As for UK you need to think about it well. If it is a top school and in STEM I might take the risk and find a work around before the end of my masters. But it is a very tricky situation so the decision is up to you.

Nice response.. The good thing is that the school is a pilot institution which means an international student is allowed to stay for 6 months after grad. Either to get a work( in that case he starts to live there) r continue studies.

you can proceed on an education leave after you've been confirmed. it's no fast rule, similarly, as far as i know, you'll only be entitled to an official leave, after your confirmation.

You wouldn't feel the urge ro proceed on official leave, it's a Govt. work, less stress et al.

A fully funded PhD in any ivy league institution beats whatever NNPC offers.. IMHO, even a fully funded masters beats whatever NNPC offers...

Keyword is IMHO

Thanks a lot! But do you think NNPC will grant one 5 yrs study leave even after confirmation?

Whoever tells you to turn down a fully funded PhD offer from say Stanford University in lieu of NNPC GT offer needs to explain his reason. There's actually no reason I can think of. I suspect the person thinks the only opportunity that would be available to you after the PhD is a lecturing position but on the contrary several companies are after well grounded graduates of these schools. Think of the research internships in various companies you'll be exposed to while undergoing this degree.

There are great jobs that await you after this degree that would pay you as much as $150k(approx 54m) per annum as a start so even after you factor in cost of living and tax, NNPC's offer is still a long way from there, you can't get this salary even after 5 years in NNPC as long as you don't rest on your oars while studying.

Then there's also the added perk of venture capitalist willing to partner with you in any startup idea you think of. Just because you have these schools in your profile. We are talking of millions of dollars in investment funds here.

I really appreciate your humble suggestions. I must say, you've given me a huge turn around mindset to think deeper....Gracias!

To add to that I know a guy that went for a fully funded PhD in Louisiana state university(LSU)in Electrical Eng and got a job immediately after as an Engineer in Intel USA. If you are conversant with the rankings you'll know that LSU is not in top 100 USA universities let alone in the world at least the last time I checked.

I would choose fully funded PhD in a top 5 US school over NNPC.

It opens better opportunities. PhD in a top school is highly coveted in the international job market. My friend that did his PhD, also fully funded, in a Top 20 US school got Shell US job almost immediately after finishing.

Thank you sir...I really appreciate your immense contribution.

Well to each his own woh, as for me , I feel much more comfortable in Nigeria, dis country has alot of potential that majority of d youths failed to notice as they are blinded by oyibo land. Yes I can take a leave to study for MSc abroad AFTER working in NNPC for a bit( if I get the job). But I will jejely come back after am done.

I have no attachment to any country apart from Nigeria, I prefer to live here than any oyibo land.

I can't use NNPC or naija tax payers money to study abroad & only to ditch them because one IOCs from nowhere come with a higher job offer. My priority in this life ain't really MONEY. so far, am not wrong, as things always fall into place at the right time for me grin

You people are beginning to intimidate us with this talk of PhD in foreign land...o. make Una allow us manage our NNPC APL when it comes abeg grin grin I can't believe it is the almighty NNPC that people are feeling ambivalent about whether or not to accept their APL. Local man is just here dumbfounded lol.

Anyway, this NNPC recruitment through this thread has really opened my eyes to many things. I never knew remuneration at NNPC was not that superb as I used to see it from afar. This thread has been very informative. My advise is that young people should take any opportunity to leave this country. But you have to be very strategic in your moves.

Good day guys,

Please I need knowledgeable people to shed more light on this issue.

I would like to know the criteria been used to admit a bachelor's degree graduate, into a master degree in an entirely different course. Can a master degree holder pursue a PhD in a different course as well? Is it that easy to change career? Can a bachelor of engineering degree holder pursue post graduate degree in any engineering field?

I'm asking this because I have seen some people with several post graduate degrees in different courses without having a first degree in those courses.

Thank you for that.... To clarify further, let me give you guys an outline of how the TF was processed. To prevent approval bureaucracy, NNPC bundled TF budget with recruitment contracts like plastic chairs contract, refreshment for NNPC personnel and other contracts to secure a one time approval. On the other hand, these contractors would be tasked with TF payment to applicants, reason why people got alerts from different sources (i.e different contractors).
For those yet to receive alert, the contractor mandated to pay you is either yet to get paid by NNPC for the contract or has a challenge processing his invoice to get paid or other related processing challenges the led to the delay. All applicants would be paid their TF. Stop the conspiracy theory... don't deny yourself your TF and APL all together.

