What is this thing about clothing for ceremonies. I don't buy aso ebi, in fact I hate it. I will wear whatever dress I have to attend your function.

But there come instances when you just have to buy. My brother in-law got married late last year and I had to join them in buying their aso ebi only to discover that the dress they sold for 7.5k is just 3k in the market and the dress faded on first wash. I told my wife that she forced me to buy it. That one is gone.

Now, they are planning a funeral programme again and my wife is telling me I must buy their clothing material again. The dress, mine and hers will cost 29k, I got small sample of the material (for male and female), gave it to my textile dealer friend and she told me four trouser length of the male material will cost 6k, while the one for women (wrapper and head tie inclusive) will cost 13k making a total of 19k. I told my wife I'm not buying but she has been on my neck since two days now.

How can someone be extorting me just because they wanted to do funeral? What kind of family thing is this? I'll cough out 29k in this Baba's economy and still give financial assistance to the woman whose father died o.

Why are our people like this?

Still standing my ground while my wife is still insisting I must pay even till now. The funeral comes up first weekend in October.

Haha... Op I genuinely feel your pains.

The most annoying thing is that this culture which is synonymous with the southwest has taken a widespread all over Nigeria.

You'll buy material of 3k in the market and sell it to people for 15k... That's daylight ROBBERY!!!

I can't kill myself trying to make people happy, I'm not even sure they will serve me big meat at the wedding, I rather use that asoebi money to stock my fridge at home!

Are you stopping her from buying the materials? She can buy all she wants while you wear what you have or she can as well buy for you

We are the same sort of just that I am a little extreme than you are because I won't even bother coming in the first place.
If you invite me for any wedding, gathering, funeral etc that I have no interest in,I won't come.
Then I also don't buy aso ebi but could support with cash if you are of value to me.

Hoooo. Why should I stop her from buying hers? She is insisting I must pay the 29K. I have told her I'm not paying a dime, she can go ahead to buy hers. I'm not even going to send anything to the celebrant because I've made up my mind not to attend. The celebrant is the same person who packaged the inferior clothing material that washed away late last year, I must do this so that they won't make attempt to extend such to me in the future. This is obvious fraud and my wife's stubbornness on the issue annoys me a lot.

This is what I learnt from my friend who got married.

Shey you said you saw the material at a cheaper rate somewhere else, buy that cheap one and sew it if you want to, it’s the same material for God’s sake and if she wants to buy from her brethren, by all means, she should go ahead . At this point, it is very inconsiderate of your wife to want you to spend money frivolously in order to please some people who wouldn’t come to your aid in time of need.

If she doesn’t hear this, even me as a lady, I will not go for the burial finally oh. Before, no be bible talk say “let the dead bury the dead?” undecided

Do what is good and will save your marriage .

Students lie about school fees and project cost wink
Employees pocket part of sales money they made
Lecturers sell outdated handouts to exhort students.
Student leaders exhort other students
Wives exhort husbands by inflating soup money grin

I've only bought aso-ebi twice in my entire life.

And I'm a babe. I've not even finished committing to attend your wedding, let alone buying and sewing asoebi... lol. I'm just not cut out for all that perturbance.

I think your wife is just being interested in what people will say if she doesn't buy. But for someone like me I don't care. That was how one of my relatives brought Asoebi for me to buy for her wedding. How much she said 25k and I told her bluntly that I can't afford it cuz I just finished my own wedding then and my own Asoebi was 2k. In fact I never wanted it at all but my mum was saying how it will look beautiful. Even my hubby was willing to pay but for me I refused cuz I felt it was a total waste of fund so no need. Till today she doesn't talk to me and me no send.

Nobody kuku can force me to buy asoebi. The last time I bought aso ebi was for an annual church program two years ago and it was sold for almost triple the actual amount. The following year I locked up and refused to buy the aso ebi. I and my mum were the only people in church who didn't buy and we stuck out like white people among negroes. Wetin consine me? I chop the rice well and danced like dancing was going out of style. I REFUSE to be extorted.

Op let your madam buy the aso ebi with her money. Like someone said here, to spend someone else's money dey sweet.

You even gave her a chance to buy with her money.
I will not buy, she too is not allowed to buy or she takes over the family's expenses.

I had to switch church for child's dedication because my parish insisted on me wearing a particular uniform for the occasion.

My own ceremony, you dictate what I wear.
Future impossible tense.

OP, u are deviating from the most important thing which is to go and pay your last respect to the dead.. U can't say u can't go because of clothes.. On that day, put on anything that makes u comfortable..

If it will make your wife unhappy as a couple at home.. just be matured about it and let her buy for herself only (ie if u guys are using joint account.. ) but if u people are operating a separate account then tell her to buy it herself that you don't mind..... I don't think she would have insisted if it were to be your own family... I'm guessing that she wants to save face..

But please don't boycott a funeral because of clothes.. it sounds childish...

Stand on your ground, if she has the money let her buy for both of you or buy her own

At times we take a stand and decision and stand on it

They can only grumble for that period and after that they will exempt you

But make sure you won't have any cause to sell ashoebi to them

That's how they make people go broke all in the name to save head
