Àkàrà is a special delicacy in Nigeria we all love to eat. Some eat it with bread, pap/custard, Eko/agidi, rice e.t.c Though it is popularly called Àkàrà, some refers to it as fried bean cake and so on. But here's the real English name. @ Wiseandtrue, you are very funny . Acaraje is the Brazilian name for Akara. The English name for Akara is Bean Cake or Fried Bean Cake. Slaves from Yorubaland, Dahomey and West Africa took Akara to Brazil. Brazilians today call Akara 'Acaraje'. Cheers. 18 Likes 2 Shares |

There is no English name for Akara. Akara is Akara. Is there an English name for Sushi? Or kebab? Any English speaking person that can not say Akara should not eat it. 18 Likes 6 Shares |

Wiseandtrue:You're wrong @Wiseandtrue. You have to do some corrections in your original post. Akara is a Yoruba word just like moin moin which when elongated is "moyin moyin" or "mo eyin" (it means: to stick to the teeth). NOTE: Mo means to stick to something, while Eyin is the Yoruba word for teeth. Now in the 1700s and majorly in the 1800s, more than 500,000 Yorubas from the Yoruba-speaking parts of Nigeria, Benin Republic, and Togo were taken as captives to Cuba, Jamaica, Trinidad, Guyana (where Rihana's mum comes from) Brazil, etc. The Yorubas from Ijesaland, Oyo, Egbaland, Ketu kingdom, etc, took Yoruba foods such as Akara to Bahia Region in Brazil which has a very strong Yoruba cultural, religious, and linguistic presence from the plantation slavery era till today! Herbert Macaulay's maternal grandfather (Bishop Samuel Ajayi- Crowther) was also rescued with other captives from a Portuguese slave ship that was headed for Brazil from Lagos island in 1821 by a British Navy ship and taken to Freetown. So Acaraje is the Yoruba-Brazilian spelling for Akara which is the Yoruba-Nigerian spelling. Akara Ijesa (Acaraje) is a very popular delicacy in Brazil, Cuba (where Yoruba culture is also very strong and the Yorubanised-Cuban language is officially recognised in the land of Fidel Castro). The Hausas however call Akara... "Kosai." Interestingly Yorubas call the oven-baked cakes "Akara Oyinbo" or the "white person's Akara." Hope this helps everyone reading this. All the best. |