Thanks for deciding to give us a seemingly detailed narration. (This would endow you with loads of attention...)

Are you insinuating that those confirmed disbursing funds are contractors? (Terhemba King-anyam, Farouk Achimugu... )

If it's on contract basis, at least one date would have had all applicants paid sir. (Non till now after payment from three different ppl)

Na concoction and zobo, baba mu eru le.

There's a string attached with the mode of payment, there's a vetting before disbursement, it's glaring. Open your eyes.

Thank God Oga Jarus has confirmed it. PhD or even MS in a top US school opens doors for people. Similarly a guy that studied Chem Eng in my school went for masters in a not highly ranked US school, funded by his pops though and now works as a Data Scientist in Shell USA. Another one now works in Google as a Network Engineer(in fact he struggled to make 2-1).

That it worked for Mr A does not mean Mr B will experience same. Someone gave you a very good (best) advice that nothing is certain. If he is an EH , I will advice him to go for PHD but a capital NO for GT( without experience unless he doesn't have NNPC or other very good offer). Presently , companies are after what you can offer(bring to the table) not book. Please let's focus on NNPC matter.

Very possible but depends on the school. Having a Bachelor's degree in Nigeria in say Chem Eng and seeking for an MS in Elect Eng in say Stanford is extremely difficult though.

I've seen a case where some guy in India had a near perfect GRE score, near perfect GPA and publications in Chem Eng field got denied admission even though he had some few Elect Eng work experience after his Bachelor's because they consider alignment in your past experiences cos there are many candidates with similarly superb profiles.

For lower ranked school though it is easier and there are numerous cases where it has happened. But you can always give it a try just don't put all your eggs in one basket.

When you start, there's a leta called Assumption of Duty, After exactly 2yrs,there's something called Confirmation of Appt, it's an interview you go through, hit or miss, you'll still be given a Confirmation of Appt. leta, 1yr more i.e exactly after 3yrs you assume duty, you'll be due for promo, every three-three yrs, you'll be due for promotion, untill you reach level 15 (I don't know its eq. in NNPC), where you'll be due for promo every four-four yrs instead.
I hope this helps...

GTs start from level 8/9? I heard level 8 has been scrapped off for graduates is it true?

This is a similar case to mine actually, I studied aerospace engineering but I’m venturing into the petroleum sector. As long as you can find common grounds, which all engineering principles have in common and you can gain tangible work experience in the field you intend to delve into, you will be surely considered. I encountered this question at the PTDF interview by the way. Just find a way to relate the two courses and you must find a reason why you wanna switch aside from financial gains of course!

I think you should check German schools. A lot of them offer courses like that where you can take a master's degree in an entirely different field. However, it has to be somewhat related. You can't go from management sciences for example, to engineering.

Further more, as for PhD, it all depends on your research proposal. If you can package a good proposal, you would most likely get admission offer from some schools.

See the companies you're mentioning. Please, don't forget to advise people on the course of study. If you go and do a PhD even in Harvard in an occupation that is not so much in demand, you may not find the PhD venture as rewarding as conceived. If check most of the success stories being shared, they are in ICT related fields. For example, I doubt if anyone would rush you if you go do a PhD in civil engineering at Harvard. Some of these fields of specialisations have gone full circle. In other words, they have been fully developed and the knowledge is now everywhere. ICT is a relatively evolving field of specialization and it is gaining application in virtually all sectors of human endeavour. This is while jobs are easy for these guys. Let's be mindful of the choices we make sha. Let's not use the success stories of one or two persons around to make conclusion and advise people. Intact, I think there was a survey in the US that established that a large number of PhD students tend to think that stress and financial commitment is not worth it. You can Google and check it out.

I definitely know what a top 5 school means and by the way, ivy league is a different term. MIT and caltech are not ivy league and they are above many other ivys in rankings.

Like I said, I'm refraining from writing too much, I see a lot of comments here and a lot are too centered on few idiosyncrasies.

I have several close friends and close professors from all these schools and have gained several insights into the navigation of life matters regarding gradschool, job, networks, and country specifics.

Trust me, it depends on each person, interests and circumstances. I am thinking of a way to explain it better and address misconceptions.

Also regarding that 3m dollars.. I really hope you got your facts right. For context, Google"s CEOearns 1m dollars plus, Tesla's CFO earns about 6m and that's total compensation.. So I'm really baffled where you got that figure for a grad candidate.. I could learn though.
