Labour Vows To Resist Retrenchment At NIPOST by prof2007: 6:57am On Aug 25, 2019
Workers, under the aegis of Senior Staff Association of Statutory Corporations and Government Owned Companies, have vowed to resist retrenchment of workers at the Nigerian Postal Service during the execution of a planned reform at the agency. The Federal Government intends to overhaul NIPOST in a bid to reposition the country’s postal and courier system for better performance.

Former Communications Minister, Adebayo Shittu, had disclosed of the plan to unbundle the agency into six different establishments, which would comprise a microfinance bank, a property and developing company, a transport and logistics company, an e-commerce company, an e-government services company as well as a digital services firm.

But feelers at NIPOST headquarters in Abuja indicated on Friday that there were fears among workers of the agency that the reform could lead to job losses. The labour union, however, said it was ready for a showdown with the government should it retrench workers of the agency in the name of reform.

The General Secretary of the SSASCGOC, Mr Ayo Olorunfemi, in an interview with our correspondent, said the government had at previous meetings with the labour said the reform would not involve job losses. But he admitted that the labour union could not trust the government to keep to its promise.

Olorunfemi said, “When they came up with the idea of unbundling or restructuring or whatever they called it, they said more jobs will be generated though the initiative. If government changes this approach of employing more people and decides to sack, we will also engage them by changing our strategy. When we discover that their sincerity is in doubt, we will change our strategy accordingly.”

He however stressed that the union was not opposed to reforms, as long as they would achieve the expected results. Olorunfemi added that NIPOST workers were prepared to learn new skills in order to properly fit into the expected new arrangement.

“If there will be requirements for new skills, which we know will certainly occur, we will also position our members to re-skill. Whatever technology you are bringing, it is just for them to learn that technology in order to measure up. We don’t have any problem with any form of reforms they want to implement at NIPOST as long as it is in line with our understanding that the reforms will increase the staff strength, rather than lead to job losses,” the SSASCGOC scribe added.

Describing NIPOST as a ‘sleeping giant’, Olorunfemi insisted that the proposed reform should rejuvenate the organisation.

I don't think any government be it federal or state could ever think of laying off any worker bearing in mind the level of poverty in Nigeria now.
Such act will be wickedness of the highest order.

The honest truth is that most NIPOST employees, especially the ones here in J......(let me not mention the town so I won't further complicate the woes of the NIPOST workers in that town) are very lazy and corrupt...All they are on the lookout for are international incoming parcels which they can steal, seize, or impose unwarranted charges on angry

There are still good ones though....the ones in charge of receiving parcels for delivery to other parts of Nigeria are quite efficient and courteous smiley

redundant? How?
If government feel that some workers there are redundant that means there is little or no work to be done there.
Simple post them to where you feel they will be utilized optimally.
Don't tell me if your brother, who is a family ma is among those that are to be lay off you will clap for the government to go when your brother is willing to work but he is under utilized.
By the way this has nothing to do with private business.

They are probably the "most efficient" public utility service right now, though they have lots of inconsistencies and corruption too, but they do their work

Note: The "most efficient" is relative to other public utility agencies. This doesn't take away the fact that it is a sleeping giant.

Being lazy is different from being unproductive.
I believe nobody is unproductive giving the right tool to work.

NIPOST is long overdue for restructuring and sadly, some workers will be laid off. They have too many unproductive workers in that agency and most are in the rural areas. There are post offices that hardly generates a gross revenue of 10k in a month. Most of them have about five staff. Apart from the personnel cost, government also spend huge amount to run the post offices (overhead) and maintain the buildings.

Going forward, NIPOST should sell all those unproductive post offices or convert them to other uses. There is no sense in maintaining them at a huge annual loss to government.

The fig tree that Jesus cursed in the Bible was unproductive sad

By your analogy, Jesus did wrong by cursing the tree, since it was not lazy....Jesus should have uprooted it and replanted it where it will bear fruit grin

I was going to say this too.
NIPOST is the only Nigerian thing I know that's working. I've been using it since 2015 and never been disappointed.
Note: shipping within Nigeria only though.

What is ''if you are lazy change''? Have i told you i am lazy? Or i am working in Nipost?
I don't attack people here, i post in a civil way.

So because it's Government money, it should keep being wasted?

Independent of corruption, looting and massive wastage of funds which have Characterized Nigerian Govenrments, would you say the same thing if the government in question is the US, or UK Government

Accountability and Financial prudence has to start from somewhere Sir.
