate, so long as they fear". If they cannot respect you, they must invariably fear you.
