The Amazon rainforest, also referred to as the ‘Lungs of the Planet' because it produces more than 20% of the Planet's oxygen.

Amazon has been burning for weeks now.

Eerie pictures of Sao Paulo being blanketed in thick smoke from Amazon wildfires are going viral, with many concerned that a surge in deforestation is wreaking environmental disaster.

Sao Paulo which is Brazil's largest city was plunged into darkness around midday on Monday, with monitoring data from the World Meteorological Organization showing a large smoke plume spreading south-east to the Atlantic.

Pictures taken around 3:00pm - 4:30pm show that cars were forced to turn on their headlights in order to deal with low-visibility.

People Share Apocalyptic Photos Of Sao Paulo Which Went Pitch Black During Daytime From Amazon Fires.

Amazon fires can be seen from space as wild blazes which are destroying swathes of the rainforest have turned day into night in Sao Paulo.

Satellite photos show smoke drifting thousands of miles over Brazil and its border with Bolivia, Chile and Peru.

This NASA satellite photo shows several fires burning in the states of Rondonia, Amazonas, Para and Mato Grosso earlier this month.

Wildfires raging in the Amazon rainforest have hit a record number of 72,843 fires detected so far by Brazil's space research center.

What you really need to know about Amazon Rainforest.

*.Amazon Rainforest produces 22% of earth's oxygen.

* If the Amazon rainforest was a country, it would rank 9th in size.

* The nine nations that have the Amazon rainforest in their borders are: Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana.

* The Amazon rainforest accounts for more than half of the entire world's remaining rainforests.

* The Amazon rainforest is home to 10% of the known species in the world.

* The Amazon rainforest is home to more than 1500 of the bird species in the world.

* There are over 40,000 different plant species and approximately 2.5 million insect species in the Amazon rainforest.

* There are approximately 10 million species of animals, plants and insects known to man and more than half of them call the rainforest home.

* There are approximately 3000 fruits that grow in the rainforest that are edible.

* Many plants around the world have medicinal qualities. Of the plants known to have anti-cancer properties, 70% are found in the rainforest. Amazon natives use rainforest plants regularly but 90% of the ones they use have not been studied by modern science.

* It is believed that there may still be as many as 50 Amazon native tribes living in the rainforest that have never been in contact with the rest of the world.

* There are many dangerous species of snakes, spiders and animals in the Amazon rainforest. It is also home to the Anaconda.

* If you were caught in the rain in the Amazon you would have about 10 minutes to find your umbrella.

The trees are so tightly packed that it can take 1 minute for the rain to reach the ground below.

* The length of the Amazon River is approximately 6400 kilometres (4000 miles).

* There are over 3000 known species of fish that live in the Amazon River, with more constantly being discovered.

* Anacondas lurk in the shallow waters of the Amazon Basin, they are one of the largest snakes in the world and occasionally attack larger animals such as goats that get to close the water.

* The Amazon River is also home to the piranha, a meat eating type of fish! Being carnivores, piranhas are known to attack in groups, preying on livestock that strays into the water.

* Over 20% of earth's fresh water flows in Amazon.

* It pumps millions of barrels of fresh water in seconds into the Atlantic ocean to reduce salinity.

If the billionaires that pledged funds for the restoration of Notre-dames roof, would only donate half of what they pledged to fight this inferno, there would be hope.

As an aside, the wildfire s have been blazing for THREE WEEKS!

I'M beginning to think humanity may be facing mass extinction , sooner than we imagine.

Oxygen is about to be really expensive.

Mark my words.

Brazilian Amazon's daylight which have turned into midnight is just but for the moment....

This is far better than My country that has been living in daylight all year long but nothing has worked.....bad gorvenance, Untold hardship upon her citizens, Banditry, Ruga, Herdsmen, Kidnapping, Bombing, Moles , Informants and Saboteurs in our Military outfit etc etc....

All these happened in our broad daylight.

Lol.... We're talking about Forest crossing almost 9 countries.

Amazon is 5,500,000 km2 (2,100,000 sq mi) bigger than Indian in size and about 4 times bigger than Nigeria which is 923,768 km2 (356,669 sq mi),.

Sambisa is just 2,258 km2 (872 sq mi), not up to whole Lagos State in size.

There are bigger Forests in Congo, Russia, United States, Australia, Canada, Finland, e.tc.

Sambisa is not thick, not on the list of 50 world's largest Forests.

The Brazilian president already has plans to deforest the Amazon, and give it out to oil explores and developers, this issue caused an outcry in his country, just last month I'll not be surprised if it's burning this month Three weeks and no media coverage

Is about vegetation, they made us believe that some percentage
of earth's oxygen comes from plants/trees.

If is true, then Amazon is housing the largest population of earth's trees and plants.

If 20% can come from Amazon, 30% from other world's Forest/Vegetations/trees/plants scattered in every country of the world.

Remaining 50% comes from other sources.

The statistics maybe wrong a bit but not lie.

He can't do that, he can only give out little. Just like give out a street in the whole Nigeria.

That place is massive, with many areas unexplored hiding resources.

Explores and Developers want to tap.

Part of the problem here is that human factor could be at play here. That's asides the natural causes.

I was watching the News the other day and I saw the roles being played by those ranchers[who want more grazing land for their cattle] and illegal miners[prospecting for gold] in destroying the Amazon. Some top corporations and business leaders want that forest opened up for further economic exploitation.

But hey, we are looking at the Amazon here while a similar form of deforestation is also hitting the Congo rainforest- this time, through rapid tree-felling and illegal lumbering. And that's smack-bang in our backyard. Africa.

The one in the Indonesian archipelago is already giving way to oil-palm plantations. We are gonna pay the price for our greed sooner than later.
